Book excerpt: Climate change, urban sprawl, abandonment of agriculture, intensification of forestry and agriculture, changes in energy generation and use, expansion of infrastructure networks, habitat destruction and degradation, and other drivers of change occur at increasing rates. They affect patterns and processes in forest landscapes, and modify ecosystem services derived from those ecosystems. Consequently, rapidly changing landscapes present many new challenges to scientists and managers. While it is not uncommon to encounter the terms “global change” and “landscape” together in the ecological literature, a global analyses of drivers of change in forest landscapes, and their ecological consequences have not been addressed adequately. That is the goal of this volume: an exploration of the state of knowledge of global changes in forested landscapes with emphasis on causes and effects, and challenges faced by researchers and land managers. Initial chapters identify and describe major agents of landscape change: climate, fire, and human activities. The next series of chapters address implications of changes on ecosystem services, biodiversity conservation and carbon flux. A chapter that describes methodologies of detecting and monitoring landscape changes is presented followed by chapter that highlights the many challenges forest landscape managers face amidst of global change. Finally, we present a summary and a synthesis of the main points presented in the book. Each chapter will contain the individual research experiences of chapter authors, augmented by review and synthesis of global scientific literature on relevant topics, as well as critical input from multiple peer reviewers.

It focuses predominantly on insect pests, but many examples relate to fungal pathogens, some of which are vectored by forest insects. The central theme of the book is the development of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), the main impetus for which comes from the need to use environmentally sensitive methods of control appropriate to both semi-natural and plantation forests. Such forests are likely to be managed not only for timber production but also for recreation and to enhance biodiversity. An introductory chapter describes how forests have been transformed by exploitation and management and how altering the composition and distribution of forests can contribute to pest problems. Subsequent chapters focus on the 'techniques' of management and control that contribute to IPM, considering in turn plant health, risk-rating, silviculture, tree resistance, biological control, microbial control and semiochemicals. D. 1700 The objectives of this study were to reconstruct and analyze a multicentury history of budworm and tussock moth outbreaks in old-growth mixed-conifer stands of the north ern Blue Mountains and Eagle Cap edemess in northeastern Oregon. We were par ticularly interested in assessing possible changes in outbreak dynamics in the 2oth century relative to previous centuries. Our starting point for this study was observa tions of radial growth responses to defoliation by these two insects in previous tree ring studies conducted within the region (brubaker 1978; Brubaker and Greene 1979; Vcman 1980, From this work it was evident that characteristic tree-ring pat terns (hereafter called signatures) caused by budworms and tussock moths might be detected and isolated in radial increment time series. Following this lead, we applied dendrochronological methods developed and demonstrated in the southern Rocky Mountains (swetnam and others 1985; Swetnam and Lynch 1989, 1993) to tree-ring collections from the Blue Mountains. In this paper, we describe the results of our investigations in the northern Blue Mountains; we focused primarily on the historical patterns of change in regional-scale outbreaks among all sampled stands.
