Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical and Political Geography of the Province of Assam The Dihong, which emerges from the Himalayas through the hills inhabited by the Abors, has been proved by Mr. Needham to be the same stream as the Sanpo, the eastward course of which, along the north of the great Himalayan barrier, has been traced by explorers to a point where it turns southwards into the range. The Brahmaputra itself, so far as is known, has but a short course beyond the limits of British territory, and above Sadiya is far inferior in volume to the Dihong. Book Studies in the Geography of Ancient and Medieval India

Download or read book Studies in the Geography of Ancient and Medieval India written by Dineschandra Sircar and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1971 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeing the radiant face of Ma Anandamayi and hearing her laughter you guess that she is an incarnation of Joy. Touched by the caress of Her glance you know that her heart is overflowing with love for all beings. Listening to Her teaching so simple and clear you understand that She is in possession of all Wisdom. But one cannot say whether it is Joy, Love or Wisdom that is the source of all this for with Her all therr are inextricably and indissolubly mingled one coluld not exist without the others. The joy which Ma anandmayi lives is not that which we know in worldly life, where pleasure and pain, hope, regret and disillusionment, attraction and repulsion follow on each other's heels, born one of another. Nor is it an egocentric calm of stoic rigidity that erects around itself an rampart of indifference. Hers is an overflowing, irrepressible joy that expresses itself in gaiety, that knows no obstacles, because it is deeply rooted in the Absolute, beyond the dualities of good and evil, of 'I' and 'not-I', of pleasant and unpleasant, because its unshakable base is Love and Wisdom.

Book The Archaeology of Early Medieval and Medieval South Asia

Download or read book The Archaeology of Early Medieval and Medieval South Asia written by Swadhin Sen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the ways in which archaeological methods have been used in debates concerning the early medieval and medieval periods in South Asia. Despite the incorporation and use of archaeological data to corroborate historical narratives, the theories and methods of archaeology are largely ignored in and excluded from the dominating, institutionalized, and hegemonic disciplinary discourses. The volume offers contesting insights, polemical narratives, and new data from archaeological contexts to initiate a debate on many foundational premises of archaeological and historical narratives. It focuses on the much-neglected region of the Eastern Ganga-Brahmaputra Basin as a spatial frame to do this and studies themes such as spatial and temporal scales of concepts and methods, multi-scaler factors and processes of continuity and changes, the settlement archaeology of the alluvial landscape, changing patterns of agrarian transformation, and material cultures, including coins, inscriptions, pottery, and sculptures, in their contexts in sub-regional, regional, and supra-regional intersections. Dedicated to historian Brajadulal Chattopadhyaya, this volume presents a crucial and unprecedented intervention in the study of the early medieval and the medieval periods. It will be useful for scholars and researchers of archaeology, ancient history, medieval history, water history, earth sciences, palaeoecology, historical ecology, epigraphy, art history, material culture studies, Indian history, and South Asian studies in general.

Book A Cultural History of Assam of the Early Period 400 A D 1200 A D

Download or read book A Cultural History of Assam of the Early Period 400 A D 1200 A D written by B. K. Barua and published by . This book was released on 1947 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Thesis submitted forms a part of a comprehensive work on the Cultural History of Assam, comprising the various aspects of the life of the people. The materials were collected in India as well as during the course of my study in England. The present volume contains an account of Assam from circe 400 A.D. to 1200 A.D., i.e., to the advent of the Ahoms. Assam, known as Kamarupa, figured during this period as a well-lnown Hindu kingdom. But so far no book has been written delineating the multifarious acivities of the country. The present work strives to depict the life of the people of the period with special reference to their economic and social conditions, their religion and religious institutions, and finally, their achievements in the fields of art, literature and architecture. Since the cultural life of a country cannot properly be evaluated without a thorough understanding of the political history, a chapter on political history has also been included. In the treatment of this chapter, an endeavour has been made to bring new facts to notice and to study the known facts from a fresh view point. The work is divided into seven chapters. It opens with a general introduction, and deals with the physical back-ground, including geographical divisions, population and terminology. It includes a sub-section on Early Geography: The Literary Tradition, in which all available references from early texts are collected and discussed. In the light of this information, a map of ancient Assam is reconstructed for the first time. The second chapter is on Political History. The third chapter, on Administration, deals with the theory of kingship and systems of central and local administration. A sub-section is added on Military Organisation. The fourth chapter is on Economic Conditions, in which the nature of village and town, the various aspects of the land-system and tenure, agriculture, crafts and industries, and trade and trade-routes to Magadha, Burma and China are discussed. Chapter Five on Society deals with the various classes of people, their occupations and their different social institutions. It is completed with a survey of the Learning and Literature of the period. The next chapter traces the history and the spread of different religious creeds, such as Saivism, Saktism, Vaisnavism and Buddhism, along with their respective rites and rituals. The closing chapter is devoted to Fine Art, which is divided into three sections, namely, (i) Architecture, (ii) Sculpture and (iii) Iconography. Almost all the available materials relating to the archaeology of Assam of the period are systematised here for the first time. An attempt has also been made to throw light on the principles on which Assamese art is based, as well as upon the sources from which its aims and ideals are derived. Finally it ends with an assessment of Assamese art. The chief sources of information of the author are the contemporary inscriptions, literary works, and accounts of foreign travellers. In respect to the first, the writer may say that he has thoroughly studied the inscriptions relating to Assam history, and has been able to extract even minute bits of information useful for his work. The literary source mainly centres round the Epics, Puranas, the works of Kautilya, Kalidasa, Bana and others. One of the foreign travellers who visited Assam during the period was Hiuen Tsiang. His invaluable account is very critically examined. In addition to these specific sources, the relevant modern publications, books written by eminent authorities, and their contributions in learned journals, have also been read and fully utilised. All sources quoted in the work are indicated in the foot-notes. The Thesis concludes with three appendices and a bibliography.

Book Religion in Early Assam

Download or read book Religion in Early Assam written by Rena Laisram and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a fresh approach to the existing literature on religion in Early Assam, bringing together perspectives from the fields of archaeology, religion, history and heritage. For decades, the Naraka legend has been incorporated into history without due critical attention and analysis of the historical context, while archaeological studies in religion have been largely descriptive. The sacred landscape of the erstwhile Prāgjyotiṣa and Kāmarūpa kingdoms had linkages with the history of other parts of India, and beyond. This book offers a comprehensive reconstruction of religion in Early Assam based on an exhaustive use of archaeological sources. It opens with a useful overview of the conceptual and methodological foundations of religion, archaeology and history. Heritage conservation of sacred sites such as Kāmākhyā which face the impact of rapid urbanization illustrates implications for Assam’s history and identity.
