Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Development of the New York State High School System Since this general survey was made, only one exhaustive and intensive study has appeared, dealing with a considerable number of schools. This is the monograph of Dr Alexander Inglis, The Rise of the High School in Massachusetts. Doctor Inglis limited his study largely to the period previous to 1860 and, aside from indicating the progress of legislation in the state, he established conclusively the number of schools founded in that period and the nature of the curriculum. This was made possible by a detailed research through the local town records and reports of school committees which in Massachusetts have been preserved with great care. Book The New York Public School Being a History of Free Education in the City of New York Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New York Public School Being a History of Free Education in the City of New York Classic Reprint written by A. Emerson Palmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Public School, Being a History of Free Education, in the City of New York The celebration of the centenary of the inauguration (on February 19, 1805) of the movement for free public schools in this city was suggested to the Board of Education in the spring of 1904, and, later, the preparation of a history of public education in New York. The Board unanimously approved both suggestions, and granted me a leave of absence for the purpose of writing this book. Although the time has been, of necessity, limited, no reasonable pains have been spared to secure accuracy. From the literary point of view this work makes no claim upon the reader. It is put forth as a fairly complete chronicle - a chronicle rather than a philosophic his tory of educational events in the city during the past one hundred years. To fill out the record, a preliminary chapter, relating to schools on Manhattan Island prior to 1805, precedes the his tory of the century now closing; and accounts of early schools in other parts of the city are also given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public School: History of Common School Education in New York From 1633 to 1904 In the development of popular education in the afiiyfk pnited States, New York is entitled to primacy in two'new York respects - the genesis of the common school system and supervision of the same by the state. That system has been defined and promoted by various commonwealths and aided by grants from the federal government, until there are throughout the union schools free to all, con se-rvinga patriotic citizenship and assuring an eu lightened nation, but it is from New York that the chief leadings, those of public provision for their maintenance and central authority for their conduct have proceeded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the State of New York: For the Use of Common Schools, Academies, Normal and High Schools, and Other Seminaries of Instruction So far as I am aware, the compilation now presented to the public is the first attempt at providing for our elementary and higher institutions of learning a separate History of the State of New York. Many of the most important events in that history are, it is true, contained in the current school histories of the United States necessarily, however, greatly abridged and condensed. It has seemed to me, and to others interested in the work of popular education, that some attempt should be made to supply this deficiency by presenting within a convenient compass the prominent outlines of those interesting details which have rendered our own Empire State so conspicuous in the history of the great American Republic. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Teaching of History in the Secondary Schools of New York and Massachusetts Thirty-eight and eight-tenths per cent. Of all the academy students in regular attendance in New York State in 1825 attended schools in which history was taught. In 1860 per cent. Attended such schools. Consequently, in 1825, 61 per cent. Of all secondary school pupils could not have taken history in school. By 1860 only 5 per cent. Could be so classed. A further analysis is possible. Treating the material in a similar way, the number of pupils may be determined, who attended schools where general history or United States History in any special branch was given. Such an analysis appears in Table VII, and gives an indication of the importance of the various types of history taught. Book History of the Public School Society of the City of New York

Download or read book History of the Public School Society of the City of New York written by William Oland Bourne and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 818 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Public School Society of the City of New York: With Portraits of the Presidents of the Society The History of the Public School Society of the City of New York, presented in this volume, has been prepared in compliance with the request of the Society, and the repeatedly expressed wishes of numerous friends of the cause of public education. At the last meeting of the Society previous to its dissolution, held on July 22, 1853, a resolution was adopted authorizing "the President and Agent to place at the disposal of a competent writer such documents in possession of the Society as illustrate its rise, progress, and history." This resolution was not acted on until the close of 1854, when a very numerously attended meeting was held, at which a committee of five was appointed to superintend the work, and under whose revision it should be finally submitted to the public. This committee consisted of George T. Trimble, the President, Joseph B. Collins, the Secretary, Samuel W. Seton, the Agent of the Society, Assistant Superintendent of Common Schools, Hiram Ketchum, and Charles E. Pierson, M.D. The committee elected a secretary for the performance of the work, whose fitness for the task was to be found more in the enthusiasm of his admiration for the Society, and his earnest sympathy with the cause of public instruction, than any other merit that he might possess. It is, perhaps, not impertinent to remark, that the author had for several years previously entertained the purpose of writing a History of the Society, while there were yet probabilities of its permanence as an educational establishment.
