Book A History of English Reflexive Pronouns

Download or read book A History of English Reflexive Pronouns written by Elly van Gelderen and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2000-10-20 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a number of seemingly distinct phenomena in the history of English: the introduction of special reflexive pronouns (e.g. myself), the loss of verbal agreement and pro-drop, and the disappearance of morphological Case. It provides vast numbers of examples from Old and Middle English texts showing a person split between first, second, and third person pronouns. Extending an analysis by Reinhart & Reuland, the author argues that the ‘strength’ of certain pronominal features (Case, person, number) differs cross-linguistically and that parametric variation accounts for the changes in English. The framework used is Minimalist, and Interpretable and Uninterpretable features are seen as the key to explaining the change from a synthetic to an analytic language.

Book A History of Old English Meter

Download or read book A History of Old English Meter written by R. D. Fulk and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2015-08-12 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A History of Old English Meter, R. D. Fulk offers a wide-ranging reference on Anglo-Saxon meter. Fulk examines the evidence for chronological and regional variation in the meter of Old English verse, studying such linguistic variables as the treatment of West Germanic parasite vowels, contracted vowels, and short syllables under secondary and tertiary stress, as well as a variety of supposed dialect features. Fulk's study of such variables points the way to a revised understanding of the role of syllable length in the construction of early Germanic meters and furnishes criteria for distinguishing dialectal from poetic features in the language of the major Old English poetic codices. On this basis, it is possible to draw conclusions about the probable dialect origins of much verse, to delineate the characteristics of at least four discrete periods in the development of Old English meter, and with some probability to assign to them many of the longer poems, such as Genesis A, Beowulf, and the works of Cynewulf. A History of Old English Meter will be of interest to scholars of Anglo-Saxon, historians of the English language, Germanic philologists, and historical linguists.

Book Morphology and Language History

Download or read book Morphology and Language History written by Claire Bowern and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to make a contribution to codifying the methods and practices linguists use to recover language history, focussing predominantly on historical morphology. The volume includes studies on a wide range of languages: not only Indo-European, but also Austronesian, Sinitic, Mon-Khmer, Basque, one Papuan language family, as well as a number of Australian families. Few collections are as cross-linguistic as this, reflecting the new challenges which have emerged from the study of languages outside those best known from historical linguistics. The contributors illustrate shared methodological and theoretical issues concerning genetic relatedness (that is, the use of morphological evidence for classification and subgrouping), reconstruction and processes of change with a diverse range of data. The volume is in honour of Harold Koch, who has long combined innovative research on understudied languages with methodological rigour and codification of practices within the discipline.

Book Historical Grammar of Apabhra a

Download or read book Historical Grammar of Apabhra a written by Ganesh Vasudeo Tagare and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1987 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apabhramsa forms the previous stage of modern Indo-Aryan languages like Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali etc., its study is essential not only for its literature but also for the formation of modern Indian languages. The present volume is a chrono-regional study of nearly all the edited Apabhramsa texts available. The Apabhramsa texts were classified according to the place of their composition and the linguistic data was arranged in a chronological sequence and thus the space-time context of each forms was determined. After illuminating the term Apabhramsa and fixing its period and classifying the texts in their space-time context, the author offers a general conspectus of the phonological and morphological features of Apabhramsa in the Introduction. Then follow sections on Phonology, Declension, Conjugation, Nominal Stem-formation according to diachronic method connecting the evolved linguistic features to its modern descendant wherever possible. The work ends with an Index Verborum which lists all the words occurring in the study with their Sanskrit and Prakrit etymologies as well as references to their cognates in the modern Indo-Aryan. As Dr. Siddheshwar Varma says, ''It is the history of Indo-Aryan between A.D. 500-1200.''

Book Quantifying Expressions in the History of German

Download or read book Quantifying Expressions in the History of German written by Dorian Roehrs and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-05-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study describes the 1200-year history of German quantifying expressions like nîoman anderro > niemand anderer ‘nobody else’, analyzing the morpho-syntactic developments within the generative framework. The quantifiers examined arose from various lexical sources/categories (nouns, adjectives, and pronouns) but all changed to adjectival quantifiers. These changes are interpreted as a novel type of upward reanalysis from head to specifier, which we associate with degrammaticalization driven by analogy. As for the quantified phrases, most appeared in the genitive in Old High German, indicating a bi-nominal structure. During the Early New High German period, most quantified nouns and adjectives changed to agreement with the quantifier. By Modern German, only quantified DPs and pronouns remain in the genitive. These changes involve downward reanalysis of the quantified elements, being integrated into the matrix nominal depending on the structural size of the quantified phrase. Overall, we conclude that diachronically quantifying expressions may have different syntactic analyses.
