Download or read book The Transformation of Economic Life under the Roman Empire written by Lukas de Blois and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did a Roman imperial economy exist under the Late Republic, the Roman Principate and the Later Roman Empire? And if so, what type of economy was it? Another equally important question is: did the Roman Empire, by specific actions, the creation of infrastructures, or its very existence, trigger a transformation of economic life in the regions which it dominated? Or was the Empire a marginal affair in the regions that belonged to it, and did economic developments take their own course, independently of the Empire? Questions like these, which are of great consequence to any student of Roman history, archaeology, and Roman law, are treated in this volume, which in its successive parts focuses on: 1. The character of the Roman economy. 2. Economic life in particular regions of the Roman Empire. 3. The economy of the Later Roman Empire.

Download or read book Emotion and the Arts written by Mette Hjort and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1997-09-04 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only work of its kind, this exciting collection assembles a number of analytically minded philosophers, psychologists, and literary theorists, all of whom seek to provide fine-grained accounts of critical problems having to do with emotion and art. How best to explain emotions produced by works of art? What goes on when we feel emotion for an abstract art such as music? How is it that we can intelligibly feel emotion for persons and situations that we know are fictional? What is involved in our empathic experience of negative emotion through the art of tragedy? A strongly interdisciplinary volume that captures the richness of current debates about the role of agency in human emotional response, this collection also considers the influence of culture on emotion and demonstrates that cognitivist and social- constructivist perspectives need not be antagonistic and may actually work together in a complementary way. Essays cluster under four rubrics--"The Paradox of Fiction", "Emotion and its Expression through Art", "The Rationality of Emotional Responses to Art", and "The Value of Emotion"--and together they address questions of emotion in film, painting, music, dance, literature, and theater. With new work by leading thinkers in the field of aesthetics, and drawing upon state of the art scholarship from areas such as cognitive science, literary studies, and contemporary ethics, Emotion and the Arts is essential reading for those who study aesthetics, literature, theories of emotion, and the mind.

Download or read book Lake Chilwa written by M. Kalk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leonard C. Beadle In contrast to the more sta bie oceans, inland waters are, on the geological time scale, short-lived and are subject to great fluctuations in chemical composition and physical features. Very few lakes and rivers have existed continuously for more than a million years, and the life of the majority is to be measured in thousands or less. Earth movements, erosion and long-term climatic changes in the past have caused many of them to appear and disappear. No wonder then that most freshwater organism are especially adapted to great changes and many even to temporary extinction of their environment. Recent studies of residual sediments from existing and extinct lakes in tropical Africa have told us much about their age and the past history of their faunas and floras, from which we may deduce something about the climate and the conditions in the water in the past. The forces that have formed and moulded the African Great Lakes have been catastrophic in their violence and effects. They are not yet finished, but the present rate of change is, in human terms, too slow for direct observation of the ecological effects. The large man-made lakes are providing very good opportunities for studying the chemi cal and biological consequences of the initial filling but, once filled, they are artificially protected against major fluctuations.

Download or read book The Cosmic Race La Raza Cosmica written by José Vasconcelos and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1997-08-13 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this influential 1925 essay, presented here in Spanish and English, José Vasconcelos predicted the coming of a new age, the Aesthetic Era, in which joy, love, fantasy, and creativity would prevail over the rationalism he saw as dominating the present age. In this new age, marriages would no longer be dictated by necessity or convenience, but by love and beauty; ethnic obstacles, already in the process of being broken down, especially in Latin America, would disappear altogether, giving birth to a fully mixed race, a "cosmic race," in which all the better qualities of each race would persist by the natural selection of love.
