Download or read book Culinary Aspects of Ancient Rome written by Almudena Villegas Becerril and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a thrilling account of a thoughtful gastronomic journey through the Roman Empire. It reviews the role that food and its associated constituents had in the evolution of Roman life, and highlights the cookery processes practised by both social elites and humble peasant and common households. The hypotheses and conclusions presented here shed light onto the significance that Ancient Romans attached to food, the banquet, and the simple daily act of sharing food, while the text also offers new research findings on recipes and cooking technologies that have passed unnoticed.

Book Missionary Linguistics V Ling stica Misionera V

Download or read book Missionary Linguistics V Ling stica Misionera V written by Otto Zwartjes and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-04-15 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this volume is the study of missionary translation practices which occur within a colonial context of political domination and spiritual conquest. Missionary translation becomes especially manifest in bilingual ethnographic descriptions, in (bilingual) catechisms and in the missionaries’ lexicographic condensation of bilingual dictionaries. The study of these instances permits the analysis and interpretation of their guiding principles, their translation practice and underlying reasoning. It also permits the modern linguist to discern semantic changes that can be revealed in these missionary translations over certain periods. Up to now there has hardly been any study available that focuses on translation in missionary sources, of the different traditions in the Americas or Asia. This book will fill this gap, addressing the legacy of missionary translation practices and theories, the role of translation in evangelization and its particular form in the context of colonialism, the creation of loans from Spanish or Latin or equivalents or paraphrases in the indigenous languages in texts and dictionaries as translation strategies followed in bilingual editions. The process of acculturation and transculturation imposed by European religious systems is noted. This volume presents research on languages such as Nahuatl, Tarascan (Pur’épecha), Zapotec, Tamil, Chinese, Japanese, Pangasinán, and other Austronesian languages from the Philippines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1560's and the 1570’s, several authors outside of Spain recorded the text of an oath supposedly uttered by the Aragonese people when they received their king. While most modern historians doubt the authenticity of the oath, they agree that it has frequently served the purposes of political propaganda whenever an Aragonese patriot has wished to epitomize his nation’s tradition of resistance to tyranny. This book studies the oath "We, who are worth as much as you, take you as our king, provided that you preserve our laws and liberties, and if not, not" as an example of historiographical fiction which belongs to a complex of legal-historical legends about the origins of Aragon. Originally published in 1968. Book Ethical Self determination in Don Jos Ortega Y Gasset

Download or read book Ethical Self determination in Don Jos Ortega Y Gasset written by Carlos Ramos Mattei and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1987 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: José Ortega y Gasset distinguishes himself in twentieth-century philosophy by both his conviction that human life or activity is systematic and his conception of human reasoning as constituted in terms of what he calls «Historical Reason.» According to this study, it is in that concept of Historical Reason that we may also obtain the concept of a «material a priori principle» for the moral self-determination of the human subject.

Book The Stigmata in Medieval and Early Modern Europe

Download or read book The Stigmata in Medieval and Early Modern Europe written by Carolyn Muessig and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-06 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis of Assisi's reported reception of the stigmata on Mount La Verna in 1224 is almost universally considered to be the first documented account of an individual miraculously and physically receiving the five wounds of Christ. The early thirteenth-century appearance of this miracle, however, is not as unexpected as it first seems. Interpretations of Galatians 6:17—I bear the marks of the Lord Jesus Christ in my body—had been circulating since the early Middle Ages in biblical commentaries. These works perceived those with the stigmata as metaphorical representations of martyrs bearing the marks of persecution in order to spread the teaching of Christ in the face of resistance. By the seventh century, the meaning of Galatians 6:17 had been appropriated by bishops and priests as a sign or mark of Christ that they received invisibly at their ordination. Priests and bishops came to be compared to soldiers of Christ, who bore the brand (stigmata) of God on their bodies, just like Roman soldiers who were branded with the name of their emperor. By the early twelfth century, crusaders were said to bear the actual marks of the passion in death and even sometimes as they entered into battle. The Stigmata in Late Medieval and Early Modern Europe traces the birth and evolution of religious stigmata and particularly of stigmatic theology, as understood through the ensemble of theological discussions and devotional practices. Carolyn Muessig assesses the role stigmatics played in medieval and early modern religious culture, and the way their contemporaries reacted to them. The period studied covers the dominant discourse of stigmatic theology: that is, from Peter Damian's eleventh-century theological writings to 1630 when the papacy officially recognised the authenticity of Catherine of Siena's stigmata.
