Book Religion and Violence in South Asia

Download or read book Religion and Violence in South Asia written by John Hinnells and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-01-24 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do religions justify and cause violence or are they more appropriately seen as forces for peace and tolerance? Featuring contributions from international experts in the field, this book explores the debate that has emerged in the context of secular modernity about whether religion is a primary cause of social division, conflict and war, or whether this is simply a distortion of the ‘true’ significance of religion and that if properly followed it promotes peace, harmony, goodwill and social cohesion. Focusing on how this debate is played out in the South Asian context, the book engages with issues relating to religion and violence in both its classical and contemporary formations. The collection is designed to look beyond the stereotypical images and idealized portrayals of the peaceful South Asian religious traditions (especially Hindu, Buddhist, Jain and Sufi), which can occlude their own violent histories and to analyze the diverse attitudes towards, and manifestations of violence within the major religious traditions of South Asia. Divided into three sections, the book also discusses globalization and the theoretical issues that inform contemporary discussions of the relationship between religion and violence.

Globalization and increased ease of communication have led to the presence of a great plurality of Hindu traditions. The book emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of the study of religions, and bring together the voices of 30 scholars.

Book Creation and Evolution

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jacques Van Heerden
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2014-01-30
  • ISBN : 1491888792
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Creation and Evolution written by Jacques Van Heerden and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-01-30 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first few chapters of Genesis, which give the biblical account of Creation, may well be the most underrated text in existence! It has been misunderstood by many either read very naively as a simplistic description, or otherwise regarded as a bit of of the patchwork employed by a final redactor of the text. The vast majority of scientists regard it as infra dig. Ancient Hebrew thought patterns were quite different from our own. They were less interested in the process than in the origin -- the Creator in the Creation stories and the result. Symbolism, exemplified in numbers and colors, were tremendously important. Central to all their thinking was the worship of the LORD God Almighty and the tabernacle, which was later replaced by the temple. All this has a bearing on our interpretation of Genesis. The best translation of Gen 1:2 is as follows: Gen 1:2 The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep water. The Spirit of God was hovering over the water. (Gods Word) The two terms, formless and empty, are the first key to understand what follows, namely a giving shape to that which had no form, and then filling the forms. The whole description speaks of a dynamic system, not a rigid structure cast in concrete. What transpires in the end is that there is no conflict between Creation and Evolution, except that the naturalists natural selection was actually divine selection, not a random process, but a directed development to reach a very specific goal. The Christian believer should take comfort in the fact that our Bible is in perfect harmony with the best up-to-date science. The scientist should take note that the biblical account had to be inspired by God to relate something of real meaning to us through an author who had no proper knowledge of the universe and no understanding of evolution.

Book Imagining a Place for Buddhism

Download or read book Imagining a Place for Buddhism written by Anne E. Monius and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-06 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Tamil-speaking South India is celebrated for its preservation of Hindu tradition, other religious communities have played a significant role in shaping the region's religious history. Among these non-Hindu communities is that of the Buddhists, who are little-understood because of the scarcity of remnants of Tamil-speaking Buddhist culture. Here, focusing on the two Buddhist texts in Tamil that are complete (a sixth-century poetic narrative and an eleventh-century treatise on grammar and poetics), Monius sheds light on the role of literature and literary culture in the formation, articulation, and evolution of religious identity and community.
