Book excerpt: EUSEBIO DE CESAREA vivio bajo la persecucion de Diocleciano, asistio a los cambios que trajeron la paz a la Iglesia, y se encontro enseguida en el centro de la controversia arriana. Nacio probablemente en Cesarea de Palestina, hacia el 263. Fue discipulo de Panfilo de Cesarea y, a traves de el, de Origenes, y conservo siempre una gran veneracion por ambos. Cesarea era entonces un centro importante del saber, por obra de Origenes, y la biblioteca que este habia fundado era extremadamente rica. El ano 313, Eusebio comienza a ser obispo de Cesarea. Cuando estallo la gran crisis arriana, no parece que Eusebio se diera cuenta de la gravedad del problema. Al principio defendio a Arrio; luego se pronuncio por la divinidad del Hijo, pero se opuso al empleo del termino homousios, pues le parecia que llevaba al modalismo, e insistia en que esa divinidad del Hijo se debe formular con expresiones biblicas, y no con terminos filosoficos; al final acabo firmando las actas del concilio de Nicea, aunque protestando interiormente. Poco despues, en la reorganizacion del partido pro arriano que siguio casi enseguida de la terminacion del concilio, se alio abiertamente con Eusebio de Nicomedia, el obispo de la corte que acaudillaba ahora esta faccion. Tuvo una actuacion destacada en el sinodo de Antioquia (330) que substituyo al obispo de esta ciudad por uno arriano, y en el sinodo de Tiro (335), que excomulgo a San Atanasio. Tambien escribio dos tratados contra el obispo Marcelo de Ancira, niceno, que fue depuesto poco despues. Eusebio murio el ano 339."
