Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses contemporary discourses on a wide variety of topics related to the ideological and epistemological changes of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, and the ways in which they have shaped the Spanish language and cultural manifestations in both Spain and Hispanic America. The majority of the chapters are concerned with ‘otherness’ in its various dimensions; the alien Other – foreign, immigrant, ethnically different, disempowered, female or minor – as well as the Other of different sexual orientation and/or ideology. Following Octavio Paz, otherness is expressed as the attempt to find the lost object of desire, the frustrating endeavour of the androgynous Plato wishing to embrace the other half of Zeus, who in his wrath, tore off from him. Otherness compels human beings to search for the complement from which they were severed. Thus a male joins a female, his other half, the only half that not only fills him but which allows him to return to the unity and reconciliation which is restored in its own perfection, formerly altered by divine will. As a result of this transformation, one can annul the distance that keeps us away from that which, not being our own, turns into a source of anguish. The clashing diversity of all things requires the human predisposition to accept that which is different. Such a predisposition is an expression of epistemological, ethical and political aperture. The disposition to co-exist with the different is imagined in the de-anthropocentricization of the bonds with all living realms. And otherness is, in some way, the reflection of sameness (mismidad). The other is closely related to the self, because the vision of the other implies a reflection about the self; it implies, consciously or not, a relationship with the self. These topics are addressed in this book from an interdisciplinary perspective, encompassing arts, humanities and social sciences.

Book excerpt: CLASSIC EARLY HORROR IN THE STYLE OF MR JAMES BY A FRIEND AND COLLEAGUE "The haunted house story becomes a real nerve-shredder..." 'Adrian Ross' was a great name to conjure with in the early years of the 20th century. A founding father of 'musical comedy', this celebrated librettist wrote over two thousand lyrics and worked on around sixty popular musicals, including the hugely successful English versions of The Merry Widow and Lilac Time. In his completely different earlier life, under his own name of Arthur R. Ropes, he was a multi-talented Cambridge don, a Senior Fellow at King's College during the 1880s, alongside M.R. James. He composed two impressive works of supernatural horror fiction - both narrated by Cambridge scholars - which appear here together in one volume for the first time. Ross and James were among the first writers of the late nineteenth century who moved away from the familiar traditional Victorian ghosts to the much stranger world of centuries-old demons, all extremely dangerous and horrifying, defying any clear description. For example, the traditional haunted house tale takes a hideous descent into grave terror here. While the Collected Ghost Stories of M.R. James have been widely available for decades, it is now time for the collected horror fiction of 'Adrian Ross' to be available for the present 21st century generation. Book excerpt: The music and noise manifestos of the Italian Futurists formed a blueprint for sonic warfare waged against traditionalism, a radical new agenda played out with machines primed for maximal acoustic destruction and aimed at the negation of all existing value systems. THEe ^ARTe ^OFe ^NOISE collects together these and other writings for the first time in English, showing how the origins of modern noise music actually date from a century ago, forming an invaluable insight into Futurist thought and its most enduring and relevant legacies, and revealing how an understanding of noise-art is key to a complete comprehension of Futurist painting. THEe ^ARTe ^OFe ^NOISE includes five key Futurist manifestos: Luigi Russolo's "The Art of Noises" and "The Futurist Noise Machines", and Francesco Balilla Pratella's "Manifesto of Futurist Musicians", "Technical Manifesto of Futurist Music", and "Destruction of Quadrature"; plus Carlo Carra 's related sensory manifesto "The Painting of Sounds, Noises and Smells"; Bruno Corra's notes on "Chromatic Music"; proto-Futurist Ferrucchio Busoni's visionary and influential "Sketch for a New Aesthetic of Sound Art"; a historical introduction on Futurist music and its legacy; and a chronology of Futurist music and noise.
