Desde los pensadores presocráticos y los sofistas contamos con observaciones acerca del lenguaje, sus particularidades y potencias, pero habrá que esperar hasta los últimos siglos antes de nuestra era para encontrar conformado un cuerpo de saber sobre la gramática que pueda ser considerado propiamente máthesis, una disciplina. De hecho, es en la obra de Dionisio Tracio, Técnica Gramática, donde encontramos por primera vez una caracterización de la misma, y la atribución a tal cuerpo de saber de cualidades técnicas. En efecto, nos dice Dionisio que “la gramática es el conocimiento de lo dicho sobre todo por poetas y prosistas. Sus partes son seis: primera, lectura cuidada según la prosodia; segunda, explicación de las figuras poéticas que hubiere; tercera, interpretación en términos usuales de las palabras raras y de los argumentos; cuarta, búsqueda de la etimología; quinta, exposición de la analogía; sexta, critica de los poemas, que es la parte más bella de todas las de la gramática”. Considerando esta obra como un referente insoslayable de la grammatikè tékhne, esta compilación de artículos se encarga de abrir la perspectiva de las reflexiones que la antecedieron, desde los sofistas, Sócrates, Platón y Aristóteles, hasta algunas líneas que recibieron su legado, como las propuestas por Epicuro, por Sexto Empírico y por Aulo Gelio.
