Download or read book A Study in Anti Gnostic Polemics written by Gerard Vallee and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gnostic beliefs presented themselves as a major challenge to Irenaeus of Lyons (Against Heresies, ca. A.D. 180), Hippolytus of Rome (the presumed author of the Elenchos Against All Heresies, post-A.D. 222), and Epiphanius of Salamis (Panarion, A.D. 374-77). What was at stake for them were life-and-death issues; the nature of Christianity and the question of truth. While recent manuscript finds shed new light on gnostic thought, the writings of the heresiologists are still indispensable--for knowledge of gnostic teaching but also of "what certain influential authors in the emergence of catholic Christianity considered ... the pivotal point on which Christianity would stand or fall." The writings of these three heresiologists, observes Vallée, offer "excellent illustrations of what heresiology was in three successive centuries" and how it developed. Their influence on the style of Christian polemics was decisive and lasting. Valllée analyzes the arguments of each of the three heresiologists in order to discern the central concerns of each.

Download or read book Hortus Deliciarum written by Herrad (of Landsberg, Abbess of Hohenburg) and published by Brill Archive. This book was released on 1979 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first reconstruction of the Hortus deliciarum, the unique manuscript of which was destroyed in 1870. The text was established from 19th-century transcripts (principally those made for Comte A. De Bastard), from printed sources, and from C. M. Engelhardt's record of the German glosses as editor E. Von Steinmeyer. The miniatures are reproduced from the best copies, some in versions previously unpublished. Variants are also included. All the painted copies are reproduced in colour. The reconstruction restores the original sequence of text and illustrations and is intended to replace the obsolete publication of Alexandre Straub and Gustave Keller (1879-99). The edition was prepared under the supervision of Professor Rosalie Green, Director of the Index of Christian Art at Princeton University, who is responsible for the placing of illustrations and text, for the catalogue of the miniatures and for the comparative illustrations. Dr Michael Evans, of the Warburg Institute, and Mlle Christine Bischoff established and ordered the text. Professor Michael Curschmann of Princeton University reconstructed the distribution of the German glosses. The commentary volume includes: Description of the Manuscript and the Reconstruction, by Michael Evans; L'Histoire, par Christine Bischoff; The Miniatures, by Rosalie Green; Le Texte, par Christine Bischoff; The German Glosses, by Michael Curschmann; The Palaeography, by T. Julian Brown; The Musical Notation, by Kenneth Levy; Catalogue of Miniatures, by Rosalie Green.

Download or read book Religion Children s Literature and Modernity in Western Europe 1750 2000 written by Jan de Maeyer and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book some 25 scholars focus on the relationship between religion, children's literature and modernity in Western Europe since the Enlightenment (c. 1750). They examine various aspects of the phenomenon of children's literature, such as types of texts, age of readers, position of authors, design and illustration. The role of religion in giving meaning both in a substantive sense as well as through the institutionalised churches is studied from an interdenominational point of view (Judaism, Roman Catholicism, Protestantism and Anglicanism). Finally, the contribution of pedagogy and child psychology in the interaction between modernity, religion and children's literature is also discussed.Various articles give a broad overview of the tensions between aesthetics and ethics and the demand for cultural autonomy in the development of children's literature. Children's bibles and missionary stories played an important part in the growing diversification of children's literature, as did the publication of illustrated reviews for children. Remarkable differences are highlighted in the involvement of religious societies and institutions, episcopally approved publishing houses and supervisory bodies in the publication, distribution and supervision of children's literature. This volume adopts a comparative approach in exploring the underlying religious, ideological and cultural dimensions of children's literature in modern society.)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Annunciation: a specific event recounted in the Bible and often represented in artworks, but also the prototype of many other announcements throughout the history of Western culture. This volume proposes new readings of pictorial Annunciations from the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period – treating aspects such as witnesses, inscriptions and architecture – as well as analyses of some visual echoes, reenactments of the announcement to Mary in sacred and profane contexts up to the twenty-first century. Among the latter are included Venetian decoration glorifying the state, a Jean-Luc Godard film, a video art piece by Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Lars von Trier’s Melancholia and a saint’s bedroom turned into a pilgrimage site.
