Book Re writing and Remembering

Download or read book Re writing and Remembering written by James Dalrymple and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-02-08 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recounting past events is intrinsic to the storytelling function, as most fiction assumes the past tense as the natural means of narrating a story. Few narratives draw attention to this process, yet others make the act of remembering a primary part of the narrative situation. Ranging in its focus from poetry to novels, autobiographical memoirs and biopics – from the ostensibly fictional to the implicitly real – this volume discusses the extent to which such fictional acts of remembering are also acts of rewriting the past to suit the needs of the present. How seamlessly does experience yield to the ordering strictures of narrative and what is at stake in the process? What must be omitted or stylised, and to what (ideological) end? In making an artefact of the past, what role does artifice play, and what does this process also tell us about history-making?

Book Cinematic perspectives on international law

Download or read book Cinematic perspectives on international law written by Olivier Corten and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed volume consists of an edited collection within the new Melland Schill Guidebooks on International Law (MSGIL) series. In line with the MSGIL objective of inclusiveness, originality, perspectivism and critical thought, the book is the first of an intended series pertaining to perspectives related to the ways in which the arts influence the perception and attitude of the public towards international law, and the manner this affects the discipline, both in terms of its own development and in terms of its social legitimacy. The book contrasts the narratives of international law depicted in cinema and TV productions with the corresponding narratives advanced by legal scholars. It identifies a cognitive dissonance between them and ascertains its implications on general perceptions of international law.

Book The Cine Goes to Town

Download or read book The Cine Goes to Town written by Richard Abel and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Abel's magisterial new book radically rewrites the history of French cinema between 1896 and 1914, particularly during the years when Pathé-Frères, the first major corporation in the new industry, led the world in film production and distribution. Based on extensive investigation of rare archival films and documents, and drawing on recent social and cultural histories of turn-of-the-century France and the United States, his book provides new insights into the earliest history of the cinema. Abel tells how early French film entertainment changed from a cinema of attractions to the narrative format that Hollywood would so successfully exploit. He describes the popular genres of the era—comic chases, trick films and féeries, historical and biblical stories, family melodramas and grand guignol tales, crime and detective films—and shows the shift from short subjects to feature-length films. Cinema venues evolved along with the films as live music, color effects, and other new exhibiting techniques and practices drew larger and larger audiences. Abel explores the ways these early films mapped significant differences in French social life, helping to produce thoroughly bourgeois citizens for Third Republic France. The Ciné Goes to Town recovers early French cinema's unique contribution to the development of the mass culture industry. As the one-hundredth anniversary of cinema approaches, this compelling demonstration of film's role in the formation of social and national identity will attract a wide audience of film scholars, social and cultural historians, and film enthusiasts.

Book Madonna as Postmodern Myth

Download or read book Madonna as Postmodern Myth written by Georges-Claude Guilbert and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-10-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madonna has long been accepted as a pop culture icon, but this text postulates a greater cultural importance by analyzing her as a postmodern myth. This work examines how Madonna methodically discovered and constructed herself (often rewriting her past), the nature and extent of her ambition and the means she used to reach her goals. It also details the way in which she organized her own cult (borrowing from the gay community), devised her artistic output, and cunningly targeted different audiences. It also studies the fundamental contradiction--virgin or vamp? saint or prostitute?--that fuels Madonna's career and describes how Madonna reflects today's society, its contradictions and its attitudes toward sexuality and religion.

Book excerpt: À la rencontre du cinéma français: analyse, genre, histoire is intended to serve as the core textbook in a wide variety of upper-level undergraduate and graduate French cinema courses. Sufficient proficiency in French is the sole prerequisite: “No previous background in film studies is assumed, nor is any prior acquaintance with French cinema. It will help, of course, to like movies, and to have seen quite a few…' (from the preface).

Book Cinema of Pain

    Book Details:
  • Author : Liz Czach
  • Publisher : Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press
  • Release : 2020-07-29
  • ISBN : 1771124350
  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book Cinema of Pain written by Liz Czach and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2020-07-29 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the defeat of the pro-sovereigntists in the 1995 Quebec referendum, the loss of a cohesive nationalistic vision in the province has led many Québécois to use their ancestral origins to inject meaning into their everyday lives. A Cinema of Pain argues that this phenomenon is observable in a pervasive sense of nostalgia in Quebec culture and is especially present in the province’s vibrant but deeply wistful cinema. In Québécois cinema, nostalgia not only denotes a sentimental longing for the bucolic pleasures of bygone French-Canadian traditions, but, as this edited collection suggests, it evokes the etymological sense of the term, which underscores the element of pain (algos) associated with the longing for a return home (nostos). Whether it is in grandiloquent historical melodramas such as Séraphin: un homme et son péché (Binamé 2002), intimate realist dramas like Tout ce que tu possèdes (Émond 2012), charming art films like C.R.A.Z.Y. (Vallée 2005), or even gory horror movies like Sur le Seuil (Tessier 2003), the contemporary Québécois screen projects an image of shared suffering that unites the nation through a melancholy search for home.

Book Hollywood Films in North Africa and the Middle East

Download or read book Hollywood Films in North Africa and the Middle East written by Nolwenn Mingant and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2022-05-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on a broad range of primary sources, from trade and government publications to interviews, Hollywood Films in North Africa and the Middle East traces the circulation of Hollywood films across the region from the early twentieth century to the present. Originally introduced by French distributors, Hollywood films have been a key component of film culture in North Africa and the Middle East. These films became a favored mode of entertainment during the first half of the century as the major US film studios built a strong distribution structure. After World War II, the changing geopolitical context of decolonization pushed US distributors out of the market. Hollywood films, however, have continued to be favored by audiences. Today, in a landscape that also includes Egyptian and Indian films, Hollywood remains a relevant force in the region’s film culture, experienced by audiences in myriad ways from the pirate markets of North Africa to state-of-the-art theatres in the United Arab Emirates.
