Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book of its kind in English, Beyond No Future: Cultures of German Punk explores the texts and contexts of German punk cultures. Notwithstanding its "no future" sloganeering, punk has had a rich and complex life in German art and letters, in German urban landscapes, and in German youth culture. Beyond No Future collects innovative, methodologically diverse scholarly contributions on the life and legacy of these cultures. Focusing on punk politics and aesthetics in order to ask broader questions about German nationhood(s) in a period of rapid transition, this text offers a unique view of the decade bookended by the “German Autumn” and German unification. Consulting sources both published and unpublished, aesthetic and archival, Beyond No Future's contributors examine German punk's representational strategies, anti-historical consciousness, and refusal of programmatic intervention into contemporary political debates. Taken together, these essays demonstrate the importance of punk culture to historical, political, economic, and cultural developments taking place both in Germany and on a broader transnational scale.

Book The German Revolution of 1848 49

Download or read book The German Revolution of 1848 49 written by Wolfram Siemann and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1998-10-15 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finally available in English to coincide with the 150th anniversary, this highly original study of the German Revolution of 1848-49 examines the "failure" of the revolution, its repression and the attempts to come to terms with this repression. Wolfram Siemann's analysis centers on the contradictory forms of collective protest, the tensions in the social, agrarian and commercial spheres, the nature of the crisis cycles of the Vormarz period, the different stages of development in individual German territories, and the regional centers of industrialization and politicization. It is against this backdrop that the "failure" of the revolution is put into perspective.

Book Establishment of European frontiers after the two world wars

Download or read book Establishment of European frontiers after the two world wars written by Université de Strasbourg 2 and published by Bern : P. Lang. This book was released on 1996 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The establishment of new frontiers in Europe was one of the most significant results of the two World Wars. The proceedings of two international conferences, in Strasbourg and Montréal, treat this question from a comparative historical point of view. This book not only deals with the purely diplomatic sphere but also includes the economic, cultural, social, and political dimensions of frontier changes. These proceedings analyze the impact of public opinion on contemporary international relations. They also illustrate the global aspects of European politics as well as the role of outside states in the alteration of Europe's borders and in the quest for a new power balance in the two postwar periods.

Book The Victims at the Berlin Wall 1961 1989

Download or read book The Victims at the Berlin Wall 1961 1989 written by Hans-Hermann Hertle and published by Ch. Links Verlag. This book was released on 2011 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many deaths at the Berlin Wall have been publicized over the years in the media, the number, identity and fate of the victims still remain largely unknown. This handbook changes this by answering the following questions: How many people actually died at the Berlin Wall between 1961 and 1989? Who were these people? How did they die? How were their relatives and their friends treated after their deaths? What public and political reactions were triggered in the East and the West by these fatalities? What were the consequences for the border guards who pulled the trigger and the military and political leaders who gave them their orders after the East German border regime collapsed and the Wall fell? How have the victims been commemorated since their deaths? By documenting the lives and circumstances under which these men and women died at the Wall, these deaths are placed in a contemporary historical context. The authors, in addition to systematically researching the relevant archives and examining all the legal proceedings and Stasi documents, also conducted interviews with family members and contemporary witnesses.

Book excerpt: A political biography of Darre, appointed National Peasant Leader and Minister of Food and Agriculture in 1933. Argues that his ecological ideas are still worthy of attention despite his racism. Although he believed in eugenics and Nordic racism, he did not emphasize their antisemitic aspect until after joining the Nazi Party in 1930, when he began to speak of the Jews as leaders of the capitalist urban threat to rural Germany and of an international Jewish conspiracy. He opposed anti-Jewish boycotts and delayed the Aryanization of Jewish land until 1940, not wanting his land reform program to be controlled by Nazi antisemitism. Although he was excluded from policy decisions after 1939, and dismissed in 1942, Darre was tried as a war criminal in 1949 and found guilty of participation in the Aryanization program and of expropriation of Polish and Jewish farmlands during the resettlement of ethnic Germans.
