Book excerpt: This book aims to redress the balance in the field of Contemporary Philosophy, considered predominantly male, by highlighting the philosophical achievements of various female figures during the period 1870-1970. Contemporary Philosophy is generally presented by its historians as a field founded entirely by men, with no prominent female contributors. Historical investigation of the development of contemporary analytic philosophy, for example, usually centres around Frege, Russell, and Wittgenstein, with occasional ventures into Moore or the Vienna Circle. Such accounts leave out vast swathes of the historical record (from early 19th century to 20th century), in particular the women, including Christine Ladd-Franklin, Sophie Bryant, E.E.C. Jones, Susan Stebbing, Dorothy Wrinch, Alice Ambrose, Margaret MacDonald, Martha Kneale, Ruth Barcan Marcus and Ayda Ignez Arruda publishing on themes central to analytic philosophy– logic, language, realism, and relations. It is noteworthy that this pattern in historiography is not unique to one strand of philosophy or one part of the world but re-appears again and again. In the continental tradition, the development of Schopenhauer's philosophy leaves out significant contributions of women such as Olga Plümacher. The chapters in this book examine central themes from the perspective of female philosophers to provide a fuller picture of Philosophy of this period. This volume will be a great resource for academics, researchers, and advanced students of Philosophy and Women’s Studies and for everyone interested in the contribution of women philosophers. The previous year's rainy season had been sparse, and the harvest, poor. Now, this season's rains still had not appeared. This was the Great Drought -- three years of failed rains enshrined in Brazilian memory as the worst drought ever to hit Brazil's northeast. Drought had visited the region throughout its history, with the earliest recorded occurrences dating back to the 16th century. The failure of rains in 1877 was devastating, for it caught the provinces of the north totally unprepared. The specter of periodic droughts producing dislocation and death continues to haunt the region.

Book excerpt: ORIGIN OF THE PROJECT In Spring of 1968 a research project concerning the scholastic philosophy in the Iberian Colonies of America was submitted to the Institute of Latin American Studies in the University of Texas by Dr. Ignacio Angelelli, of the Department of Philosophy of the same University. I should like to quote some relevant passages from the proposal by way of historical back ground. In the last decade, leading philosophical historiography has become more and more interested in the "minor" figures and the "traditional" schools which flourished between 1500 and 1800. Historians of philosophy are interested not only in men like Descartes and Kant, but also in the less brilliant and more "conservative" authors. It is also interesting to note in this regard that the late Professor P. Wilpert (Cologne), editor of the new edition of Ueberweg, intended to divide the section on the Neuzeit into two volumes, one for the major figures and the other for the exponents of the various forms of scholasticism of the period 1500-1800. One of these conservative philosophical movements is what has been called the seconda scolastica, which developed in Catholic countries and particularly in Spain and Portugal. Naturally, this "traditional" thought in Europe after 1500 was bound to have an impact on the Spanish and Portuguese Colonies. Indeed, the amount of scholastic philosophy taught in the American Colonies between 1530 and 1800 is impressive. This fact has not yet been acknowledged by international historiography.

Book excerpt: This is a detailed study of British influence in Brazil as a theme within the larger story of modernization. The British were involved at key points in the initial stages of modernization. Their hold upon the import-export economy tended to slow down industrialization, and there were other areas in which their presence acted as a brake upon Brazilian modernization. But the British also fostered change. British railways provided primary stimulus to the growth of coffee exports, and since the British did not monopolize coffee production, a large proportion of the profits remained in Brazilian hands for other uses. Furthermore, the burgeoning coffee economy shattered traditional economic, social and political relationships, opening up the way for other areas of growth. The British role was not confined to economic development. They also contributed to the growth of 'a modern world-view'. Spencerianism and the idea of progress, for instance, were not exotic and meaningless imports, but an integral part of the transformation Brazil was experiencing.
