Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pictorial history of beautiful Lake Champlain from one end to the other...highlighting nature and recreation along with commerce and trade. Nestled between the Adirondacks of New York and Vermont's Green Mountains, Lake Champlain offers 120 miles of tranquil beauty with a rich, bustling history. Picturesque waterfront communities established in the 18th century recall the era when the Champlain Valley's natural resources--iron, lumber, granite, marble, and potash--were shipped to distant ports on lake sloops and schooners. By the early 19th century, Lake Champlain was connected with the canals of New York and Quebec, and the resulting economic boom lasted for 100 years. Apples, hay, bricks, and finished goods were shipped on thousands of workaday canal boats that were also floating family homes. Massive steamboats carried travelers and tourists drawn to the fresh country air, and lakefront camps sprang up everywhere. Automobiles traveled over Lake Champlain on ferries and bridges. Through stunning historical images from the archives of Lake Champlain Maritime Museum and other regional collections, Lake Champlain tells the story of this busy commercial corridor and pastoral recreational destination.

This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peter Sailly Palmer's History of Lake Champlain is a meticulously researched and engagingly written account of the region's colonial and Revolutionary War-era history. Palmer was a lawyer, politician, and amateur historian who drew on his own extensive research, as well as the work of earlier historians, to create a comprehensive narrative of the lake's importance in the wider context of American history. The book covers topics ranging from Samuel de Champlain's first encounters with Native Americans in the region to Benedict Arnold's ill-fated naval battles during the Revolutionary War. Book History of Lake Champlain

Download or read book History of Lake Champlain written by Peter S. Palmer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Lake Champlain: From Its First Exploration by the French in 1609 Lake Champlain extends from the 43 30" to the 45 north latitude, and lies between Vermont and New York - the boundary line of those States running through its centre. The lake is about ninety miles in length, in a right line from North to South, with a length of coast, on each side, of about one hundred and twenty-five miles: its southern extremity, or head, being at Whitehall, and its northern near the boundary line between the United States and Canada. The lake varies in width from one-fourth of a mile to thirteen miles, and its waters cover an area of about five hundred square miles. It receives the waters of Lake George, at Ticonderoga, and discharges itself into the St. Lawrence, through the river Richelieu. There is no perceivable current in the body of the lake, and, its waters, at ordinary stages, pass into the Richelieu with a velocity of only one-third of a mile per hour. The Lake has two arms; one on the west side, near its southern extremity, called South Bay, the other, on the east side, near its northern extremity, called Missisco Bay. This last mentioned bay stretches into Canada and covers about thirty-five square miles. The area of country, drained into the lake, is variously estimated from seven thousand to nine thousand square miles. It probably approaches nearest to the larger estimate.
