Book Health Policy And The Hispanic

Download or read book Health Policy And The Hispanic written by Antonio Furino and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the many dimensions of Hispanic health issues, this book updates interested readers with recent information and offers a view of the depth, scope, and complementarity of the challenges of providing adequate health care. Accordingly, the book is organized in four sections addressing, first, the conceptual, institutional, and policy elements of the problems and their solutions; second, the clinical evidence about diseases for which Hispanics are disproportionally at risk; third, social and economic factors that have an impact on the health status of Hispanics; and, fourth, future policy options that could improve the health conditions of this increasingly large and underserved group of Americans. While clarifying the issues, the book documents the importance of seeking solutions to Hispanic health problems with determination and haste. Hispanics will soon represent the largest minority in American society. And, 20 million people with Latin American and Spanish origins contribute a large, youthful, and potentially very productive group of workers to our aging labor force. Finally, in searching for solutions to Hispanic health challenges, we learn that in order to improve the health of all Americans, while containing costs, it is necessary to address, proactively, the special needs of our culturally diverse society.

Book Public Engagement on Facilitating Access to Antiviral Medications and Information in an Influenza Pandemic

Download or read book Public Engagement on Facilitating Access to Antiviral Medications and Information in an Influenza Pandemic written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-07-20 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Influenza pandemics overwhelm health care systems with thousands or hundreds of thousands of sick patients, as well as those worried they may be sick. In order to ensure a successful response to the patient swell caused by a pandemic, robust planning is essential to prepare for challenges public health officials may face. This includes the need to quickly distribute and dispense antiviral medications that can reduce the severity and duration of disease to large numbers of people. In response to a request from the Centers for Disease Control, the Institute of Medicine's Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness for Catastrophic Events held a series of workshops that explored the public's perception of how to facilitate access to antiviral medications and treatment during an influenza pandemic. To help inform potential strategies still in the development stages at the CDC, workshops were held in Fort Benton, Montana; Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Los Angeles, California during February and March 2012 to consider the usefulness of several alternative strategies of delivering antiviral medication to the public. Participants considered how the normal systems for prescribing and dispensing antiviral medications could be adjusted to ensure that the public has quick, safe, and equitable access to both potentially life-saving drugs and information about the pandemic and treatment options. This document summarizes the workshops.

Book Achieving Equitable Access

Download or read book Achieving Equitable Access written by Wilhelmina Leigh and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1996 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past thirty years, the United States has made remarkable progress in reducing barriers in access to health care faced by racial and ethnic minority Americans. Most minority Americans born in the 1950s have vivid memories of 'separate and unequal' health facilities. By the 1980s, overt and blatant barriers to care were uncommon. In spite of the progress achieved, recent studies continue to provide evidence that minority Americans experience differential access to health coverage and to some health procedures. To investigate these differentials, contributors to this volume were asked to examine the health care experiences of nonelderly Hispanics and African-Americans within a nationally representative data source: the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey. Through this effort, the authors document the extent to which barriers to access persist and provide insight on possible explanations for variations in access. This volume will provide policymakers, practitioners, and advocates with an objective base of important information to guide decision-making about health care policy.

Book Mexican Migration to the United States

Download or read book Mexican Migration to the United States written by Harriet D. Romo and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2016-03-29 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology examining borderlands migration brings together the perspectives of Mexican and US scholars from a variety of fields. Gathering a transnational group of prominent researchers, including leading Mexican scholars whose work is not readily available in the United States, this collection brings together an array of often-overlooked viewpoints, reflecting the interconnectedness of immigration policy. These essays reveal significant aspects of labor markets, family life, and educational processes. They capture the evolving legal frameworks and economic implications of Mexico-US migrations at the national and municipal levels, as well as the experiences of receiving communities in the United States. The volume includes illuminating reports on populations ranging from undocumented young adults to elite Mexican women immigrants, health-care rights, Mexico’s incorporation of return migration, the impact of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals on higher education, and the experiences of young children returning to Mexican schools after living in the United States. Reflecting a multidisciplinary approach, the list of contributors includes anthropologists, demographers, economists, educators, policy analysts, and sociologists. Underscoring the fact that Mexican migration to the United States is unique and complex, this timely work exemplifies the cross-border collaboration crucial to the development of immigration policies that serve people in both countries.
