Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the eyeball is indented in total darkness, within less than 200 mil liseconds an oval or quarter-moon shaped spot of light is perceived in the part of the visual field corresponding to the indented region of the retina. In the seconds following, this phosphene extends across the whole visual field and alters in structure during further eyeball indentation. It is then seen as irregular large bright spots of light, finely structured moving light grains ('light nebula') and stationary bright stars. Regular geometrical patterns appear only when both eyes are indented simultaneously [1]. When the eyeball deformation is released, part of the retina again lights up for another one or two seconds and curved light lines are seen following the course of the larger retinal vessels (Fig. 1). In the following we will review the history of this phenomenon, which played an important role during the first 2200 years of vision theories and in the development of models to explain normal vision. 2. Pre-Socratic philosophers, Plato and Aristotle Alcmaeon of Croton (6-5th century B. C. ), who was a member of the Pythagoraean sect and one of the founders of Greek medicine, was the first to describe mechanical deformation of the eyeball leading to light sensa tions. According to Aristotle's pupil Theophrast of Eresos, Alcmaeon report ed that 'the eye obviously has fire within, for when the eye is struckfireflashes out' [2, p. 88].

Download or read book The Eye and the Beholder written by Hannelore Hägele and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-02 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Eye and the Beholder the author singles out a topic already touched upon in her previous book, Colour in Sculpture. By raising the question of how significant the colouring of the eye is to figurative representations of the late medieval and early modern period, Hannelore Hägele examines the different solutions open to the sculptor, which vary depending on historical and cultural parameters. The created eye must suit purpose and style. She discusses a number of unusual aspects of this: sculpted eyes in antiquity; the art and craft of polychromy; partial polychromy; emotions and expressions; the gaze and the glance; from the sculpted eye to colour and the glass eye; and what the eye cannot see. Dr Hägele asks whether advances in optics and other sciences, or theological concepts such as the eye of God and the inner eye, determined the way in which eyes were perceived and represented. It is the beholder, whether as maker or viewer, who engages with and judges the worth of any creative effort and what it contributes to an understanding of the seen and the unseen. The illustrations and the many coloured plates accompanying the text offer an overview of the subject.
Download or read book Healing Your Eyes with Chinese Medicine written by Andy Rosenfarb and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2011-08-30 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optimal eye health is just around the corner with this guide to treating common eye disorders with acupuncture, herbs, and other tenets of Chinese medicine For the past ten years, Andy Rosenfarb has successfully used acupuncture and Chinese medicine to treat a wide range of eye conditions. His treatments include moxibustion techniques, tuina (massage), microcurrent stimulation, Chinese herbs, and qigong exercises, along with “essential acupuncture” where essential oils are placed on acupuncture points. The culmination of his work—which includes a recent pioneering study involving metabolic testing—is this handbook for healing the kinds of conditions too often considered almost impossibly challenging or irreversible. The first half of Healing Your Eyes with Chinese Medicine explains Traditional Chinese Medicine and its perspective on the eyes, which is based on the idea that the eyes and the brain work in tandem, not isolation. The second half focuses on proven methods derived from Rosenfarb’s practice, including nutritional, supplemental, and lifestyle adjustments. Individual chapters cover eye disorders such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and many more. This book is intended as a practical manual to help readers understand their eyes and vision more comprehensively, and to learn new, affordable ways for retaining the precious gift of sight.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2002. The history of science is one of knowledge being passed from community to community over thousands of years, and this is the classic account of the most influential of these movements -how Hellenistic science passed to the Arabs where it took on a new life and led to the development of Arab astronomy and medicine which flourished in the courts of the Muslim world, later passing on to medieval Europe. Starting with the rise of Hellenism in Asia in the wake of the campaigns of Alexander the Great, O'Leary deals with the Greek legacy of science, philosophy, mathematics and medicine and follows it as it travels across the Near East propelled by religion, trade and conquest. Dealing in depth with Christianity as a Hellenizing force, the influence of the Nestorians and the Monophysites; Indian influences by land and sea and the rise of Buddhism, O'Leary then focuses on the development of science during the Baghdad Khalifate, the translation of Greek scientific material into Arabic, and the effect for all those interested in the history of medicine and science, and of historical geography as well as the history of the Arab world.
