Book excerpt: Hiroshi Suzuki has an extraordinary talent for raising silver from single flat sheets to create vessels that are full of flowing, vigorous, graceful lines. His work is intuitive and combines traditional skills with a unique and personal visual vocabulary. He was born in Japan in 1961 and studied at Musashino Art University in Tokyo before coming to London to study at Camberwell College of Art and the Royal College of Art, graduating with an MA in 1999. In 2005 he was short-listed for the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize: Metal (UK), and he won the Schoonhoven Silver Award in 2009 (The Netherlands). He is currently Professor of Metalwork and Jewellery at Musashino Art University, with studios in Tokyo and London. This book celebrates the development of Hiroshi Suzuki's work since his graduation from the Royal College of Art, featuring interviews with the artist on his working techniques and is published to coincide with an exhibition of silver vessels by Hiroshi Suzuki to open at Goldsmith's Hall, London, in February 2010 which will then travel to Chatsworth House, Derbyshire. AUTHOR: Timothy Schroder joined the silver department at Christie's in 1976 and has since worked as a dealer and museum curator in London and Los Angeles. He lectures and writes on silver and the decorative arts. SELLING POINTS: *First monograph on the extraordinary skills of a leading contemporary silver artist whose work appears in private and public collections all over the world *Includes an interview with the artist about his processes, influences and techniques *An exhibition of silver vessels by Hiroshi Suzuki is to open at Goldsmiths' Hall, London, in February 2010 and travel to Chatsworth House, Derbyshire 55 colour illustrations

Book excerpt: Shinichi Suzuki, of the eponymous Suzuki Method, debunked Western stereotypes about “authentic” classical performance while transforming music education globally. Yet as Eri Hotta shows, his movement was about much more than developing music skills. A committed humanist, he aspired to nurture the potential, musical or otherwise, in every child.
Download or read book Path Integrals and Quantum Anomalies written by Kazuo Fujikawa and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-29 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Feynman path integrals are becoming increasingly important in the applications of quantum mechanics and field theory. The path integral formulation of quantum anomalies, i.e. the quantum breaking of certain symmetries, can now cover all the known quantum anomalies in a coherent manner. In this book the authors provide an introduction to the path integral method in quantum field theory and its applications to the analyses of quantum anomalies. No previous knowledge of fieldtheory beyond the advanced undergraduate quantum mechanics is assumed. The book provides the first coherent introductory treatment of the path integral formulation of chiral and Weyl anomalies, with applications to gauge theory in two and four dimensions, conformal field theory and string theory. Explicitand elementary path integral calculations of most of the quantum anomalies covered are given. The conceptual basis of the path integral bosonization in two-dimensional theory, which may have applications to condensed matter theory, for example, is clarified. The book also covers the recent interesting developments in the treatment of fermions and chiral anomalies in lattice gauge theory.

Download or read book Japanese Naval Air Force Fighter Units and Their Aces 1932 1945 written by Ikuhiko Hata and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 651 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive guide to Japan’s Naval Air Force Fighter Units and their ace pilots during conflicts in the 1930s and ‘40s, now in English. The book begins by looking at the land- and aircraft carrier-based navy fighter units and their operations from 1932 to 1945, as well as their history and achievements. This is followed with biographical details for all pilots who claimed eight or more aerial victories. The thorough appendix provides detailed listings of all pilots known to have claimed five or more victories (and thus considered to be “aces”), listings of the graduation from training of all Japanese Navy fighter pilots, and of fighter pilot casualties. Photographs, maps, and artist’s side-view drawings and paintings of aircraft relevant to each of the units are also included. This revised edition is a companion volume to Japanese Army Air Force Fighter Units and Their Aces, 1931–1945.

Book excerpt: For each of the 26 sporadic finite simple groups, the authors construct a 2-completed classifying space using a homotopy decomposition in terms of classifying spaces of suitable 2-local subgroups. This construction leads to an additive decomposition of the mod 2 group cohomology.
Download or read book The Films of Akira Kurosawa Third Edition Expanded and Updated written by Donald Richie and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an epilogue provided for his incomparable study of Akira Kurosawa (1910-1998), Donald Richie reflects on Kurosawa's life work of thirty feature films and describes his last, unfinished project, a film set in the Edo period to be called The Ocean Was Watching. Kurosawa remains unchallenged as one of the century's greatest film directors. Through his long and distinguished career he managed, like very few others in the teeth of a huge and relentless industry, to elevate each of his films to a distinctive level of art. His Rashomon—one of the best-remembered and most talked-of films in any language—was a revelation when it appeared in 1950 and did much to bring Japanese cinema to the world's attention. Kurosawa's films display an extraordinary breadth and an astonishing strength, from the philosophic and sexual complexity of Rashomon to the moral dedication of Ikiru, from the naked violence of Seven Samurai to the savage comedy of Yojimbo, from the terror-filled feudalism of Throne of Blood to the piercing wit of Sanjuro.
