Book excerpt: The National Security Agency is the world’s most powerful, most far-reaching espionage. Now with a new afterword describing the security lapses that preceded the attacks of September 11, 2001, Body of Secrets takes us to the inner sanctum of America’s spy world. In the follow-up to his bestselling Puzzle Palace, James Banford reveals the NSA’s hidden role in the most volatile world events of the past, and its desperate scramble to meet the frightening challenges of today and tomorrow. Here is a scrupulously documented account—much of which is based on unprecedented access to previously undisclosed documents—of the agency’s tireless hunt for intelligence on enemies and allies alike. Book To Look Like America

Download or read book To Look Like America written by Katherine C. Naff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Look Like America is designed to contribute a unique perspective to those interested in the challenges presented to public sector organizations -- particularly in the federal sector -- by an increasingly diverse workforce. Current projections are that the American workforce will become more and more diverse over the next decade, forcing employers to respond to real or perceived barriers to the participation and advancement of women and minorities in their organizations. This book provides a means for identifying and taking steps to dismantle such barriers. It shows how empirical measures can identify the extent to which such barriers exist. The measures are applied to a broad cross-section of the federal civil service through the use of employment, focus group, and interview data, as well as responses to surveys administered to representative samples of federal employees. The analysis examines the consequences that result when barriers are left unaddressed, and concludes with an assessment of interventions that can be effective in dismantling barriers and promoting true participation.

Book Minority Representation Efforts of the Alcohol Drug Abuse and Mental Health Administration

Download or read book Minority Representation Efforts of the Alcohol Drug Abuse and Mental Health Administration written by GENERAL ACCOUNTING OFFICE WASHINGTON DC HUMAN RESOURCES DIV. and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report address concerns about the affirmative action efforts of the Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration (ADAMHA), a component of the Public Health Service (PHS) in the Department of Health anad Human Services (HHS), and whether the federal government's equal employment opportunity requirements were being complied with. We agreed to provide information on ADAMHA'S personnel management and equal employment opportunity issues regarding: the representation of minorities in its work force, especially at the management and policymaking levels; numerical goals and timetables for hiring, promoting, and reassigning minorities to fill vacancies at the management and policymaking levels; recruitment strategies and activities to increase the representation of minorities through competitive vacancy announcements; ADAMHA'S merit promotion plan and whether the plan's provisions were followed; the representation of minorities and women on its grant review committees (committee members are chosen from among qualified persons outside ADAMHA from both the private and public sectors); and plans and actions concerning the preparation of its fiscal year 1988 affirmative action plan. We found that ADAMHA was not in total compliance with EEOC affirmative action requirements and with some elements of the ADAHMA merit promotion plan, and we are making recommendations to the Secretary of HHS to correct these deficiencies.
