Book Hire on a Whim

Download or read book Hire on a Whim written by Garrett Miller and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the four nonnegotiable, nonteachable qualities that you must hire? Can you be sure, really sure, that the person you are about to hire is the one? We've all experienced that feeling of buyer's remorse when what we thought we "needed" isn't as fabulous as we thought it would be. Many managers have a similar feeling, "hire's remorse," after they extend an offer to a prospective employee and get that small but unmistakable twinge in the gut. Hiring for a new position doesn't have to be this way. Hire on a WHIM breaks down the essentials, not of whom to hire, but what to hire. What makes these four qualities essential is that no matter how great a manager you are, these are attributes you can't teach. As one expert put it, "These essentials are part of a candidate's DNA; they either have them, or they don't." So, before you make that job offer, be sure your future employee has what it takes to be hired on a WHIM. "Managers, at every level must hire the right qualities in order to field the best team. WHIM will help managers succeed in this area." Ed Breen, CEO, TYCO "With over twenty-two years of management experience at the district, regional and national level, I have been directly involved with recruiting and hiring of hundreds candidates. The successful hires all come down to the four key facets Garrett addresses." Russ Gasdia, VP of Sales and Marketing, Purdue Pharmaceuticals "Very simple, yet WHIM can have a profound positive effect on your hiring decisions. Garrett's approach addresses the non-teachable and non-negotiable personality traits that are essential for making great hires." Larry Smith, VP of Global Supply Chain, Becton Dickinson "If you want to be an amazing recruiter then read WHIM. Garrett and Dr. Thrasher's ideas are so clear, concise and easy to understand. No matter what success I'm having as a recruiter, this book will make me better." Chuck Sutton, Head of Recruiting, E&J Gallo and Sons

The book’s writing style uses almost entirely imagined conversations between a hiring manager and his guru, but Miller’s practical advice about interviewing questions and techniques provides excellent guidance. getAbstract recommends Miller’s notions mainly to managers hiring young workers, but job-hunters can also learn important lessons. The new hire will leave under less than optimal conditions, existing employees will begin to jump ship or you will be left with the unpleasant task of firing the person you just hired. Firing is probably the most painfully conclusion for all the parties involved. The ability to hire the right person for the right job is not something most managers are born being able to do. It is a learned process that could take years to perfect. Along the way it is important to use the knowledge and experience of the people that have gone before your. Read articles on the art of hiring. Find classes on communications and interviewing tips. Learn all you can to become the person that can hire and keep the right people on a consistent basis. Not only is the process of hiring a complicated and time consuming task, but it can mean the difference between tranquility and disaster in your company. Hiring the wrong person for the job can snowball into existing employees becoming unsatisfied and choosing to move on. It could result in loss of customers or clients. The wrong person can mean that you have to start the hiring process all over again (only multiplied). To avoid the hire then fire syndrome, you need to take steps to ensure the person you choose for the position is a right fit. In order to stay on target you need to be prepared, be sure to understand the position and the other people, use all the tools available to you, and understand the interview process from top to bottom. You have to be willing to invest time and money into the pre-screening process, the interview and the final evaluation. The hiring process might be expensive, but it is nothing compared to the expense of training a new employee only to have that employee quit (or to have other existing employees walk away) with little or no notice. The hiring process is an art and a science that can no be rushed. It is not something that should happen on a whim. It can take quite a bit of time and effort to prepare properly for a round of interviews. It is important that you start as early as possible so you don’t get caught in a time crunch. Rushing a decision is what leads most people into making the wrong choice. When it comes to hiring, patience and preparation are invaluable tools. There are basically ten steps that you should follow when you are in need of a new employee – either for an existing position or for one that is being created within the company. These steps are designed to help you identify the right person for the position and follow up with ways to keep the same employee for the long term.

Book excerpt: In Slaves for Hire, John J. Zaborney overturns long-standing beliefs about slave labor in the antebellum South. Previously, scholars viewed slave hiring as an aberration -- a modified form of slavery, involving primarily urban male slaves, that worked to the laborer's advantage and weakened slavery's institutional integrity. In the first in-depth examination of slave hiring in Virginia, Zaborney suggests that this endemic practice bolstered the institution of slavery in the decades leading up to the Civil War, all but assuring Virginia's secession from the Union to protect slavery. Moving beyond previous analyses, Zaborney examines slave hiring in rural and agricultural settings, along with the renting of women, children, and elderly slaves. His research reveals that, like non-hired-out slaves, these other workers' experiences varied in accordance with sex, location, occupation, economic climate, and crop prices, as well as owners' and renters' convictions and financial circumstances. Hired slaves in Virginia faced a full range of oppression from nearly full autonomy to harsh exploitation. Whites of all economic, occupational, gender, ethnic, and age groups, including slave owners and non-slave-owners, rented slaves regularly. Additionally, male owners and hirers often transported slaves to those who worked them, and acted as agents for white women who wished to hire out their slaves. Ultimately, widespread white mastery of hired slaves allowed owners with superfluous slaves to offer them for rent locally rather than selling them to the Lower South, establishing the practice as an integral feature of Virginia slavery.
