Download or read book Hiram Martin Chittenden written by Gordon B. Dodds and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Hiram Martin Chittenden illustrates the work of one of the most influential federal agencies that has shaped the American West -- the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. As a member of the Corps Chittenden was assigned to Yellowstone Park, where he completed the plan for tourist roads. His work there convinced powerful congressmen to increase greatly the appropriations for the park.In this well-researched biography, Mr. Dodds shows that Chittenden was, in addition to his Corps duties, one of the first advocates of multiple-purpose resource use, a champion of scientific accuracy in forming conservation policies, the first president of the Seattle Port Commission, and the author of several books, including his monumental History of the American Fur Trade and a guidebook to Yellowstone Park that is still in print.

Book Chardon s Journal at Fort Clark 1834 1839

Download or read book Chardon s Journal at Fort Clark 1834 1839 written by Francis A. Chardon and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years after Meriwether Lewis and William Clark passed through the Mandan villages in present-day North Dakota, the Upper Missouri River region was being plied by fur traders. In 1834 Francis A. Chardon, a Philadelphian of French extraction, took charge of Fort Clark, a main post of the American Fur Company on the Upper Missouri. The journal that Chardon began that year offers a rare glimpse of daily life among the Mandan Indians, including the Arikaras, Yanktons, and Gros Ventres. In particular, it is a valuable and graphic record of the smallpox scourge that nearly destroyed the Mandans in 1837. Chardon describes much of historical interest, including such figures as the interpreter Charbonneau, Sacajawea's husband, and the fantastic James Dickson, "Liberator of all the Indians." By the time his account ends in 1839, the fur trade is already in decline. Chardon's journal was long lost, rediscovered, and finally edited and published in 1932 by Annie Heloise Abel, a distinguished scholar whose works, all available as Bison Books, included The American Indian As Slaveholder and Secessionist; The American Indian in the Civil War, 1862-1865; and The American Indian and the End of the Confederacy, 1863-1866. Her historical introduction provides background on the fur trade and on Chardon's life before and after his tenure at Fort Clark. William R. Swagerty is a history professor at the University of Idaho.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2014 Reprint of 1935 American Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Two Volumes Bound in One. Hiram Martin Chittenden (1858-1917) was a leading historian of the American West, especially the fur trade. Epic in sweep and reach, strongly written and superbly researched, "The American Fur Trade of the Far West" is an established classic in the field of American History. Its first publication in 1902 made clear how much the fur trade was "indissolubly connected to the history of North America." Chittenden brought to this enduring work an appreciation of geography and a feeling for the lives and times of colorful trappers and mountain men like Manuel Lisa, William H. Ashley, the Sublette brothers, Jedediah Smith, Jim Bridger, and Kenneth McKenzie. He provided a comprehensive view of the fur trade that still remains sound. His history of the fur trade has been highly influential among historians of the West.
