Book excerpt: The South Shore town of Hingham, Massachusetts maintains its early village charm and entices visitors with its historic greens and scenic harbor. Landing in Bar Cove, the earliest settlers brought inspiration for their new home from its English namesake, and the young village prospered and grew into an influential coastal community. Discover the Old Ship Meetinghouse that is the oldest continually in operation, the story of President Abraham Lincoln's ancestor who facilitated the British surrender at Yorktown, and the teaming coastal waters that have drawn generations of fishermen. Ted Clarke, one of Boston's most prolific authors of local history, deftly chronicles four hundred years of Hingham's unique past.

Book A Guide to Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Hingham

Download or read book A Guide to Seventeenth and Eighteenth Century Hingham written by Stephen Dempsey and published by America Through Time. This book was released on 2017-08-28 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hingham is one of the oldest towns in America (settled 1633). The towns' primary resource that underlies the environmental excellence is its distinctive, contiguous, wood-frame architectural resource is an aesthetic, cultural and economic resource that is also a national heritage. During each year many questions are posed to me regarding Hingham's natural and historic resources. Without question, the most sought after information is for a history of the town's old buildings. Invariably I am asked, 'Where is and how old is the oldest house in Hingham?' Unfortunately, the oldest house is not yet known. There are no comprehensive records. Hingham's pioneers were too fully occupied in clearing the land for planting and grazing fields, building stone fences and in other pursuits necessary for survival in a new land to record the date on which their house, barn, or saw mill frame was raised. Many of them could not write further than to put their mark on official documents. How then could they know that every swing of the axe and hammer was paving the way toward that day when the 'shot heard round the world' would give birth to the American Republic?"

Book Metropolitan Corridor

Book excerpt: An engaging and delightfully illustrated account of the impact of railroads on the American built environment and on American culture from the last decades of the nineteenth century to the 1930s. "One of the most important [books] of the season, a wonderful piece of social history."--Ivan R. Dee, Chicago Tribune "Stilgoe ransacks magazines, ads, novels, poems, to create what is really 10 books crammed into one, dense with vivid fact and alluring conjecture. The chapter on trolleys alone is worth the price of the book. So is the one entitled 'Cinema.' A classic-to-be."--Robert Campbell, Boston Sunday Globe "An impressive new study.... Here in wonderful detail are the trains and the built environment adjacent to the right-of-way they traveled.... A stunning spatial analysis of the transformations wrought by the railroads."--Delores Greenberg, The New York Times Book Review "A honey of a book: scholarly, joyous, absorbing in its detail, often arresting in its insights... and packed with vintage photos and drawings."--Kirkus Reviews "An original, engaging, instructive, and wonderfully evocative book."--Leo Marx, The New York Review of Books "Whether we are enthusiasts, scholars, buffs, commuters, or Amtrak riders, Stilgoe offers us a new way to look at railroads and railroading."--Keith L. Bryant, Jr., Railroad History.

(6) Columns for Discount on Purchases and Discount on Notes on the same side of the Cash Book; (c) Columns for Discount on Sales and Cash Sales on the debit side of the Cash Book; (d) Departmental columns in the Sales Book and in the Purchase Book. Controlling Accounts.--The addition of special columns in books of original entry makes possible the keeping of Controlling Accounts. The most common examples of such accounts are Accounts Receivable account and Accounts Payable account. These summary accounts, respectively, displace individual customers' and creditors' accounts in the Ledger. The customers' accounts are then segregated in another book called the Sales Ledger or Customers' Ledger, while the creditors' accounts are kept in the Purchase or Creditors' Ledger. The original Ledger, now much reduced in size, is called the General Ledger. The Trial Balance now refers to the accounts in the General Ledger. It is evident that the task of taking a Trial Balance is greatly simplified because so many fewer accounts are involved. A Schedule of Accounts Receivable is then prepared, consisting of the balances found in the Sales Ledger, and its total must agree with the balance of the Accounts Receivable account shown in the Trial Balance. A similar Schedule of Accounts Payable, made up of all the balances in the Purchase Ledger, is prepared, and it must agree with the balance of the Accounts Payable account of the General Ledger." The Balance Sheet.--In the more elementary part of the text, the student learned how to prepare a Statement of Assets and Liabilities for the purpose of disclosing the net capital of an enterprise. In the present chapter he was shown how to prepare a similar statement, the Balance Sheet. For all practical...

John Gallagher has given historical fiction fans another richly satisfying, complicated, and well-researched story. Bravo! Annie Hartnett, author of Rabbit CakePassion, Poison, and Pretense: The Murder of Hingham's Postmaster is the type of local history story I have been craving for some time -a concise, engaging, true story of one of the earliest and most well documented murder cases in Massachusetts, right here in our backyard. Filled with wonderful detail, John's book touches not only on this fascinating piece of Hingham history but also how it fits into the broader history of the development of the judicial system in the fledgling United States. I couldn't put it down! Michael Achille, Collections Manager, Hingham Historical Society
