Book The Cot in the Living Room

Download or read book The Cot in the Living Room written by Hilda Eunice Burgos and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A young Dominican American girl in New York City moves from jealousy to empathy as her parents babysit children whose families work overnight shifts in this honest and warm picture book debut. Night after night, a young girl watches her mami set up a cot in the living room for guests in their Washington Heights apartment, like Raquel (who's boring) and Edgardo (who gets crumbs everywhere). She resents that they get the entire living room with a view of the George Washington Bridge, while all she gets is a tiny bedroom with a view of her sister (who snores). Until one night when no one comes, and it's finally her chance! But as it turns out, sleeping on the cot in the living room isn't all she thought it would be. With charming text by Hilda Eunice Burgos and whimsical illustrations by Gaby D'Alessandro, The Cot in the Living Room is a celebration of the ways a Dominican American community takes care of one another while showing young readers that sometimes the best way to be a better neighbor is by imagining how it feels to spend a night sleeping on someone else's pillow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hilda Raz has long been a significant voice for American poetry. She writes of widows dancing and of squirrels fat in late September, of the power of a woman's voice, solitary, "blessed to be the womb put to use or not." Raz brings to her poetry and all the things it may encompass an authority wrought of compassion, of awareness and hard-won wisdom. She writes, "I bent over the mess, began to gather it up" and this is an apt description for how a life might be crafted into poetry. She knows where poetry comes from, as Yeats did in his "foul rag and bone shop," that "I'm not afraid anymore. / How heavy you were on my body. / How burnt I was from exposure." The reader will remember the triumphs and heartbreaks, where "I lean on rituals of the house. / Is it possible to live forever in silence?" and where a mother, dreaming, . . . sits in the rocking chair. From the shut closet, a cry. In the closet, wrapped in a snowsuit, under the zipper, one of the twins she gave birth to, this child in her arms. One twin died, she remembers, but this one is alive and mewing, a swollen belly, a perfect little head, a face. She'd forgotten him. No. I can fix everything.

Book excerpt: IT is not many years ago that the evening train from London brought to Snoreton a certain traveller of insignificant appearance. The trains on this Great Southern line are slow; the weather during the whole of this particular April day had been unusually cold, and the traveller, under the influence of these and other hardships, had by this time sunk into the state of torpor which must be sufficiently familiar to all our readers who have ever passed under the same conditions a period of ten hours. On arriving at Brewington, which his Bradshaw showed to be the station immediately next to Snoreton, he roused himself, and, after a good stretch, betook himself to the open window of his compartment, out of which he continued to gaze with the greatest interest at the features of the landscape while the train sped on, and in spite of the keen breeze. These two places or towns are connected by a straight piece of line, and in approaching Snoreton on this side you observe that it lies at the bottom of a valley, at the central point of which the houses cluster thickly together, gradually rising on either side, and thinning off skywards. Something about this aspect speaks to you of warmth (perhaps the red-tiled roofs), peace and homeliness, an impression strengthened by the light purple haze generally floating over all. Our stranger noted all these signs, while the train gradually slackened speed, and finally stopped to the tune of squeaking and jarring breaks at the terminus. Here an unpleasant every-day reality put his dreams to flight--the scarcity of railway porters. The crowd melted rapidly away, however, leaving him alone on the platform; in which situation he at length attracted the notice of the only official present, who advanced to his assistance in reply to his call.

Book Hilda Hurricane

  • Author : Roberto Drummond
  • Publisher : University of Texas Press
  • Release : 2011-07-15
  • ISBN : 0292774303
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book Hilda Hurricane written by Roberto Drummond and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2011-07-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteen-year-old Hilda, known as "the girl in the gold bikini" when she swam at her country club in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, abruptly leaves the gilded life to take up residence in room 304 of the Hotel Marvelous—as a prostitute. There she becomes Hilda Hurricane, an erotic force of nature no man can resist. The exception is reporter-narrator Roberto Drummond, who attempts to unravel the mystery of why the girl in the gold bikini would forego a comfortable life to join the world's oldest profession. While some in Belo Horizonte cheer Hilda's liberated lifestyle, others seek to have her moved outside the city limits, and a would-be saint cannot seem to finish the exorcism he began outside the Hotel Marvelous. Set against the social and political upheaval of the 1960s, Hilda's story seduces even as Drummond becomes aware of more ominous forces approaching Belo Horizonte. Hilda Hurricane was both a critical and a commercial success in Brazil, with more than 200,000 copies sold. (The DVD of the television adaptation has sold more than a million copies.) Admirers of Kurt Vonnegut will revel in Drummond's similarly sharp satire and playful digressions, particularly about left-wing politics, which blur the boundary between fiction and autobiography. Yet the real genius of the author's interventions may be that they never slow the story long enough to lose sight of this mysterious beauty swept up in the turmoil of the times.

Download or read book The Obscene Madame D written by Hilda Hilst and published by Steerforth Press. This book was released on 2025-05-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wickedly funny work of depraved genius by one of Brazil’s most radical twentieth-century writers; imagine the Marquis de Sade as written by Clarice Lespecter An electrifying masterpiece by one of modern Brazilian literature’s most significant and controversial writers, Hilda Hilst takes us into the disorder and beauty of a mind restlessly testing its own limits. Every month I ingested the body of God, not in the way one swallows green peas or agrostis, or swallows swords, I ingested the body of God the way people do when they know they are swallowing the More, the All, the Incommensurable, for not believing in finitude I would lose myself in absolute infinity… The Obscene Madame D tells the story of Hillé, a sixty-year-old woman who has decided to abandon conventional life and spend the rest of her days in contemplation in a recess under the stairs. There, she is haunted by the perplexity of her recently deceased lover, Ehud, who cannot understand her rejection of common sense, sex and a simple life in favour of metaphysical speculations that he considers delusional and vain. In a stream-of-consciousness monologue that’s part James Joyce, part Clarice Lispector, and part de Sade, Hillé speaks of her search for spiritual fulfilment from a space of dereliction, as she searches for answers to great questions of life, death and the relationship between body and soul.
