Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kris Ellis’ debut novel follows Matt Pearce, OCD sufferer, low-achiever, film fanatic and Jack Kerouac enthusiast, who reaches an existential crossroads. He finds himself looking back on a life thus far of dead-end jobs, binge drinking, encounters with aggressive locals, sessions with therapists, and failed relationships with alluring but ‘head-doing’ young teenage girls. When one of these relationships, with an abused teenager called S., goes badly wrong, Matt flees the country and undertakes a Greyhound bus journey across the USA, partly to escape from S., partly as a pilgrimage to Kerouac’s final resting place, partly to pitch his draft indie movie script to an unsuspecting Hollywood, but mostly to find himself. Matt's journey takes him from New York to Los Angeles via stopovers in Boston, Lowell, Chicago and Las Vegas. He travels across a variegated geographical and mental landscape which provides him with edgy encounters and glimpses of an existential NOW amidst flashbacks from his childhood, adolescence in Freetown, formative relationships with Mona, Alice and S., Socratic dialogues with his ‘head doctor’, movie-making ambitions and struggling attempts to write his own life script. temporoparietal is a candid, semi-documentary teenage beat novel, told through the hand-held camera-pen of its young adult narrator. The story is written in an experimental colloquial style resembling a philosophical, vigorously delivered stand-up comedy routine about being alive and young in the modern world. Author Kris Ellis describes his protagonist’s state of consciousness as existing somewhere between Holden Caulfield and Bill Hicks. Influenced by J.D. Salinger, Jack Kerouac and Michel Houellebecq, temporoparietal will appeal to readers looking for an edgy, thought-provoking contemporary novel exploring modern youth in search of its soul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working in cities from Liverpool and Glasgow to Paris and New York, the interventionist artist transforms ordinary urban spaces, disrupting everyday life in ways that reinvent the way we encounter and experience art and compelling people to act and think differently about the world around them. Providing incisive new insights into the work and life of the artist,Cultural Hijack examines how these artists use the city as a playground, a stage, or an instrument for unsanctioned artworks, informal creative practices, activist interventions, and political actions. Drawing on a series of essays, personal testimonies, and original interviews from artists such as Tatsuro Bashi, BGL, Gelitin, Michael Rakowitz, and Krzysztof Wodiczko, this illuminating work enlarges our understanding of the creative process and how artists are developing new weapons in the arsenal of critical resistance, both emancipating and expanding the spaces of artistic and cultural production.

Book Postcolonial African Cities

Download or read book Postcolonial African Cities written by Fassil Demissie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book focuses on contemporary African cities, caught in the contradiction of an imperial past and postcolonial present. The essays explore the cultural role of colonial architecture and urbanism in the production of meanings: in the inscription of power and discipline, as well as in the dynamic construction of identities. It is in these new dense urban spaces, with all their contradictions, that urban Africans are reworking their local identities, building families, and creating autonomous communities – made fragile by neo-liberal states in a globalizing world. The book offers a range of scholarly interpretations of the new forms of urbanity. It engages with issues, themes and topics including colonial legacies, postcolonial intersections, cosmopolitan spaces, urban reconfigurations, and migration which are at the heart of the continuing debate about the trajectory of contemporary African cities. The collection discusses contemporary African cities as diverse as Dar Es Salaam, Dakar, Johannesburg, Lagos and Kinshasa – offering new insights into the current state of postcolonial African cities. This was previously published as a special issue of African Identities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first four volumes of Hijacked!, How Dr. King’s Dream Became a Nightmare explores the goals that must be achieved and the methods that must be used to fix what is wrong with America. However, these things have been hijacked by super natural spiritual forces and caused the once unthinkable devastating nightmare in America, which we are now experiencing. This Nightmare has been orchestrated by spiritually dark forces who must be dealt with through an effective, super natural, spiritual warfare prayer strategy. Nothing else—but this—will solve the demonic insanity that is occurring all over America today! In Volume 5, The Demonic, everything that “We the People” need to do this and bring America back from the brink of total decline and destruction is explored in detail. The demonic insanity that is so widespread in America today is clearly demonstrated by such things as critical race theory, social justice, transgenderism, the open-boarder policy, the war-on-fossil-fuel/the climate-control policy, an obsession with renewing the JCPOA Iran nuclear argument, the love affair of African-Americans with the people that clearly hate them, and the love affair of Jewish-Americans and others with the people that clearly hate them. The volumes respectively of Hijacked! are The Dream, The Hijack, The Nightmare, The Recovery, and The Demonic. All of these things are a very clear demonstration that most Americans have rejected the God-given dream goals and dream methods of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and are instead being taught how to live by demons.

Book Building Jerusalem

  • Author : Tristram Hunt
  • Publisher : Metropolitan Books
  • Release : 2006-12-26

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Manchester's deadly cotton works to London's literary salons, a brilliant exploration of how the Victorians created the modern city Since Charles Dickens first described Coketown in Hard Times, the nineteenth-century city, born of the industrial revolution, has been a byword for deprivation, pollution, and criminality. Yet, as historian Tristram Hunt argues in this powerful new history, the Coketowns of the 1800s were far more than a monstrous landscape of factories and tenements. By 1851, more than half of Britain's population lived in cities, and even as these pioneers confronted a frightening new way of life, they produced an urban flowering that would influence the shape of cities for generations to come. Drawing on diaries, newspapers, and classic works of fiction, Hunt shows how the Victorians translated their energy and ambition into realizing an astonishingly grand vision of the utopian city on a hill—the new Jerusalem. He surveys the great civic creations, from town halls to city squares, sidewalks, and even sewers, to reveal a story of middle-class power and prosperity and the liberating mission of city life. Vowing to emulate the city-states of Renaissance Italy, the Victorians worked to turn even the smokestacks of Manchester and Birmingham into sites of freedom and art. And they succeeded—until twentieth-century decline transformed wealthy metropolises into dangerous inner cities. An original history of proud cities and confident citizens, Building Jerusalem depicts an unrivaled era that produced one of the great urban civilizations of Western history.
