Book Highways and Byways in the Border Classic Reprint

Download or read book Highways and Byways in the Border Classic Reprint written by Andrew Lang and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways and Byways in the Border In preparing a second edition of "Highways and Byways in The Border," I cannot refrain from acknowledging with deep appreciation the very great compliment that has been paid to me by the many kindly critics who, when reviewing the book, selected for commendation, as being "characteristically Andrew Lang," passages of which at least ninety per cent, were not written till many months after my brother's death, and none of which he ever saw. On the other hand, a certain number of sentences that came from his pen have been ascribed to me. As a matter of fact, something less than one-tenth of the book is by my brother, and we never had the opportunity of going over together the little that was written prior to his death; nor did he ever see any of the MS. except that portion which came from his own pen. I have been taken to task for careless spelling of the surname Elliot. It is not always easy to say to which branch of the great Border clan a particular individual may belong; but if one may judge from the familiar old rhyme, I do not think I have gone greatly astray. Its ordinary version runs: " Double L and single T, Elliots of Min to and Wolflee. Double T and single L, The Eliotts they in Stobs that dwell Single L and single T, Eliots of St. Germains be. But double L and double T, The de'il may ken wha they may be." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beyond the Border And they soon got hold of it, for the blacksmith was so pleased with his wit he did not care to keep it to himself, but wanted to take the credit. And his neighbours came out laughing as if their sides would split, till the Streets re-echoed with shouts of amuse ment. Oh, that joke was certainly very good indeed! And the butcher told it to the baker, and the baker to the grocer, and the grocer to somebody else, and somebody else to the other person, and they all told their customers - I mean, of course, those who had customers - and everybody laughed again at each repetition of the joke till they felt so dry in the mouth that they had to go to the inn to refresh, where they drank cups of liquor, and told the inn keeper all about it between the draughts. And the innkeeper laughed, and his wife laughed, and the lass laughed, and they had to hold on to each other, so faint were they with laughter. Download or read book Highways and Byways in North Wales Classic Reprint written by A. G. Bradley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways and Byways in North Wales The famous Doctor Kennedy, of whom I shall speak anon, took this matter, I believe, greatly to heart. When at'a Cam bridge dinner-party, or in polite society elsewhere outside the Scene of his scholastic triumphs, I have heard that his eye flashed on any such offender with a ferocity almost as great as that with which it blazed at the sound of a false quantity. He could neither birch nor expel, nor set five hundred lines to his 01's d vi: at a dinner-party, it is true; but I have been informed by people who ought to know that he never failed greatly to im prove the occasion and to leave one outsider, at any rate, with an undying impression of the right method of pronouncing the name of Salop's ancient capital. Chester, I am quite aware, considers itself immeasurably ahead of Shrewsbury in the attractions it Offers to the tourist, and, as everybody knows, draws a great stream of sightseers, particularly Americans; while few people, I fancy, go much out of their way to visit the old Shropshire town. I hope it is not from any unworthy resentment at what seem to me the somewhat over-weening pretensions of Chester, that I am introducing the reader to Wales by way of Shrewsbury and the Shropshire border. I Sincerely believe there are good reasons for this, and not the least of them the fact that Shrews bury, unlike Chester, is little known, and has nothing like the outside reputation it deserves, and if by a brief glance at it I may haply induce a few travellers, who would otherwise pass by.
