Book excerpt: Westerns may have had their heyday, but they remain popular. The greatest films from 1914, when The Squaw Man and The Virginian were among the genre's best, through 2001, when American Outlaws and Texas Rangers were tops, are the subject of this work. For each year, the author names the outstanding western films in the following categories: picture, screenplay (original and adaptation), direction, cinematography, music, male and female leading roles, and male and female supporting roles. Also for each year, the author lists the westerns that received Academy Award nominations (and those that won), makes note of the births and deaths of notable actors, directors, producers, composers, cinematographers, authors and other such personalities, and describes the genre's significant achievements.

Book The Light of Grace John Owen on the Authority of Scripture and Christian Faith

Download or read book The Light of Grace John Owen on the Authority of Scripture and Christian Faith written by Andrew M. Leslie and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2015-08-19 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several centuries, John Owen's writings on scripture have captured the attention of numerous interpreters across a relatively diverse range of disciplines. His own distinctive contribution to this doctrine was forged with a genuine fear for the on-going pre-eminence of scriptural authority in the English church firmly in view. In the face of various rival perspectives, Owen insists every Christian believer ought to be clear on the reason they believe scripture to be the word of God. Focussing on the treatise Reason of Faith (1677) in conversation with his wider theological corpus, Andrew M. Leslie studies Owen's approach to scriptural authority and Christian faith. He argues that Owen creatively drew upon an ecumenical dogmatic and metaphysical heritage to restate and refine the traditional Reformed position on scripture's divine authority, sensitive to developments in his own late seventeenth-century context. In particular, Leslie explores how Owen shares a growing concern to ground Christian faith in objective evidence, all-the-while ensuring that its ultimate foundation lies in the irresistible authority and truthfulness of God, mediated "in and by" the inspired text of scripture. Leslie also draws out the broader significance Owen ascribes to scripture in shaping a believer's relationship with the Triune God, especially its vital role in their gradual transformation into the likeness or image of Christ.

Book On the Heels of Ignorance

Download or read book On the Heels of Ignorance written by Owen Whooley and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2019-04-23 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychiatry has always aimed to peer deep into the human mind, daring to cast light on its darkest corners and untangle its thorniest knots, often invoking the latest medical science in doing so. But, as Owen Whooley’s sweeping new book tells us, the history of American psychiatry is really a record of ignorance. On the Heels of Ignorance begins with psychiatry’s formal inception in the 1840s and moves through two centuries of constant struggle simply to define and redefine mental illness, to say nothing of the best way to treat it. Whooley’s book is no antipsychiatric screed, however; instead, he reveals a field that has muddled through periodic reinventions and conflicting agendas of curiosity, compassion, and professional striving. On the Heels of Ignorance draws from intellectual history and the sociology of professions to portray an ongoing human effort to make sense of complex mental phenomena using an imperfect set of tools, with sometimes tragic results.

Book Good News for the Broken Self

Download or read book Good News for the Broken Self written by Joseph S. Arnold LPCC BCC and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2019-10-04 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are all traveling on a journey through this life. It seems that at times, we will face some difficult situations and circumstances that leave us wounded and sometimes disillusioned. We tell ourselves we just need to get over it and get on with life, but in all honesty, how well are we really doing this? Joe shares his own story of how normal aspects of temperament play a role in how we experience these wounds, along with how he has experienced substantial healing from various aspects of his own brokenness. He both ponders and presents his belief that the healing of our brokenness has been minimized and overlooked by large segments of the contemporary church. A thread of his own experience of grace is interwoven throughout the book. He presents some “whole person” ideas of how we can all move toward a path of greater healing and a truer version of ourselves. Joe invites you on a journey with him to more fully explore this possibility. Here’s an opportunity to walk through a door of hope to see if a deeper level of healing is available to you and those you care for.
