Book High Velocity Formability and Factors Affecting it

Download or read book High Velocity Formability and Factors Affecting it written by Mala Seth Dehra and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: High velocity forming methods successfully address problems faced in conventional forming techniques. They can be effectively used for forming metals with low formability like aluminum alloys and high strength steel. They can be instrumental is manufacturing of lighter vehicles with higher fuel efficiency. Electromagnetic forming (EMF) is an HVF method that is gaining wide acceptance due to its advantages and scope for commercialization. A number of experimental studies were carried out with EMF with the main goal of exploring fundamentals about material formability at high velocities, which can be used to establish practical design guidelines and to make models of high velocity formability. Thus the main factors that influence high velocity formability -- inertia / size effects; changes in constitutive behavior; impact; and dynamic failure modes, were studied mainly with experiments. The role of changes in constitutive behavior in improving formability was studied from existing studies and new theoretical studies involving High velocity Forming Limit Diagram (FLD) and through solving an inverse problem of ring expansion. Tube free-expansion experiments were carried out to demonstrate enhanced metal formability even in the absence of die impact. To further establish the significance of inertia, electromagnetic ring free-expansion experiments with rings of different aspect ratios were carried out. The results clearly demonstrated the influence of sample aspect ratio (dimensions) and hence inertia on high velocity formability. Die impact experiments were carried out with tubes and rings to show the beneficial influence of die arrest of a moving sample. It was revealed that die impact in an appropriate range of velocities can significantly suppress failure and reduce the number of tears and fractures in the samples. Further a new mode of failure in die impacted samples, spall-like dynamic rupture was observed, which had characteristics similar to classic spall failure. Thus through all these studies, the important factors influencing high velocity formability was studied and it was shown that it can be more complex than quasi-static formability. Boundary conditions for each forming operation can play a more significant role and hence simple tools like FLDs might not be practical tools for studying high velocity formability.

Book Simulation of Manufacturing Sequences of Functionally Graded Structures

Download or read book Simulation of Manufacturing Sequences of Functionally Graded Structures written by Gleim, Tobias and published by kassel university press GmbH. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current paper establishes an axisymmetric model for an inductive heating process. Therein, the fully coupled MAXWELL equations, assuming a temperature dependent permeability, are combined with the non-linear heat conduction equation to yield a monolithic solution strategy. The latter is based on a consistent linearization together with a higher order finite element discretization using GALERKIN'S method in space. For the temporal discretization, the generalized Newmark-? methods, higher order RUNGE-KUTTA methods, and discontinuous and continuous GALERKIN methods are used. Furthermore, the residual error is introduced to open an alternative way to obtain a numerically efficient estimation of the time integration accuracy. Simulation results of the electric, magnetic and thermal fields are provided, together with parameter studies concerning spatial discretization, frequency dependence and penetration depth of the heating zone. Another topic analyzed is the residual error and its estimation quality regarding polynomial degree and time step size. A further aspect of this work is the investigation of the thermal fluid-structure interaction with respect to functionally graded materials. Different coupling strategies for the acceleration of the fixed-point iteration in each time step is in the foreground. Relaxation methods as well as extrapolation methods make it possible to significantly reduce the number of fixed point iterations. At the same time, an adaptive strategy with higher order RUNGE-KUTTA methods can provide a further advantage in combination with acceleration methods.

Book Modelling and Simulation of Sheet Metal Forming Processes

Download or read book Modelling and Simulation of Sheet Metal Forming Processes written by Marta C. Oliveira and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-04-22 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerical simulation of sheet metal forming processes has become an indispensable tool for the design of components and their forming processes. This role was attained due to the huge impact in reducing time to market and the cost of developing new components in industries ranging from automotive to packing, as well as enabling an improved understanding of the deformation mechanisms and their interaction with process parameters. Despite being a consolidated tool, its potential for application continues to be discovered with the continuous need to simulate more complex processes, including the integration of the various processes involved in the production of a sheet metal component and the analysis of in-service behavior. The quest for more robust and sustainable processes has also changed its deterministic character into stochastic to be able to consider the scatter in mechanical properties induced by previous manufacturing processes. Faced with these challenges, this Special Issue presents scientific advances in the development of numerical tools that improve the prediction results for conventional forming process, enable the development of new forming processes, or contribute to the integration of several manufacturing processes, highlighting the growing multidisciplinary characteristic of this field.

Book Metal Deformation Processing

Download or read book Metal Deformation Processing written by F. W. Boulger and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the Metalworking Process and Equipment Program, a survey was conducted to collect and summarize information on deformation characteristics of metals and their effect on processing operations. This report presents information obtained from reports on Governmentsponsored work and from articles in technical publications. The report covers eight subjects: extrusion, forging, rolling, thermal mechanical variables affecting the properties of refractory metals and alloys, development of preferred orientations, anisotropy of strength and ductility, high-strain-rate deformation, and strain aging. In order to be useful to engineering students and production engineers the topics are treated in two ways. Generalized discussions of common processes point out why specific variables must be modified in order to deform certain types of metals satisfactorily. When practical, data on the more-difficultto-form metals are used to illustrate the principles, limitations, and effects of the processes. The objective is to help the non-specialist recognize the implications of specific findings and to apply them to specific operations. (Author).

Book The Kiloparsec Scale Structure and Kinematics of High Redshift Star Forming Galaxies

Download or read book The Kiloparsec Scale Structure and Kinematics of High Redshift Star Forming Galaxies written by David R. Law and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the spatially resolved properties of star-forming galaxies at redshift z 2 - 3 on scales 1 kpc using a combination of morphological and kinematic analyses in an effort to characterize the major mechanisms of galaxy formation in the young universe. Using a sample of 216 galaxies which have been spectroscopically confirmed to lie between redshifts z = 1.8 - 3.4 in the GOODS-N field we demonstrate that rest-UV morphology (as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope) is statistically uncorrelated with physical properties such as star formation rate and is therefore unable to support the hypothesis that the prevalence of irregular morphologies indicates a high major merger fraction. Further, we present a sample of 13 galaxies observed with the OSIRIS integral field spectrograph and the Keck laser-guide star adaptive optics system which demonstrate the prevalence of high velocity dispersions 80 km/s and generally little in the way of spatially resolved velocity gradients, inconsistent with favored rotating disk models. We discuss the implications of these results for galaxy formation models, including gas accretion via cold flows and gravitational instability of early gas-rich galactic disks. There is some evidence for a trend towards stronger rotational signatures in galaxies with more massive stellar populations.
