Book High Temperature Fatigue

Download or read book High Temperature Fatigue written by R.P. Skelton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 35 years ago, thermal fatigue was identified as an important phenomenon which limited the lifetime of high temperature plant. In the intervening years many investigations have been carried out, primarily to give guidance on likely endurance (especially in the presence of time dependent deformation) but latterly, with the introduction of sophisticated testing machines, to provide knowledge of the underlying mechanisms of failure. A previous edited book (Fatigue at High Temperature, Elsevier Applied Science Publishers, 1983) summarised the state-of-the-art of high temperature fatigue testing and examined the factors influencing life, such as stress state, environment and microstructural effects. It also considered, in some detail, cyclic crack growth as a more rigorous approach to life limitation. The aim of the present volume (which in style and format follows exactly the same lines as its predecessor) is once again to pursue the desire to translate detailed laboratory knowledge into engineering design and assessment. There is, for example, a need to consider the limitations of the laboratory specimen and its relationship with engineering features. Many design procedures still rely on a simple endurance approach based on failure of a smooth specimen, and this is taken to indicate crack initiation in the component. In this volume, therefore, crack propagation is covered only incidentally, emphasis being placed instead on basic cyclic stress strain properties, non-isothermal behaviour, metallography, failure criteria and the need for agreed testing procedures.

Book High Temperature Low Cycle Fatigue Data for Three High Strength Nickel Base Superalloys

Download or read book High Temperature Low Cycle Fatigue Data for Three High Strength Nickel Base Superalloys written by J. B. Conway and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a summary of the high temperature low cycle fatigue data for three high strength nickel-base superalloys, Rene 95, AF-115, and AF2-1DA. The majority of tests were performed in strain control at 1200 F and 1400 F, and at frequencies of 20 cpm, 0.2 cpm, and 0.05 cpm. Conventional triangular waveform was used for most of the testing although strain dwell tests and some SLOW-FAST and FAST-SLOW tests were also included. (author).

Book High Temperature Monotonic and Cyclic Deformation in a Directionally Solidified Nickel Base Superalloy

Download or read book High Temperature Monotonic and Cyclic Deformation in a Directionally Solidified Nickel Base Superalloy written by Eric S. Huron and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directionally solidified (Ds) MAR-M246+Hf was tested in tension and fatigue, at temperatures from 20 C - 1093 C. Tests were performed on (001) oriented specimens at strain rates of 50 % and 0.5 % per minutes. In tension, the yield strength was constant up to 704 C, above which the strength dropped off rapidly. A strong dependence of strength on strain rate was seen at the higher temperatures. The deformation mode was observed to change from heterogeneous to homogeneous with increasing temperature. Low Cycle Fatigue tests were done using a fully reversed waveform and total strain control. for a given plastic strain range, lives increased with increasing temperature. For a given temperature strain rate had a strong effect on life. At 704 C, decreasing strain rates decreased life, while at the higher temperatures, decreasing strain rates increased life, for a given plastic strain range. These results could be explained through considerations of the deformation modes and stress levels. At the higher temperatures, marked coarsening caused beneficial stress reductions, but oxidation limited the life. The longitudinal grain boundaries were found to influence slip behavior. The degree of secondary slip adjacent to the boundaries was found to be related to the degree of misorientation between the grains.

Book Influence of High Frequency Vibrations on the Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior of a Superalloy at Elevated Temperature

Download or read book Influence of High Frequency Vibrations on the Low Cycle Fatigue Behavior of a Superalloy at Elevated Temperature written by Ouyang J and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of relatively high-frequency, low-amplitude vibrations on the low-cycle fatigue (LCF) behavior and its fractographic feature for a GH36 Fe-Ni alloy at 600°C is studied. It is found that the influence is rather complicated and significant. The nature and extent of the influence depended upon the ratio of the amplitude of high-cycle to low-cycle stress range, Q. As Q approaches Qc (the critical value of Q), there is no appreciable influence on the total LCF life; as Q Qc, it will prolong the lifetime slightly; and as Q Qc, the fatigue life will decrease progressively. The variation of fatigue life was ascribed to the occurrence of some considerable interactions between creep, high-cycle fatigue (HCF), LCF, and environmental effect under different values of Q at elevated temperature, and the change of damage mechanism of the material. The total LCF life, especially crack propagation life, will be markedly reduced by the high-cycle vibrations when Q is much greater than Qc. Meanwhile, the mixed failure of creep, HCF, LCF, and environmental attack will gradually change into combined cycle fatigue failure with increasing Q. The fractographic analysis is in agreement with these results.

Book Elevated Temperature Low Cycle Fatigue of Nickel Base Superalloys in the Conventionally Cast Directionally Solidified and Single Crystal Forms

Download or read book Elevated Temperature Low Cycle Fatigue of Nickel Base Superalloys in the Conventionally Cast Directionally Solidified and Single Crystal Forms written by Stephen D. Antolovich and published by . This book was released on 1983* with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High temperature low cycle fatigue (LCF) has been studied for directionally solidified (DS) and conventionally cast (CC) Rene' 80. For the conventionally cast material testing was carried out on smooth bars over the temperature range 75 F (24 C) to 1800 F (982 C). It was found that at low temperatures slip was planar and carbides acted as crack initiation sites. In correspondence with the importance of carbides on the fatigue life it was found that life cosrrelated best with total strain range (as opposed to plastic strain range).

Book A Model for Life Predictions of Nickel Base Superalloys in High Temperature Low Cycle Fatigue

Download or read book A Model for Life Predictions of Nickel Base Superalloys in High Temperature Low Cycle Fatigue written by SD. Antolovich and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extensive characterization of low-cycle fatigue damage mechanisms was performed on polycrystalline René 80 and IN100 tested in the temperature range from 871 to 1000°C. Low-cycle fatigue life was found to be dominated by propagation of microcracks to a critical size governed by the maximum tensile stress. A model was developed which incorporates a threshold stress for crack extension, a stress-based crack growth expression, and a failure criterion. The mathematical equivalence between this mechanistically based model and the strain-life low-cycle fatigue law was demonstrated using cyclic stress-strain relationships. The model was shown to correlate the high-temperature low-cycle fatigue data of the different nickel-base superalloys considered in this study.
