Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Course in Latin Composition The aim of this book is to provide a complete course in writing Latin for school use. The book consists of three parts arranged for practice in writing Latin during the last three years of school, and, in addition, a summary of the Elements of Syntax for reference. Treatment. - In the lessons syntax is treated systematically by topics. For content and vocabulary the exercises are based on Caesar's Commentaries and on the Orations of Cicero which are usually read in our schools. Summary of the Elements of Syntax. - The first portion of the book consists of a summary of the Elements of Syntax. This summary contains a statement and explanation of those principles of syntax which are essential for writing Latin in the school, so that in the lessons direct reference may be made to this summary instead of to the confusing mass of information given in the large grammars. References to the grammars are given, however, so that, if desired, they may be used instead of, or in addition to, those given in the summary. The illustrative examples are, for the most part, taken from Caesar or Cicero, that the student may the more easily interpret them. Part I. - Part I consists of a series of twenty-eight lessons based for content and vocabulary on Caesar's Commentaries, Books I - IV. Book Advanced Latin Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book Advanced Latin Composition Classic Reprint written by H. C. Nutting and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Advanced Latin Composition This book is divided into three parts, each of which provides material for a one-hour course throughout the year. The exercises are based upon outlying parts of Caesar and Cicero, unfamiliar to students in the earlier part of their college course. Parts I and II are designed specially for freshman work. They both cover practically the same ground, thus making it possible to use the book in successive years without employing the same exercise twice. In preparing the passages for translation into Latin two ends have been kept in view: first, to test the student's knowledge of forms and syntax at the places where data collected from the work of successive classes has shown the freshman student to be weak; and, second, to illustrate a few of the finer points of composition which cannot be adequately treated in the preparatory school. This latter feature renders the footnotes necessarily rather bulky. The exercises are arranged in a careful sequence, and should be used in the order in which they stand to secure the most satisfactory results. Part III provides suitable work for students who have completed either Part I or Part II. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Teachers Course in Latin Composition Classic Reprint written by Herbert C. Nutting and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teachers Course in Latin Composition It has been the writer's privilege to teach all grades of Latin composition in college for a period of about twenty years. His first experience was with a freshman class so huge that it required divi sion into four sections of about thirty students each. Happily for the raw instructor, the reader appointed to assist him proved to be a man of untiring indus try, who willingly compiled and presented weekly a list of the mistakes most commonly made. These lists were filed away at the time without full appreciation of their real value. It was only when subsequent classes developed very similar lists of common mistakes that it was borne in upon the writer that he was dealing with liability to error that could be very accurately defined. Book Latin Composition Vol 1

Download or read book Latin Composition Vol 1 written by William Gardner Hale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-18 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Composition, Vol. 1: Based on Caesar My book is short. I allow myself a longer preface than is usual, since its plan differs considerably from the plans of its predecessors. The problem of the best handling of Latin composition is confessedly a hard one; and, of all years, the second year of the high-school course presents the greatest difficulty. In no field are the existing materials for Latin study so unsatisfactory. In the first place, our books give us, on the average, at least three times as many lessons as can actually be used. The necessity to which the teacher is put of omitting two-thirds of the material seriously impairs any merits which the general plan of a book may possess, and makes impossible, for either him or his pupils, a feeling of definite accomplishment at the end. In the second place, while some connected prose is now included in all the books, the matter for translation in those lessons which provide syntactical treatment, and from which, accordingly, the teacher will naturally make his selections for class work, consists of disconnected sentences, often mean ingless or even absurd, and not infrequently in direct contra diction to the statements, of the Latin author on whom they are supposed to be based. Seemingly, too, the writers of our books have taken little account of the Opportunity given by the Latin author here and there for an especially effective illustration of constructions, and have also had no thought for the gradual developing of an organic syntactical whole. It is no wonder if the entire business of writing Latin seems to the student dull and unreal, and if this dullness and unreality are reflected back upon the reading of his Latin author. The present book is conceived upon a different plan. The points which I have had especially in mind are the following. Book Book of Latin Prose Composition

Download or read book Book of Latin Prose Composition written by Jefferson Elmore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Book of Latin Prose Composition: For the Use of Colleges and Advanced, Classes in Schools This book aims to provide first for systematic work in syntax to reenforce and supplement that of the usual preparatory course. For convenience, the constructions selected for special attention are illustrated in short notes at the beginning of each chapter. The exercises in point of vocabulary are intended to be closely connected with the student's reading, and to this end have in view words which occur in texts (such as Cicero's Cato Major, the Andria, and the Phormia of Terence) which are usually read early in the college course. Most of the required words have, however, already been met with in the preparatory authors. In fact a comparison shows that more than ninety per cent of the Vocabulary of this book is also found in Lodge's Vocabulary of High School Latin.
