Book excerpt: The high-pressure direct-injection (HPDI) of natural gas in a compression ignition engine has the potential to reduce demand for petroleum derived fuels and significantly reduce the level of pollutants and greenhouse gases emitted from heavy duty transport vehicles. A new HPDI injector was tested where diesel is injected into a gas/diesel reservoir in the injector and the diesel and gas are then co-injected into the combustion chamber. In order to identify interactions between the diesel and gas in the reservoir, two different injector geometries were tested: prototypes A and B. Prototype B had reduced reservoir volume to increase gas velocity inside the injector. A majority of the tests were conducted in a single-cylinder test engine derived from a Cummins ISX diesel engine. As prototype A was being modified to create Prototype B this test engine was moved to a larger test cell. After updating the electrical, mechanical, and safety systems, the test engine in the new test cell was found to run repeatably; however, emissions comparisons between both test cells was not possible due to different analyzers being used. Single gas and double gas injections were conducted for both injector prototypes. The single gas injection tests found that increasing the diesel injection mass reduced the mass of gas injected. Increased diesel injection mass also shortened ignition delay, reduced unburned and partially burned fuel and increased NOx emissions. Holding the diesel injection mass constant and reducing the gas injection mass had the same effect as increasing diesel on ignition delay and gaseous emissions. If the diesel injection mass was kept constant and a second gas injection was added, the heat release due to the first injection decreased and the start of combustion was retarded. This appears to have occurred because some of the diesel was carried into the cylinder by the second injection and less diesel was available in the first injection to promote ignition. Double gas.

Book excerpt: Natural gas has a high auto-ignition temperature, therefore natural gas engines use an ignition source to promote combustion. The high-pressure direction-injection (HPDI) systems available use small diesel injections prior to the main gas injection. A new series of HPDI injectors have been developed that inject diesel and gas simultaneously through the same holes. In order to understand and control injection and combustion behavior in an engine, it is essential to understand how injection mass is related to the diesel/gas ratio and injection command parameters. Three prototype injectors are examined. "Prototype B" most closely resembles a standard J36 HPDI injector, but has a modified diesel needle that injects diesel internally into a common diesel/gas reservoir. Prototypes "CS & CSX" have the diesel needle eliminated and replaced with a flow restrictor. The pressure difference between the diesel and the gas controls the quantity of diesel injected. A single pulse width (GPW) for the gas needle controls the fuel quantities. An injection visualization chamber (IVC) was developed for flow measurements and optical characterization of injections into a chamber at pressures up to 80 bar. Diesel and natural gas are replaced by VISCOR® and nitrogen to study non-reacting flows. A novel feature of the IVC is a retracting shroud that allows the injector to reach steady-state prior to imaging. For low commanded injection duration (GPW less than 0.60 ms), the relation between GPW and injected mass is non-linear, for all injectors tested. For gas pulse widths greater than 0.65 ms the Co-injectors exhibit approximately linear behavior with higher diesel fuelling quantities lowering gas flow quantities. All Co-injectors are compared to baseline gas flow quantities of a standard J36 to show design difference effects on flow quantities. The sensitivity of gas flow to diesel in injection quantities, as well as the discharge coefficient are computed and theoretically modeled for each.

Book excerpt: Natural gas direct injection and glow plug ignition assist technologies were implemented in a single-cylinder, optically-accessible engine. Initial experiments studied the effects of injector and glow plug shield geometry on ignition quality. Injector and shield geometric effects were found to be significant, with only two of 20 tested geometric combinations resulting in reproducible combustion. Further experiments explored the effects of equivalence ratio and intake pressure on ignition delay, engine performance, and exhaust emissions. Combustion was found to proceed in a stratified-premixed mode at lower equivalence ratios, and a free-mixing mode at the higher equivalence ratios. Both combustion modes resulted in high NOx emissions. Stratified-premixed combustion produced higher hydrocarbon emissions, and lower levels of particulate matter and carbon monoxide, when compared to free-mixing combustion. Higher intake pressure was found to reduce all emissions levels. This effect was largely attributed to better charge mixing achieved from pressure-driven increase in engine swirl momentum.

Book excerpt: Ducted fuel injection (DFI) has been proposed as a strategy to enhance the fuel/charge-gas mixing within the combustion chamber of a direct-injection mixing-controlled compression-ignition engine. The concept involves injecting each fuel spray through a small tube within the combustion chamber to facilitate the creation of a leaner mixture in the autoignition zone, relative to a conventional free-spray configuration (i.e., a fuel spray that is not surrounded by a duct). This dissertation investigates the effects of ducted fuel injection on engine-out emissions and efficiency with two-orifice and four-orifice injector tips across a wide range of conditions. A numerical study contributes to the understanding of the fluid flow effects of DFI. The experiments in chapter two use a two-orifice fuel injector to test two duct configurations relative to conventional diesel combustion. The result is that DFI is confirmed to be effective at curtailing engine-out soot emissions. It also breaks the tradeoff between emissions of soot and nitrogen oxides (NO[subscript x]) by simultaneously attenuating soot and NO[subscript x] with increasing dilution. The third chapter expands on the second by comparing ducted fuel injection to conventional diesel combustion over a wide range of operating conditions and at higher loads (up to 8.7 bar gross indicated mean effective pressure) with a four-orifice fuel injector. This chapter is achieved through sweeps of intake-oxygen mole-fraction, injection duration, intake pressure, start of combustion timing, fuel-injection pressure, and intake temperature. Ducted fuel injection is shown to curtail engine-out soot emissions at all tested conditions. Under certain conditions, ducted fuel injection can attenuate engine-out soot by over a factor of 100. In addition to producing significantly lower engine-out soot emissions, ducted fuel injection enables the engine to be operated at low-NO[subscript x] conditions that are not feasible with conventional diesel combustion due to high soot emissions. The fourth chapter explores 1.1 bar IMEP[subscript g] (low load) conditions and 10 bar IMEP[subscript g] (higher-load) conditions with the same four-orifice fuel injector as in chapter three. DFI and CDC are directly compared at each operating point in the study. At the idle condition, the intake dilution was swept to elucidate the soot and NO[subscript x] performance of DFI in this new load range. This expands the range of conditions over which DFI has been shown to attenuate soot formation. It also shows that DFI enables low-NO[subscript x], low-load operation that is not achievable with CDC due to excessive soot formation at high dilution levels. The fifth chapter uses a numerical model to develop the understanding of the fluid flow effects of DFI. This enabled studies of entrainment and mixing that would have been much more challenging to do in an experiment. This showed that DFI enhances charge gas entrainment before the duct and blocks entrainment inside of the duct. Mixing is enhanced by the duct, which resulted in lower peak equivalence ratios at the end of the duct.

The computational simulation of this next-generation heavy-duty engine can provide deep insights of the gas injection and ignition characteristics and help understand the emission formation process, and hence, a KIVA-3v based three-dimensional computational model was developed and improved to represent the configuration of a glow plug assisted direct-injection natural gas engine. This thesis presents the important conclusions about the numerical studies of the natural gas ignition and emissions by using this engine computational model. Preliminary simulations revealed that the shield for a glow plug, an ignition assist for natural gas in compression-ignition engines, can highly improve the natural gas ignition stability compared to an unshielded glow plug, and the design of the glow plug shield has great potential for the further improvement of the natural gas ignition. The different shield designs, characterized by the parameters such as shield opening shape, number and distribution, were evaluated by using the improved KIVA model. The simulated results clearly demonstrated the three key functions of a good shield design. A multi-opening shield, consisting of four small openings in a diamond shape, can achieve all three requirements and hence highly reduce the natural gas ignition delay and improve the ignition stability, compared to the original single-opening shield. The proper emission models are critical for the numerical simulations of natural gas engine emissions. For the gaseous species, a kinetic package, CANTERA, is coupled to KIVA CFD code to simulate the formation of important emissions, such as C2H2 and NOx. Book excerpt: Effects of variations in natural gas composition on autoignition of natural gas under direct-injection (DI) diesel engine conditions were studied experimentally in a constant-volume combustion vessel and computationally using a chemical kinetic model. Four fuel blends were investigated: pure methane, a capacity weighted mean natural gas, a high ethane content natural gas, and a natural gas with added propane typical of peak shaving conditions. Experimentally measured ignition delays were longest for pure methane and became progressively shorter as ethane and propane concentrations increased. At conditions characteristic of a DI compression ignition natural gas engine at Top Dead Center (CR=23:1, p = 6.8 MPa, T = 1150K), measured ignition delays for the four fuels varied from 1.8 ms for the peak shaving and high ethane gases to 2.7 ms for pure methane. Numerically predicted variations in ignition delay as a function of natural gas composition agreed with these measurements.
