High Point State Park is visited by thousands annually, and from the highest peak in New Jersey one can see three states and enjoy a vista for miles around. This park, one of the oldest in the state, has a rich history going back more than seventy-five years. High Point State Park and the Civilian Conservation Corps explores the history of the fascinating landmark, which was a gift of Colonel Anthony and Susie Kuser to the people of New Jersey in 1923. The famed landscape firm Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Massachusetts, was retained to design the park's facilities. The job of carrying out many of the proposals in the plan fell to the Civilian Conservation Corps, a Depression-era federal agency that combined work relief efforts with conservation work. The laborers, known as the CCC boys, developed the layout of the park from 1933 to 1941. Much of their work remains and is still used by visitors today.

Excerpt: The Taconic State Parkway (often called the Taconic or the TSP and known administratively as New York State Route 987G), is a 104.12-mile (167.56 km) divided highway between Kensico Dam and Chatham, the longest parkway in the U.S. state of New York. It follows a generally northward route midway between the Hudson River and the Connecticut and Massachusetts state lines. Its southernmost three miles are a surface road; from the junction with the Sprain Brook Parkway northward it is a limited-access highway. It has grade-separated interchanges from that point to its northern terminus; in the three northern counties there are also at-grade intersections. It is open only to passenger vehicles, as with other parkways in New York, and maintained by the state Department of Transportation (NYSDOT), the fourth agency to have that responsibility. Franklin D. Roosevelt, who had long envisioned a scenic road through the eastern Hudson Valley, was instrumental in making it a reality as a way to provide access to existing and planned state parks in the region. Its winding, hilly route was designed by landscape architect Gilmore Clarke to offer scenic vistas of the Hudson Highlands, Catskills and Taconic regions. The bridges and now-closed service areas were designed to be aesthetically pleasing. It has been praised for the beauty of not only the surrounding landscape and views it offers, but the way the road itself integrates with and presents them. It was completed in...

Book The Civilian Conservation Corps

Download or read book The Civilian Conservation Corps written by Jackie McFadden and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a list of citations covering the wealth of information written about the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was President Franklin D. Roosevelt's favorite and most respected New Deal program. It provided economic assistance and hope for the future to the many enlisted men and their families during the height of the Great Depression. These men developed state parks, built roads and bridges and restored the environment from the devastation caused by droughts and deforestation of the west. Through hard work, they found renewed pride in themselves and their country. Their efforts can be seen in former camp sites and parks across the nation. There continues to be a fascination with the CCC. It is often studied as a model program of youth service work, conservation, and adult education. This collection will be useful to all who study the New Deal era and especially to those who concentrate on the CCC. The bibliography is organized by material type, including Federal Government documents, magazine, and journal articles, ERIC documents, books (including theses and dissertations), videos and films. further assist the researcher.

Book Montague

  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Montague written by Alicia C. Batko and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Montague Township sits at the high point of New Jersey, cradled by the Delaware River and the Kittatinny Mountains, where New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania converge. The Dutch initially settled in the Minisink Valley and helped define the character of the area. Founded in 1759, the township evolved along the river, which encouraged trade and travel, and on the legendary Old Mine Road, a Native American trail and trade route. By 1826, the Milford Bridge was built and would serve as a gateway to the Poconos. Following the Civil War, farms dotted the landscape, and city residents escaped the industrial boom by frequenting the Brick House and Rock View hotels and neighboring summer boarding homes. The range of vistas served as inspiration for John Newton Hewitt and other artists. With progress and infrastructure heralding change, High Point State Park and Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area were formed to protect natural resources, yet historic structures within them vanished.
