Book Eco efficient concrete

Download or read book Eco efficient concrete written by F. Pacheco Torgal and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume of polymeric wastes such as tyre rubber and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles is increasing at a fast rate. An estimated 1000 million tyres reach the end of their useful lives every year and 5000 million more are expected to be discarded in a regular basis by the year 2030. Only a small part is currently recycled and millions of tyres are just stockpiled, landfilled or buried. As for PET bottles annual consumption is over 300 000 million units. The majority is just landfilled. This chapter reviews research published on the performance of concrete containing tyre rubber and PET wastes. Furthermore it discusses the effect of waste treatments, the size of waste particles and the waste replacement volume on the fresh and hardened properties of concrete.

Book Eco efficient concrete

Download or read book Eco efficient concrete written by E. Güneyisi and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since ordinary self-compacting concrete (SCC) is usually associated with high material costs due to its high binder and chemical admixture content, researchers are currently attempting to produce SCC with high volumes of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), to make it cost effective and more durable. The SCMs used in this type of SCC, namely fly ash (FA), ground-granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS), silica fume (SF), metakaolin (MK) etc., are generally industrial by-products and waste materials. A subsidiary effect of this SCC composition is to conserve the environment and non-renewable natural material resources. This chapter reviews the current literature on fresh properties of SCC containing high-volume SCMs, and explains the effect of high-volume SCMs on the mechanical and durability-related properties of SCC.

Book Eco efficient concrete

Download or read book Eco efficient concrete written by B.L. Damineli and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter discusses strategies for mitigating CO2 emissions from the concrete chain. Current strategies, which focus on cement production processes such as clinker replacement, kiln efficiency, fuel substitution and CO2 capture, among others, are not effective enough to compensate for the increase in production that is expected to occur in the future. Binder use efficiency is therefore a crucial strategy for decreasing environmental impacts. Exploratory data from literature, real market and lab research indicates that the potential for decreasing emissions from the concrete chain is very high, and will require changes to the formulation and processing of concrete, as well as the production of aggregates, cement and fillers.

Book Eco efficient concrete

Download or read book Eco efficient concrete written by F. Pacheco-Torgal and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbonation is a major cause of concrete structure deterioration, leading to expensive maintenance and conservation operations. The eco-efficient construction agenda favors the increase of the use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) to reduce Portland cement's consumption and also the use of recycled aggregates concrete (RAC) in order to reduce the consumption of primary aggregates and to avoid landfill disposal of concrete waste. A wide range of literature has been published in the field of concrete carbonation related to the use of SCMs and/or RCA. Fowever, the different conditions used limit comparison, and in some cases contradictory findings are noted. Besides, since most investigations are based on the use of the phenolphthalein indicator, which provides a poor estimate of the real concrete carbonation depth, there is a high probability that past research could have underestimated the corrosion potential associated with concrete carbonation. This chapter reviews current knowledge on concrete carbonation addressing carbonation depth measurement and the use of SCMs and RAC.

Book Eco efficient concrete

Download or read book Eco efficient concrete written by M.A.G. Aranda and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yeelimite-containing, Ca4Al3O12(SO4), cements are attracting considerable interest for their inherently low CO2 emissions during fabrication, and also because they offer the possibility of tailored properties and performances in the resulting mortars and concretes. Here, we initially disentangle the nomenclature and compositions of these cements and, chiefly, distinguish between yeelimite-rich calcium sulfoaluminate cements (CSA, Al2O3 content ranging between 30 and 40wt%) and belite-rich yeelimite-intermediate (BCSAF, Al2O3 content ~15wt%) cements, also known as sulfobelite. Belite-active BCSAF cement may become an alternative to Portland cement for large-scale structural applications, although more research is still needed. Clinkering, hydration and durability issues of pastes, mortars and concretes derived from yeelimite-containing cements, and their blended cements, are discussed.
