Book High energy Laser Target Interactions

Download or read book High energy Laser Target Interactions written by Robert J. Papa and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general model of high-energy laser interactions with solid surfaces is presented. Fluid transport equations are used to describe the heating and vaporization of a solid surface irradiated by intense laser energy. The vaporized target material diffuses into an ambient gas. Both the target vapor and ambient gas can ionize. Separate transport equations are used for the ambient gas, the gas of atoms in an excited state, the electrons, the target vapor, the ionized ambient gas, and the ionized target vapor. Among the over 30 physical processes included in the model are: laser wave absorption, electron and ion gas heating, diffusion of each species, excitation collisions, recombination, radiation transport, photoionization, shock formation, cascade ionization, thermionic emission, neutral impact ionization and energy, and momentum transfer among all fluid species. a computer program has been developed to numerically integrate these transport equations. The ignition and propagation of laser-supported absorption waves (LAWs) are studied as a function of incident power level. Graphs are presented of the temperature and density profiles of each species at various instants in time as a function of the incident laser power level. (Author).

Book Directed Energy Weapons

Download or read book Directed Energy Weapons written by Bahman Zohuri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 829 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book delves deeply into the real-world technologies behind the ‘directed energy weapons’ that many believe exist only within the confines of science fiction. On the contrary, directed energy weapons such as high energy lasers are very real, and this book provides a crash course in all the physical and mathematical concepts that make these weapons a reality. Written to serve both scientists researching the physical phenomena of laser effects, as well as engineers focusing on practical applications, the author provides worked examples demonstrating issues such as how to solve for heat diffusion equation for different boundary and initial conditions. Several sections are devoted to reviewing and dealing with solutions of diffusion equations utilizing the aid of the integral transform techniques. Ultimately this book examines the state-of-the-art in currently available high energy laser technologies, and suggests future directions for accelerating practical applications in the field.“br>/div

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Directed Energy Weapons is nothing new to mankind, historically the origination of such weapons falls in centuries ago when first time the famous Greek mathematician, physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer Archimedes of Syracuse used different mirrors to collect sunbeams and focusing them on Romans fleet in order to destroy enemy ships with fire. This is known as the Archimedes Heat Ray. Archimedes may have used mirrors acting collectively as a parabolic reflector to burn ships attacking Syracuse. The device was used to focus sunlight onto approaching ships, causing them to catch fire. Of course the myth or reality of Archimedes Heat Ray still is a questionable story, but certain experiments with the help of a group of students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology was carried out with 127 one-foot (30 cm) square mirror tiles in October of 2005 that was focused on a mock-up wooden ship at a range of around 100 feet (30 m). The flames broke out on a patch of the ship, but only after the sky had been cloudless and the ship had remained stationary for around ten minutes. It was concluded the device was a feasible weapon under these conditions.

Book Outstanding Problems in High Power Pulsed Laser Target Interactions

Download or read book Outstanding Problems in High Power Pulsed Laser Target Interactions written by B. E. Freeman and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made of the interaction of a high-power laser beam with a target in air. A laser-supported radiation wave in the air is predicted. Models of this process were developed. An analytic model of the steady-state was compared with a transient numerical model using a one-dimensional radiation/hydrodynamic code. Comparisons with data indicate agreement for Nd-glass frequency laser radiation, but discrepancies for CO2 laser frequency. Speculations are made about the source of the discrepancy. Keywords: Laser beam in air: Laser-supported radiation wave; Laser-target interaction.

Book Laser Matter Interaction for Radiation and Energy

Download or read book Laser Matter Interaction for Radiation and Energy written by Hitendra K. Malik and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-03-14 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of high-power lasers with matter can generate Terahertz radiations that efficiently contribute to THz Time-Domain Spectroscopy and also would replace X-rays in medical and security applications. When a short intense laser pulse ionizes a gas, it may produce new frequencies even in VUV to XUV domain. The duration of XUV pulses can be confined down to the isolated attosecond pulse levels, required to study the electronic re-arrangement and ultrafast processes. Another important aspect of laser-matter interaction is the laser thermonuclear fusion control where accelerated particles also find an efficient use. This book provides comprehensive coverage of the most essential topics, including Electromagnetic waves and lasers THz radiation using semiconducting materials / nanostructures / gases / plasmas Surface plasmon resonance THz radiation detection Particle acceleration technologies X-ray lasers High harmonics and attosecond lasers Laser based techniques of thermonuclear fusion Controlled fusion devices including NIF and ITER The book comprises of 11 chapters and every chapter starts with a lucid introduction to the main topic. Then sub-topics are sedulously discussed keeping in mind their basics, methodology, state-of-the-art and future perspective that will prove to be salutary for readers. High quality solved examples are appended to the chapters for their deep understanding and relevant applications. In view of the nature of the topics and their level of discussion, this book is expected to have pre-eminent potential for researchers along with postgraduate and undergraduate students all over the world.

Book Integrated Laser Target Interaction Experiments on the RAL Petawatt Laser

Download or read book Integrated Laser Target Interaction Experiments on the RAL Petawatt Laser written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the construction of the first Petawatt laser on the Nova laser facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory we are witnessing the emergence of similar Petawatt-class laser systems at laboratories all around the world. This new generation of lasers, able to deliver several hundred joules of energy in a sub-picosecond pulse, has enabled a host of new discoveries to be made and continues to provide a valuable tool to explore new regimes in relativistic laser-plasma physics--encompassing high energy X-rays and -rays, relativistic electrons, intense ion beams, and superstrong magnetic fields. The coupling in the near-future of multi-kiloJoule Petawatt-class lasers with large-scale fusion lasers.including the NIF and Omega EP (US), LIL (France), and FIREX (Japan)--will further expand opportunities in fast ignition, high energy X-ray radiography, and high energy density physics research. The 500 J Petawatt laser at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is currently the highest energy short-pulse laser in the world. In this paper we describe a recent experimental campaign carried out on the facility. The campaign, performed by a large collaborative team from eight different laboratories, was designed to study a variety of relativistic laser-interaction phenomena including laser absorption, fast electron transport, proton heating, and high-brightness x-ray generation. The wide scope of the experiment necessitated the deployment of a very large set of diagnostics--in total twenty-five separate instruments. In order to obtain the most comprehensive set of measurements all twenty-five diagnostics were fielded simultaneously on every shot.
