Book excerpt: A phase-shifting diffraction interferometer (PSDI) has been integrated into an adaptive optics (AO) system developed by LLNL for use on the three meter Shane telescope at Lick Observatory. The interferometer is an all fiber optic design, which is extremely compact. It is useful for calibrating the control sensors, measuring the aberrations of the entire AO optical train, and measuring the influence functions of the individual actuators on the deformable mirror. The PSDI is particularly well suited for this application because it measures converging, quasi-spherical wavefronts, such as are produced by an AO imaging system. Thus, a PSDI can be used to measure the aberrations of the entire AO system, in-situ and without errors introduced by auxiliary optics. This provides an extremely accurate measurement ((approximately) 5 nm RMS) of the optical properties of the AO system.

Book excerpt: Any adaptive optics system must be calibrated with respect to internal aberrations in order for it to properly correct the starlight before it enters the science camera. Typical internal calibration consists of using a point source stimulus at the input to the AO system and recording the wavefront at the output. Two methods for such calibration have been implemented on the adaptive optics system at Lick Observatory. The first technique, Phase Diversity, consists of taking out of focus images with the science camera and using an iterative algorithm to estimate the system wavefront. A second technique uses a newly installed instrument, the Phase-Shifting Diffraction Interferometer, which has the promise of providing very high accuracy wavefront measurements. During observing campaigns in 1998, both of these methods were used for initial calibrations. In this paper we present results and compare the two methods in regard to accuracy and their practical aspects.

Book excerpt: Adaptive optics is a field which is coming into its own with new discoveries occurring almost daily both in astronomy and in applications of AO in applied fields. In an adaptive optics system, the output from a wavefront sensor is used to calculate corrections that actively remove distortions from an image. The applications of adaptive optics in vision science have received considerable impetus from the knowledge developed by astronomers about how to correct images using AO technology. It is expected that developments in adaptive optics will radically change the face of astronomy in the 21st century. These systems will largely overcome the main limitation of ground-based telescopes, namely the severe reduction in image quality caused by turbulence in the Earth's atmosphere. Intended for use at near infrared wavelengths, adaptive optics allow imaging and spectroscopy at the limit of resolution imposed by optical diffraction an advance in astronomer's ability to view the heavens unparalleled since the invention of the telescope. AO is now also entering clinical medicine in the field of ophthalmology and other related fields. This new book presents several hundred current abstracts in the field, each fully indexed, for ease of access and contains a CD ROM for further research.

Book excerpt: ''Extreme'' adaptive optics systems are optimized for ultra-high-contrast applications, such as ground-based extrasolar planet detection. The Extreme Adaptive Optics Testbed at UC Santa Cruz is being used to investigate and develop technologies for high-contrast imaging, especially wavefront control. We use a simple optical design to minimize wavefront error and maximize the experimentally achievable contrast. A phase shifting diffraction interferometer (PSDI) measures wavefront errors with sub-nm precision and accuracy for metrology and wavefront control. Previously, we have demonstrated RMS wavefront errors of 1.5 nm and a contrast of10{sup 7} over a substantial region using a shaped pupil without a deformable mirror. Current work includes the installation and characterization of a 1024-actuator Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems (MEMS) deformable mirror, manufactured by Boston Micro-Machines for active wavefront control. Using the PSDI as the wavefront sensor we have flattened the deformable mirror to 1 nm within the controllable spatial frequencies and measured a contrast in the far field of10{sup 6}. Consistent flattening required testing and characterization of the individual actuator response, including the effects of dead and low-response actuators. Stability and repeatability of the MEMS devices was also tested. Ultimately this testbed will be used to test all aspects of the system architecture for an extrasolar planet-finding AO system.

Book excerpt: The point diffraction interferometer (PDI) employs a point-diffraction spherical wavefront as ideal measurement reference, and it overcomes the accuracy limitation of reference optics in traditional interferometers. To overcome the limitation of measurement range either with pinhole (low light transmission) or with single-mode fiber (low NA), a single-mode fiber with narrowed exit aperture has been proposed to obtain the point-diffraction wavefront with both high NA and high power. It is a key issue to analyze the point-diffraction wavefront error in PDI, which determines the achievable accuracy of the system. The FDTD method based on the vector diffraction theory provides a powerful tool for the design and optimization of the PDI system. In addition, a high-precision method based on shearing interferometry can be applied to measure point-diffraction wavefront with high NA, in which a double-step calibration including three-dimensional coordinate reconstruction and symmetric lateral displacement compensation is used to calibrate the geometric aberration. The PDI is expected to be a powerful tool for high-precision optical testing. With the PDI method, a high accuracy with RMS value better than subnanometer can be obtained in the optical surface testing and submicron in the absolute three-dimensional coordinate measurement, demonstrating the feasibility and wide application foreground of PDI.

Book excerpt: Extreme ultraviolet projection lithography operating at a wavelength of 13nm requires surface figure accuracy on each mirror to be better than 0.25nm rms. A new type of interferometry, based on the fundamental process of diffraction, is described that can intrinsically achieve the required accuracy. Applying this principle, two independent spherical wavefronts are generated - one serves as the measurement wavefront and is incident on the optic or optical system under test and the other serves as the reference wavefront. Since they are generated independently their relative amplitude and phase can be controlled, providing contrast adjustment and phase shifting capability. Using diffraction from a single mode optical fiber, different interferometers can be configured to measure individual mirrors or entire imaging systems. Measurement of an EUV projection system is described. 5 refs., 4 figs.

Book excerpt: We propose to build a three telescope Michelson optical interferometer equipped with wavefront compensation technology as a demonstration and test bed for high resolution Deep Space Surveillance (DSS) and Astronomy. Each telescope will have a liquid crystal (LC) Adaptive Optics (AO) phase retarder capable of providing diffraction or near diffraction limited operation. We will combine the wavefronts from the three telescopes using a conventional beam recombination system and acquire and track the fringes formed with a Low Light Level Fringe Tracking system (LLLFT). The telescopes, fringe tracker. a photon counting (Baker) camera, and LC devices and associated wavefront sensors are novel ideas currently under development at the USAF's Phillips Laboratory (PL) for DSS and theft combination should yield a state-of-the-art system equal or superior in performance to the best of the current generation of AO and Interferometric systems but for a few percent of the cost.

This wavefront can then be used to determine a reference wavefront which will precorrect for the non-common-path aberrations and produce the desired wavefront at the science detector. We describe two phase retrieval algorithms that can be used and a set of simulation studies of AO system calibration. We present the initial experimental results of applying this technique in calibration of the Lick Observatory laser guidestar AO system in a later paper.

Book excerpt: Next generation extreme ultraviolet (EUV) optical systems are moving to higher resolution optics to accommodate smaller length scales targeted by the semiconductor industry. As the numerical apertures (NA) of the optics become larger, it becomes increasingly difficult to characterize aberrations due to experimental challenges associated with high-resolution spatial filters and geometrical effects caused by large incident angles of the test wavefront. This dissertation focuses on two methods of wavefront metrology for high resolution optical systems. The first method, lateral shearing interferometry (LSI), is a self-referencing interferometry where the test wavefront is incident on a low spatial frequency grating, and the resulting interference between the diffracted orders is used to reconstruct the wavefront aberrations. LSI has many advantages over other interferometric tests such as phase-shifting point diffraction interferometry (PS/PDI) due to its experimental simplicity, stability, relaxed coherence requirements, and its ability to scale to high numerical apertures. While LSI has historically been a qualitative test, this dissertation presents a novel quantitative investigation of the LSI interferogram. The analysis reveals the existence of systematic aberrations due to the nonlinear angular response from the diffraction grating that compromises the accuracy of LSI at medium to high NAs.
