Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hidden Gold With a quick motion, Wade half raised his rifle from the crook of his arm toward his Shoulder, and then snorted grimly as the herders scrambled for shelter. Coyotes! He muttered, reflecting that constant as sociation with the beasts that such men tended, seemed to make cowards of them all. With an ominous shake of his head, he went back on the ridge to his waiting horse, eager to bear word Of the invasion to Santry, his ranch foreman and closest friend. Thrusting the short-barreled rifle into its scabbard beneath the stirrup leather, he mounted and rode rapidly away. Dusk was gathering as he pushed his way through the willows which fringed Piah Creek and came out into the clearing which held his ranch buildings. Nestling against the foot Of a high bluff with the clear waters of the creek sparkling a scant fifty yards from the door, the log ranch house remained hidden until one was almost upon it. TO the left, at the foot of a long slope, the corrals and out-buildings were Situ ated, while beyond them a range of snow-capped mountains rose in majestic grandeur. Back Of the house, at the top of the bluff, a broad tableland ex tended for miles; this, with Crawling Water Valley, comprising the fine range land, on which fattened three thousand head Of cattle, carrying the Wade brand, the Double Arrow. Barely an hour before, the owner had surveyed the scene with more than satisfaction, exulting in the promise of prosperity it seemed to convey. Now all his business future was threatened by the coming of the sheep. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Thread of Gold Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Thread of Gold Classic Reprint written by Arthur Christopher Benson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Thread of Gold I Sate to-day, in a pleasant hour, at a place called The Seven Springs, high up in a green valley of the Cotswold hills. Close beside the road, seven clear rills ripple out into a small pool, and the air is musical with the sound of running water. Above me, in a little thicket, a full-fed thrush sent out one long-drawn cadence after another, in the joy of his heart, while the lengthening shadows of bush and tree crept softly over the pale sward of the old pasture-lands, in the westering light of the calm afternoon. These springs are the highest head-waters of the Thames, and that fact is stated in a somewhat stilted Latin hexameter carved on a stone of the wall beside the pool. The so-called Thames-head is in a meadow down below Cirencester, where a deliberate engine pumps up, from a hidden well, thousands of gallons a day of the purest water, which begins the service of man at once by helping to swell the scanty flow of the Thames and Severn Canal. But The Seven Springs are the highest hill-fount of Father Thames for all that, streaming as they do from the eastward ridge of the great oolite crest of the downs that overhang Cheltenham. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beyond the Sunset: A Tale of Love and Pirate Gold "Truly, thou art my very son, dear child," said Colonel Chillingworth, resting the point of his blade upon the floor, and panting from his exertions. "Thou hast fair winded me, what with the vigor of thy arm and the cleverness of thy wrist. I have reared up a pupil who is better than her master." His daughter laughed, and, fondling her rapier, nodded gaily when she saw that he was rested and ready to begin again. And so the shining blades flashed and sparkled once more, and made merry music which so entranced them that they did not hear the door when it opened, nor Algernon Sidney when he came softly into the room and stood quietly in the corner, watching them at play.
