Christiana is the daughter of the biggest arms dealer on the West Coast, Angus Byrne. She's also the sole witness and number one suspect in the murder of her boyfriend, found dead in her Newport Beach boutique. Isaiah Quintabe is coerced into taking the case to prove her innocence. If he can't, Angus will harm the brilliant PI's new girlfriend, ending her career. The catch: Christiana has multiple personalities. Book excerpt: High Five! combines the spellbinding charm of a timeless parable with cutting-edge information about why teams are important and what individuals and organizations can do to build successful ones. Through the story of Alan Foster, a workplace one-man band, High Five! identifies the four key ingredients of winning teams. Although Alan is an effective producer, he is unwilling to share the spotlight by partnering on projects and is fired because, as his boss puts it, "Alan, we need good producers who are good team players, too." It is a bitter pill for him to swallow. While mulling over his disappointment, he takes his son to his grade-five hockey practice, where it is clear that his son's team, the Riverbend Warriors, knows nothing about teamwork, either. When the team's two overworked coaches learn of Alan's plight, they persuade him to join their ranks, and he finds himself charged with teaching himself and the players the meaning of teamwork. With the help of a woman friend-a former girls' basketball coach who has "won more high school basketball championships than anyone"-Alan and the Warriors learn the magic of teamwork and that "none of us is as smart as all of us." With its simple style and easy-to-follow techniques, High Five! is a must-read for anyone seeking to learn the value and power of teamwork.

Book Christians Get Stuck Too

Download or read book Christians Get Stuck Too written by Thomas Edward and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The air buzzed with whispers as the church members awaited the arrival of the speaker. The senior and associate pastors blitzed down the aisle to meet me in the foyer. The senior pastor panted. "I'm glad to meet you! Our associate pastor here made a mistake. He forgot to check with me before proceeding to invite you to speak on this subject. I don't think...I mean, we don't think it would be an appropriate subject to expose the congregation to at this time." The associate pastor apologized. They escorted me back through the entry doors... The subject of sexual abuse was definitely a touchy one, but one that Thomas Edward felt was necessary to have a frank discussion about. Now, in his book, Christians Get Stuck Too, Edward confronts issues that many Christians face but are hesitant to broach: sexual abuse, addictions, pornography, teen pregnancy, and more. Thomas's personal story of rejection from the Christian community as a male survivor of sexual abuse is daunting. His laborious journey toward healing prepared and strengthened his resolve to step forward as an advocate to shatter the silence and help others. He is unflinching in his discussion of touchy topics. Referencing actual life coaching sessions, he exposes a myriad of problems and vulnerabilities experienced by us all. Edward uses facts, scripture, examples, anecdotes and modules that anyone can use to work toward getting unstuck.

Book Reforming Legislatures

Download or read book Reforming Legislatures written by Peverill Squire and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2024-06-06 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legislatures are ubiquitous in the American political experience. First created in Virginia in 1619, they have existed continuously ever since. Indeed, they were established in even the most unlikely of places, notably in sparsely populated frontier settlements, and functioned as the focal point of every governing system devised. Despite the ubiquity of state legislatures, we know remarkably little about how Americans have viewed them as organizations, in terms of their structures, rules, and procedures. But with the rise of modern public opinion surveys in the twentieth century, we now have extensive data on how Americans have gauged legislative performance throughout the many years. That said, the responses to the questions pollsters typically pose reflect partisanship, policy, and personality. Generally, respondents respond favorably to legislatures controlled by their own political party and those in power during good economic times. Incumbent lawmakers get ratings boosts from having personalities, “home styles” that mesh with those of their constituents. These relationships are important indicators of people’s thoughts regarding the current performance of their legislatures and legislators, but they tell us nothing about attitudes toward the institution and its organizational characteristics. This study offers a unique perspective on what American voters have historically thought about legislatures as organizations and legislators as representatives. Rather than focusing on responses to surveys that ask respondents how they rate the current performance of lawmakers and legislatures, this study leverages the most significant difference between national and state politics: the existence of ballot propositions in the latter. At the national level Americans have never had any say over Congress’s structure, rules, or procedures. In contrast, at the state level they have had ample opportunities over the course of more than two centuries to shape their state legislatures. The data examined here look at how people have voted on more than 1,500 state ballot propositions targeting a wide array of legislative organizational and parliamentary features. By linking the votes on these measures with the public debates preceding them, this study documents not only how American viewed various aspects of their legislatures, but also whether their opinions held constant or shifted over time. The findings reported paint a more nuanced picture of Americans’ attitudes toward legislatures than the prevailing one derived from survey research. When presented with legislative reform measures on which concrete choices were offered and decisions on them had to be made, the analyses presented here reveal that, counter to the conventional wisdom that people loved their representatives but hated the legislature, voters usually took charitable positions toward the institution while harboring skeptical attitudes about lawmakers’ motives and behaviors.
