Book Hexagonal Variations

Download or read book Hexagonal Variations written by Jo McCormack and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2011-03 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hexagonal Variations provides an essential overview of key debates about contemporary French society and culture. Concise, challenging and comprehensive, its chapters each address the processes of change and redefinition that characterise France today. Contributors analyse and situate cinematic, literary, online and visual texts, mediatic, political and everyday discourses, in each case pinpointing how diversity, plurality and reinvention inflect cultural and social evolution in France. The chapters in the collection share a key set of thematic concerns and raise topics for debate among scholars and students alike. Central to these are questions about France’s uncertain place and role in Europe and the wider world; the morphing topography of its capital; and the many conundrums posed by the persistence of Republican paradigms in a global environment. If France is no longer the exception, what are the versions and varieties of being French that are lived, thought and imagined in the new millennium?

The game has a long history spanning several centuries and has been played the world over for it develops strategic thinking and tactical planning skills. Chess is intellectually stimulating and challenging - and offers limitless possibilities at every stage of play. The very nature of the game makes it amenable to systematic study and mastery over time. There are several variants of Chess which offer a level-playing field for amateurs who can think logically. This book is the outcome of the author's curiosity about new Chess variants which can be played on boards with different geometries, different sets of rules with different objectives. This entirely new look at Chess offers: Chess inspired games that reflect situations and events from daily life. Games inspired by popular sports such as squash, volleyball and cricket. Chess games as a motivational tool in education to help students develop interest and liking for their subjects and achieve better academic performance. Chess inspired puzzles. Chess as an outdoor sport and indoor team-game. A. V. Murali's engrossing book highlights the different perspectives of Chess - showcasing its broader applicability, not just for amusement, but for physical and intellectual development as well.

Book Remaking The Hexagon

Download or read book Remaking The Hexagon written by Gregory Flynn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, distinguished French and U.S. historians, economists, and political scientists explore the dimensions of France's current crisis of identity. Although every European nation has been adjusting to the dramatic transformations on the continent since the end of the Cold War, France's struggle to adapt has been particularly difficult. Responding to a mix of external and internal pressures, the nation is now questioning many basic assumptions about how France should be governed, what the objectives of national policies should be, and ultimately what it means to be French. Rather than focusing explicitly on the problem of identity, the contributors offer differing perspectives on the issues at the heart of the country's debate about its future. They begin by examining how France's historical legacy has influenced the way the nation confronts contemporary problems, giving special attention to the manner in which past traumatic experiences, socioeconomic and cultural traditions, and the belief in French exceptionalism have shaped current political thinking. They then consider how favoring a more open approach to trade and building a strong franc have changed the culture of economic policy and created dilemmas for the rule of the state as a guarantor of welfare. They go on to explore changes in elite structures, the evolution of the party system, and the spillover of new political conditions that are driving France's efforts to establish a strong national identity in the area of trade. Finally, the contributors examine the central influence of the changing international framework on France's self-definition, on its security policies, its relationship to the European Union, and its basic perceptions of the state and sovereignty. They also consider how the answers to these questions are affecting France's relationships with the outside world and the overriding policy dilemmas faced by all the European nations.

Book Sociolinguistic Variation in Contemporary French

Download or read book Sociolinguistic Variation in Contemporary French written by Kate Beeching and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divided into three main sections on Phonology, Syntax and Semantics, this new volume on variation in French aims to provide a snapshot of the state of sociolinguistic research inside and outside metropolitan France. From a diatopic perspective, varieties in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Africa and Canada are considered, mainly with respect to phonological features but also focusing on syntactic and lexical evolutions (the relative clause in Ivorian French and discourse markers in Canadian French). The acquisition of stylistic features of French figures in chapters on both first and second language learners and variation across different genres is addressed with respect to non-standard non-finite forms. Finally, a section on semantic change traces the way that interactional and other socio-historical factors affect word meaning. The volume will appeal to (socio-)linguists with an interest in contemporary French as well as to advanced undergraduates and post-graduate students of French and specialists in the field.

Book The Rare Earths in Modern Science and Technology

Download or read book The Rare Earths in Modern Science and Technology written by J. McCarthy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fifteenth Rare Earth Research Conference was held June 15-18, 1981 on the Rolla campus of th.e University of Missouri. The conference was hosted by the Graduate Center for Materials Research, the College of Arts and Science, and the School of Mines and Metallurgy. It was expected that the conference would provide a forum for critical examination and review of the current and important trends in rare earth science and technology. To this end, over 170 papers were presented in both oral and poster sessions by researchers representing some nineteen countries. The program committee was particularly gratified to see the diversity of effort being devoted to rare earth research by different disciplines allover the world. The collection of refereed papers in this volume attests to the fact that the objectives of the program committee were indeed realized. A high point of the meeting was the presentation of the Frank n. Spedding Award to a most distinguished colleague, Professor Georg Busch, Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule, Zurich. Prof essor W. Edward hi"allace, University of Pittsburgh, recipient of the first Frank H. Spedding Award made the presentation to Professor Busch who then gave the Plenary Address.

Book Solid State Ionics

Download or read book Solid State Ionics written by B. V. R. Chowdari and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid atate ionics, being a multidisciplinary area, is expected to grow at a faster rate in the new millennium, prompting the discovery of new materials and devices, as well as helping to optimize the known devices, especially the portable power sources and display systems. The Asian Society for Solid State Ionics (ASSSI) plays a significant role in bringing together researchers from the Asian countries, every two years, to exchange notes and ideas, to foster friendship and collaboration, and to discuss the prospects. The topics covered in this volume are: ion dynamics, theoretical modeling, ion-conducting polymers, gels and ceramics, glasses, crystalline materials including nano-phases, composites, electrode/electrolyte interfaces and novel experimental techniques. Papers on crystalline materials deal with ion conduction in Li, Na, Ag, Tl, F and O-containing compounds. Materials and device aspects have received wide coverage, especially the areas of lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and solid oxidefuel cells,(SOFCs). Rechargeable high energy density LIBs, especially those employing immobilized gel or polymer electrolyte, are the favorite portable power sources in the new millennium. As expected, a large number of papers on both cathodes and polymer electrolytes for LIBs were presented at the conference. The papers on fuel cells almost exclusively deal with SOFCs, indicating the great importance being given to this area in Japan and China. A breakthrough in materials and technology of SOFC is expected in the coming decade. This volume will be useful not only to the active researchers in the field but also to youngsters entering the exciting area of solid state ionics.
