Book Diamond Heteroepitaxy by Bias Enhanced Nucleation

Download or read book Diamond Heteroepitaxy by Bias Enhanced Nucleation written by Vidhya Sagar Jayaseelan and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diamond has exceptional semiconducting and optical properties that can be used for a wide variety of new applications such as high temperature, high power devices, and optical windows. Exploitation of these properties of diamond needs the development of heteroepitaxial diamond growth process on traditional substrates such as Silicon and Silicon Carbide. Bias enhanced nucleation (BEN) followed by Plasma Enhanced Chemical vapor Deposition (PECVD) has been recognized as a promising route to achieve this goal. However, the BEN process for heteroepitaxy and its mechanism is not well understood. In this study, a system is designed and fabricated to enable the application of bias during diamond deposition in an ASTEX PECVD system, and heteroepitaxial diamond films are grown. The evolution of the oriented diamond film and its microstructure is studied by SEM, TEM, and XRD techniques revealing the formation of misoriented grains, extensive twinning and low angle grain boundaries. The effect of the BEN process conditions on the degree of orientation is investigated. It is observed that the orientation of the films improved at lower bias durations, methane flow rates and bias voltages. TEM images of the nucleation layer are analyzed, and the changes in the nucleation layer grain structure with process parameters are studied. Significant variation in the microstructure and grain size from an average of about 560 nm to about 10 nm is observed with change in process conditions. The BEN process is investigated and the nature of the deposit forming during this step is revealed using SEM, TEM and Raman spectroscopy to be predominantly a nanocrystalline diamond film along with rhombohedral and amorphous carbon. A simple model based on the formation of a nanocrystalline diamond particles during BEN, followed by their growth and coalescence under the plasma is proposed to describe the oriented film formation. The variations in microstructures and orientation are correlated with the process conditions under which they are formed.

Download or read book Quantitative EPR written by Gareth R. Eaton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-10 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing need in both industrial and academic research to obtain accurate quantitative results from continuous wave (CW) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments. This book describes various sample-related, instrument-related and software-related aspects of obtaining quantitative results from EPR expe- ments. Some speci?c items to be discussed include: selection of a reference standard, resonator considerations (Q, B ,B ), power saturation, sample position- 1 m ing, and ?nally, the blending of all the factors together to provide a calculation model for obtaining an accurate spin concentration of a sample. This book might, at ?rst glance, appear to be a step back from some of the more advanced pulsed methods discussed in recent EPR texts, but actually quantitative “routine CW EPR” is a challenging technique, and requires a thorough understa- ing of the spectrometer and the spin system. Quantitation of CW EPR can be subdivided into two main categories: (1) intensity and (2) magnetic ?eld/mic- wave frequency measurement. Intensity is important for spin counting. Both re- tive intensity quantitation of EPR samples and their absolute spin concentration of samples are often of interest. This information is important for kinetics, mechanism elucidation, and commercial applications where EPR serves as a detection system for free radicals produced in an industrial process. It is also important for the study of magnetic properties. Magnetic ?eld/microwave frequency is important for g and nuclear hyper?ne coupling measurements that re?ect the electronic structure of the radicals or metal ions.

Download or read book Sapphire written by Elena R. Dobrovinskaya and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the second half of the twentieth century, a new branch of materials science had come into being — crystalline materials research. Its appearance is linked to the emergence of advanced technologies primarily based on single crystals (bulk crystals and films). At the turn of the last century, the impending onset of the “ceramic era” was forecasted. It was believed that ceramics would play a role comparable to that of the Stone or Bronze Ages in the history of civilization. Naturally, such an assumption was hypothetical, but it showed that ceramic materials had evoked keen interest among researchers. Although sapphire traditionally has been considered a gem, it has developed into a material typical of the “ceramic era.” Widening the field of sapphire application necessitated essential improvement of its homogeneity and working characteristics and extension of the range of sapphire products, especially those with stipulated properties including a preset structural defect distribution. In the early 1980s, successful attainment of crystals with predetermined char- teristics was attributed to proper choice of the growth method. At present, in view of the fact that the requirements for crystalline products have become more str- gent, such an approach tends to be insufficient. It is clear that one must take into account the physical–chemical processes that take place during the formation of the real crystal structure, i.e., the growth mechanisms and the nature and causes of crystal imperfections.
