Book excerpt: Hero Tales from American History by Henry Cabot Lodge and Theodore Roosevelt brings together stories of the heroism, grit and determination of some well-known and lesser-known people who played significant roles in shaping the history of America. It brings out the bravery, daring and endurance to fight against all odds. In the bargain this title is nothing short of inspirational. Both authors are men of eminence in their own right and hence there is an underlying authoritative ring in the narrative which stands out. Hero Tales from American History starts with a touching preface that defines the foundations on which the present day USA is built. The book provides chapters dedicated to various men of honour including George Washington, John Quincy Adams, Lincoln and many others. Each section is well researched and gripping. The two authors have taken great pains in bringing out the valour and perseverance of their respective heroes which makes this title difficult to put down once started. Little known facts, anecdotes and incidents find their place in the book and portions dedicated to important events like the Battle of Trenton and Storming of Stony Point are worth a mention. The authors provide visual respite through various illustrations spread across the length of the book which give perspective to the narrative. In its endeavour, Hero Tales from American History not only caters to students of American history but the casual reader as well, it inspires the reader to be a better human being and appreciate the hardships and challenges the heroes in this book overcame. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a good thing for all Americans; and it is an especially good thing for young Americans; to remember the men who have given their lives in war and peace to the service of their fellow-countrymen; and to keep in mind the feats of daring and personal prowess done in time past by some of the many champions of the nation in the various crises of her history. Thrift; industry; obedience to law; and intellectual cultivation are essential qualities in the makeup of any successful people; but no people can be really great unless they possess also the heroic virtues which are as needful in time of peace as in time of war; and as important in civil as in military life. As a civilized people we desire peace; but the only peace worth having is obtained by instant readiness to fight when wronged—not by unwillingness or inability to fight at all. Intelligent foresight in preparation and known capacity to stand well in battle are the surest safeguards against war. America will cease to be a great nation whenever her young men cease to possess energy; daring; and endurance; as well as the wish and the power to fight the nation's foes. No citizen of a free state should wrong any man; but it is not enough merely to refrain from infringing on the rights of others; he must also be able and willing to stand up for his own rights and those of his country against all comers; and he must be ready at any time to do his full share in resisting either malice domestic or foreign levy.

This bookoriginally published in 1895was designed to revive the venerable Christian tradition of charting the topography of the past. It was meant to bring the tales of forgotten American heroes back to the fore of the American story. Comprised of true tales, to be sure, the authors wrote them to read like valiant fables.

Book excerpt: Edition perfect as a gift. "It is difficult to conceive that there ever was a time when the United States paid a money tribute to anybody. It is even more difficult to imagine the United States paying blackmail to a set of small piratical tribes on the coast of Africa. Yet this is precisely what we once did with the Barbary powers, as they were called the States of Morocco, Tunis, Tripoli, and Algiers, lying along the northern coast of Africa. The only excuse to be made for such action was that we merely followed the example of Christendom. The civilized people of the world were then in the habit of paying sums of money to these miserable pirates, in order to secure immunity for their merchant vessels in the Mediterranean. For this purpose Congress appropriated money, and treaties were made by the President and ratified by the Senate."

Book excerpt: This book is designed to be used as a supplementary historical reader in our public schools' sixth and seventh grades, as well as for any other students aged twelve to fifteen. It is also intended to be used as supplementary reading in conjunction with the study of a formal textbook on American history. Historical matters that are instinct with human life attract and hold the attention of boys and girls, and whet their desire to know more about the real meaning of their country's history. For this reason, the authors have selected rapid historical narratives, treating notable and dramatic events, and have embellished them with more details than is feasible within the limits of most school books.
