Book Hero and Leander and Other Poems

Download or read book Hero and Leander and Other Poems written by Christopher Marlowe and published by . This book was released on 2008-12 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher "Kit" Marlowe (1564-1593) was an English dramatist, poet and translator of the Elizabethan era. His first drama was Dido, Queen of Carthage. His first play performed on the London stage was Tamburlaine about the conqueror Timur, who rises from shepherd to warrior. Tamburlaine was a success, and was followed with Tamburlaine Part II. The two parts were published in 1590; however all of Marlowe's other works were published posthumously. They include: The Jew of Malta, Edward the Second, The Massacre at Paris and The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus. George Chapman (c. 1559-1634) was an English dramatist, translator, and poet. He was a classical scholar, and his work shows the influence of Stoicism. Chapman has been identified as the Rival Poet of Shakespeare's Sonnets by William Minto, and as an anticipator of the Metaphysical Poets. Chapman is best remembered for his translations of Homer's Iliad, Odyssey, and Batrachomyomachia.

Book The Mystification of George Chapman

Download or read book The Mystification of George Chapman written by Gerald Snare and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Chapman (1559–1634) continues to cut a significant figure as a dramatist and translator of Homer, but his reputation as a poet has fared poorly. The common critical view has made him notorious as a writer of “difficult” poetry, to the point of being considered guilty of deliberate and wanton obscurity. Gerald Snare argues that the fact of the matter is quite the reverse: his supposed difficulty as well as the moral and philosophical imperatives that are assumed to dominate his work are in fact the construction of critics. The Mystification of George Chapman is an argument against the accepted view of Chapman's art. Snare examines Hero and Leander to determine the nature of its poetics and its relation to Mousaios and Marlowe; he reports on the imitative strategies of Ovid's Banquet of Sense and declares that it deserves a reputation quite different from that of the most difficult poem in the English language; and he refers to Chapman's own criticism found in the prefaces and notes often attached to his poems. The author finds Chapman's poems were responses to the critical pressures inherent in adapting Greek, Latin, and contemporaneous English authors to his art, and he disputes the modern critical tendency to assume that doctrine, and not poetic practice, was the primary source of poetic energy in the Renaissance.

Book Doctor Faustus Second Edition

Download or read book Doctor Faustus Second Edition written by Christopher Marlowe and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2007-02-12 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctor Faustus is a classic; its imaginative boldness and vertiginous ironies have fascinated readers and playgoers alike. But the fact that this play exists in two early versions, printed in 1604 and 1616, has posed formidable problems for critics. How much of either version was written by Marlowe, and which is the more authentic? Is the play orthodox or radically interrogative? Michael Keefer’s early work helped to establish the current consensus that the 1604 text was censored and revised; the Keefer edition, praised for its lucid introduction and scholarship, was the first to restore two displaced scenes to their correct place. Most competing editions presume that the 1604 text was printed from authorial manuscript, and that the 1616 text is of little substantive value. But in 2006 Keefer’s fresh analysis of the evidence showed that the 1604 quarto’s Marlovian scenes were printed from a corrupted manuscript, and that the 1616 quarto (though indeed censored and revised) preserves some readings earlier than those of the 1604 text. This edition has been updated and revised. Keefer’s critical introduction reconstructs the ideological contexts that shaped and deformed the play, and the text is accompanied by textual and explanatory notes and excerpts from sources.

Book The Cambridge Introduction to Christopher Marlowe

Download or read book The Cambridge Introduction to Christopher Marlowe written by Tom Rutter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a comprehensive survey of Christopher Marlowe's literary career, this Introduction presents an approachable account of the life, works and influence of the groundbreaking Elizabethan dramatist and poet. It includes in-depth discussions of all of Marlowe's plays, stressing what was new and revolutionary about them as well as how they made use of existing dramatic models. Marlowe's poems and translations, sometimes marginalised in discussions of his work, are analysed to emphasise their literary importance and political resonances. The book presents a balanced discussion of Marlowe's turbulent life and considers his afterlives: the influence of his work on other writers and examples of how his plays have been performed. In addition to introducing the reader to the historical and religious contexts within which Marlowe wrote, the Introduction stresses the qualities that continue to make his work fascinating: intellectual range, radical irony and an awareness of the dangerously compelling power of theatre.

Book Christopher Marlowe

Download or read book Christopher Marlowe written by Mrs Vivien Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major work brings together, for the first time in a single volume, all the recognized sources of Marlowe's dramatic work. Many of the forty-two texts presented here are of outstanding interest in their own right. Together they illuminate the cultural milieu which fostered Marlowe's talent, and deepen our appreciation of his dramatic methods. * Each of the texts is accessibly presented for the modern reader and is fully annotated. * Works in Latin or foreign vernaculars are translated, many for the first time, and modern spelling and punctuation are used throughout. * The sources for each play are examined individually and are thoroughly edited. Few libraries provide the range of sources contained in this one volume. The editors include texts of works such as the English Faust-Book from which Marlowe borrowed heavily, and provide substantial extracts from other books with which he was no doubt familiar. This book is an invaluable resource for all those interested in Marlowe and the development of Elizabethan theatre.
