Book The Stranger in the Woods

Download or read book The Stranger in the Woods written by Michael Finkel and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The remarkable true story of a man who lived alone in the woods of Maine for 27 years, making this dream a reality—not out of anger at the world, but simply because he preferred to live on his own. “A meditation on solitude, wildness and survival.” —The Wall Street Journal In 1986, a shy and intelligent twenty-year-old named Christopher Knight left his home in Massachusetts, drove to Maine, and disappeared into the forest. He would not have a conversation with another human being until nearly three decades later, when he was arrested for stealing food. Living in a tent even through brutal winters, he had survived by his wits and courage, developing ingenious ways to store edibles and water, and to avoid freezing to death. He broke into nearby cottages for food, clothing, reading material, and other provisions, taking only what he needed but terrifying a community never able to solve the mysterious burglaries. Based on extensive interviews with Knight himself, this is a vividly detailed account of his secluded life—why did he leave? what did he learn?—as well as the challenges he has faced since returning to the world. It is a gripping story of survival that asks fundamental questions about solitude, community, and what makes a good life, and a deeply moving portrait of a man who was determined to live his own way, and succeeded.

Book The Frog Prince s Adventure to Break The Curse

Download or read book The Frog Prince s Adventure to Break The Curse written by AQEEL AHMED and published by AQEEL AHMED. This book was released on 2023-11-02 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To sum it up: The amazing story of Prince Oliver, also known as the "Frog Prince," and his beloved Princess Amelia took place in the beautiful green Enchanted Forest. The interesting story began when a wicked witch cast a spell on Prince Oliver that turned him into a frog and told him he had to live as one until he found true love. He wanted a friend who could see through his green, slimy skin to the prince he really was, even though he looked different now. He went to the pond often to try to break the curse that held him back. For some reason, Princess Amelia went into the forest one sad day to pick wildflowers for her sick mother. She found Prince Oliver by the pond, and her kind heart saw how beautiful he was. She brought him home with her to try to keep her mom company. As the days turned into weeks, Prince Oliver and Princess Amelia became close friends who cared about each other a lot. As their relationship grew, Prince Oliver told Amelia about his curse. He promised Amelia that he would always be there for him and help him break the spell. As they went on their journey, they went deeper into the Enchanted Woods and met friendly woodland spirits, talking animals, and an old hermit who showed them how to break the curse. In order to do this, they had to give everything they had—a sacrifice that could only come from the heart—without expecting anything in return. At first, they were on a quest to help others, taking care of hurt animals, comforting the old, and bringing happiness to the forest. Prince Oliver suddenly turned back into a beautiful prince, showing how sincere and selfless their love was. The hermit tree told them what to do on their trip and said they would be successful. The famous love story of Prince Oliver and Princess Amelia in the Enchanted Forest showed how strong real love, friendship, and the beauty of the human heart can be. Their kindness and knowledge as leaders of their country had effects that went far beyond the Enchanted Forest. Their love story lived on and made many people believe in the healing power of love and giving without expecting anything in return. The pond next to the forest was where their trip began, and it stayed a place of love, laughter, and endless happiness. Frog families got together to talk about the good things about real love and the lessons they had learned along the way. The story of Prince Oliver and Princess Amelia's love story was always a source of hope, showing that real love could win over all problems and that miracles could happen in the middle of the Enchanted Forest. This is how the story starts: A long time ago, there was a friendly frog named Prince Oliver who lived in a lush, green forest. His home woods were like a picture of magic. The trees were so tall they seemed to reach the sky, and the soft wind blew the green leaves around. In the middle of the woods was a pond that looked like it was alive and as clear as glass. Even though he was in a beautiful place, Prince Oliver's story was anything but normal. Someone bad had cursed Prince Oliver to stay a frog until he found true love. He used to be a beautiful prince. A long time ago, Prince Oliver was a charming young man who was liked by everyone in the country because he was brave, kind, and looks so good. His eyes sparkled like gems and his smile could melt hearts. He lit up any room he walked into. As the prince walked around the palace grounds one fateful evening, he came across a mysterious woman. Her dark hair fell down her back, and her eyes showed things that no one could understand. She was a witch who had been watching Prince Oliver from afar because she liked how he looked and how he behaved. The sorceress went up to the prince with a fake sense of respect. She was actually jealous and mean. She purred, "You are a sight to behold, Prince Oliver, and I wish to offer you a gift as a token of my admiration." The prince, who was always kind and innocent, took her up on her offer. He didn't know that the witch was after bad things. The beautiful prince turned into a little green frog when she cast her spell with a sneaky glint in her eye. She laughed as she faded into the darkness and said, "You will stay in this form until someone really loves you for who you are." Oliver Prince had tears in his eyes. He was left alone by the pond in the lovely forest, and now his royal life is just croaks and hops. The curse was like a thick fog over him, and he had no idea when or how it would go away. Even though he had changed, he was still kind and gentle, and he hoped that someone would recognize him as the prince he used to be. To break the curse and come back as a prince, he hopped around the pond every day. In the forest, the prince met many frogs and other animals. They were all nice and inviting, but he felt like he was meant for more. He wished he had a real friend who could see the prince in him, even though his skin was green and slimy.

Book Coexistence in the Aftermath of Mass Violence

Download or read book Coexistence in the Aftermath of Mass Violence written by Eve Zucker and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-12-07 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coexistence in the Aftermath of Mass Violence demonstrates how imagination, empathy, and resilience contribute to the processes of social repair after ethnic and political violence. Adding to the literature on transitional justice, peacebuilding, and the anthropology of violence and social repair, the authors show how these conceptual pathways—imagination, empathy and resilience—enhance recovery, coexistence, and sustainable peace. Coexistence (or reconciliation) is the underlying goal or condition desired after mass violence, enabling survivors to move forward with their lives. Imagination allows these survivors (victims, perpetrators, bystanders) to draw guidance and inspiration from their social and cultural imaginaries, to develop empathy, and to envision a future of peace and coexistence. Resilience emerges through periods of violence and its aftermaths through acts of survival, compassion, modes of rebuilding social worlds, and the establishment of a peaceful society. Focusing on society at the grass roots level, the authors discuss the myriad and little understood processes of social repair that allow ruptured societies and communities to move toward a peaceful and stable future. The volume also illustrates some of the ways in which imagination, empathy, and resilience may contribute to the prevention of future violence and the authors conclude with a number of practical and policy recommendations. The cases include Cambodia, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, Colombia, the Southern Cone, Iraq, and Bosnia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scruffy Arabian colt of the mountains of Latin America is purchased by North American Tracer Montrose the morning his wife, Constance, angrily packs to leave him. The horse being a gift that Constance cannot check for her flight home, she delays her departure. She names him Ali Zán¾and soon encounters a herd of his kin fleeing a highland inferno. Tracer unites equestrian club riders and dirt-roughened cowboys to save the animals. The mismatched bunch form a trail riding club. Meanwhile, the purchase of Napoleon and True Love causes a cramp in Ali Zán's stable space. These older horses are bright and abrasive, strong and fearless, and champion the outback equine during nerve-wracking turns, jumps, and races. Tracer and Constance, rider novices, persist upon the backs of their steeds within the club arena and along the outback abyss, as well. But their horses poorly manage long-pent demands to achieve maddened equine goals. Their competitive spirits turn upon them. They find that neither rider nor trail obstruct them; that their devils must be accosted elsewhere. The youthful Ali Zán interprets this heart-rending tale by which horse and human are ridden, driven, and, often, bound.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Los Angeles Times Best Book of the Year: “Uniformly excellent” stories about our relationships with each other and with the treacherous natural world (Publishers Weekly). In the title story, a man and woman travel across an eerily frozen lake—under the ice. “The Distance” casts a skeptical eye on Thomas Jefferson through the lens of a Montana man’s visit to Monticello. “Eating” begins with an owl being sucked into a canoe and ends with a man eating a town out of house and home, and “The Cave” is a stunning story of a man and woman lost in an abandoned mine. Other stories include “The Fireman,” “Swans,” “The Prisoners,” “Presidents’ Day,” “Real Town,” and “Two Deer.” Each is remarkable in its own way, sure to please both new readers and avid fans of Rick Bass’s passionate, unmistakable voice. “Bass focuses a naturalist’s eye not only on the frozen lakes and interplay of predator and prey often found in his work but also on the ebb and flow of human emotions and relationships . . . Thought-provoking and entertaining, these stories move along quickly but continue to resonate long after the reader is done; several have been anthologized in award collections.” —Library Journal “Beautiful in their magical imagery, dramatic in their situations, and exquisitely poignant in their insights, these stories of awe and loss are quite astonishing in their mythic use of place and the elements of earth, air, fire, and water.” —Booklist “Bass puts his talent as a nature writer to terrific use.” —The New York Times Book Review “Bass’s language glistens with the beauty of the landscapes he evokes.” —San Francisco Chronicle Book Review

Book Tales of Vice and Virtue

Download or read book Tales of Vice and Virtue written by Adrian P. Tudor and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is presented for the first time an extraordinary medieval text, the first Old French Vie des Pères. The Vie des Pères is in fact a collective text comprising three branches and, at its fullest, over seventy individually enclosed pious tales / miracles. The first Vie – the first forty-one or -two tales – dates from the first third of the thirteenth century. It is a vitally significant but hitherto neglected part of the Old French canon. Indeed, in his preface to this volume Michel Zink, one of the most respected medievalists of his generation, notes that the qualities of the Vie des Pèrs ‘devraient valoir à son auteur une place au voisinage de celle qu’occupent pour nous celui de la Chanson de Roland ou Chrétien de Troyes.’ The tales are remarkably well written and offer fascinating glimpses of thirteenth-century life and spirituality. They were also extremely popular in Medieval France. Sharing close links with a number of traditions – fabliaux, Saints’ Lives, Miracles of the Virgin, Romance, Sermons – the Vie des Pères has value for those interested in many branches of vernacular literature, codicology, lexicography, art history, theology and philology. Tales of Vice and Virtue – the first sustained analysis of the entire first Vie des Pères to be published – is a groundbreaking book providing readers new to the text with detailed commentaries, offering abundant intertextual information for romance philologists, and suggesting many new areas for further research.
