Book excerpt: This book discusses literacy development in heritage language speakers and presents the results of four different quantitative studies that investigate the transfer of literacy skills in bi- and multilingual language development. The empirical studies focus on different populations of pupils, most of them located in various parts of Switzerland, and emphasise the potential residing in shared or transferred resources between their heritage languages and the languages spoken in the region to which their family has immigrated. The goal of all studies was to gain an understanding of the factors, both linguistic and non-linguistic in nature, that contribute to the development of language skills in both the heritage and school languages. Theoretical assumptions are put to the test via hypothesis testing and the generally shared assumptions on bilingual education are questioned based on the data. Furthermore, methodological problems in the investigation of linguistic interdependence are discussed. This book contributes to the scholarly investigation of potential beneficial effects in academic proficiency across languages in migrant children.

Funding for the project was provided to the Center for Applied Linguistics and SRI International by the U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences and the Office of English Language Acquisition, with additional funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development provided through the U.S. Department of Education. The authors review the state of knowledge on the development of literacy in language-minority children and youth, organized around five specific themes: *Development of Literacy in Second-Language Learners; *Cross-linguistic Relationships in Second-Language Learners; *Sociocultural Contexts and Literacy Development *Educating Language-Minority Students: Instruction and Professional Development; and *Student Assessment Each part begins with a synthesis chapter that spells out the research questions for the chapters in that part, provides background information, describes the methodology used, summarizes the empirical findings reported, addresses methodological issues, and makes recommendations for future research. The following chapters provide more detail on the individual studies reviewed for specific research questions. The volume includes two opening chapters, “Introduction and Methodology” and “Demographic Overview”; a closing chapter that summarizes the report, identifies cross-cutting themes, and makes recommendations for future research; and a CD-ROM providing a searchable database of research references. The audiences for this volume include researchers interested in the development of literacy in language-minority children and youth as well as those studying literacy more generally, and those concerned with improving the education of this population of students.

Book excerpt: Heritage language learners are individuals who grew up in homes where a nondominant societal language is spoken but received formal educational instruction in the dominant societal language. In the United States, any familial language spoken at home that is not English is considered a heritage language. Schools struggle to accommodate the needs of this growing heritage language population, resulting in a persistent disparity between heritage language learners and monolingual speakers. However, little research attention has been dedicated to understanding heritage language learners' literacy development and how their heritage language impacts acquisition of first and second languages and literacy skills. This dissertation investigated the behavioral and neurobiological impact of heritage language learner status on reading, writing, and the reading-writing relation. In the first study, I examined the influence of speaking a heritage language on adult heritage language learners' second language (English) reading, writing, and the reading-writing relation. Structural equation models indicated that heritage language learner status did not affect English reading, writing, and reading-writing relations. In addition, heritage language proficiency and use also had limited influences on adult heritage language learners' reading and writing in their dominant language. However, reading and spelling were found to be related regardless of heritage language learner status. In the second study, I investigated the reading-writing relations within and across heritage language learners' heritage and second languages during childhood. Linear regressions revealed that reading and writing were positively predictive of each other in children's heritage and second languages. This suggested that reading and writing mutually influence each other in both languages. However, the only cross-language relation observed was that of second language writing predicted heritage language reading. As such, child heritage language learners' literacy in their heritage language may have a limited influence on their dominant language literacy, likely due to the lower performance in heritage language literacy. In the third study, I examined the influence of children's heritage language on the intrinsic functional connectivity of their neurobiological reading network and the association between the network and children's second language (English) literacy. Resting-state functional connectivity analysis indicated that speaking a heritage language altered the intrinsic functional connectivity of the reading network and its relation with children's English reading. Heritage language learners were found to rely upon a more distributed reading network than monolingual children. Together, these dissertation studies contribute to our understanding of how speaking a heritage language is linked to individuals' literacy development in first and second languages. The results of the studies have potentially important implications for educational and parental practices, as well as bilingual theories.

Though there is a great diversity in both the distribution and degree of literacy in different countries, there has been an increasing awareness of the number of illiterates and the consequences of being illiterate. However, literacy is no longer seen as a universal trait. When one focuses on culturally-sensitive accounts of reading and writing practices, the concept of literacy as a single trait does not seem very feasible. A multiplicity of literacy practices can be distinguished which are related to specific cultural contexts and associated with relations of power and ideology. As such, literacy can be seen as a lifelong context-bound set of practices in which an individual's needs vary with time and place. This volume explores the use of literacy outside the mainstream in different contexts throughout the world. It is divided into four sections. Section 1 presents an anthropological perspective--analyzing the society and the individual in a society. Section 2 presents a psychological perspective--focusing on the individuals themselves and analyzing the cognitive and affective development of young children as they acquire literacy in their first and second languages. Section 3 presents an educational perspective--highlighting the variations in educational approaches in different societies as well as the outcomes of these approaches. Section 4 summarizes the studies presented in this volume. Both theoretical issues and educational implications related to the development of literacy in two languages are discussed. An attempt is also made to open up new directions in the study of literacy development in multilingual contexts by bringing these various disciplinary perspectives together.
