Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heredity and Evolution in Plants The present little book was originally intended to be merely a reprint of Chapters XXXI to XXXVIII of the authors Fundamentals of Botany. The reprinting of those chapters was suggested by comments received from various correspondents, who pointed out that the subject matter which they cover had not been elsewhere presented in so concise a treatment in one volume, and in a manner suited, not only to beginning students, but also to more general readers. The chapter on Experimental Evolution has received the approval of the author of the mutation theory, as being an accurate presentation of the essentials of that theory. "I have especially appreciated," writes Professor de Vries, "the statement of the difference between fluctuating and saltative variation, which is, to my mind, the real empirical basis for the theory, far more than the experiments on mutation with single plants. The relation of my view to Darwinism is misunderstood by many authors, and it is a great satisfaction to me that you have outlined it in such a plain way." In the preparation of the copy for reprinting, considerable new matter has been added, certain sentences and paragraphs, pertinent only to an elementary text-book, have been omitted, and others recast, and several fresh illustrations have been introduced, either as new or as substitutes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plant Genetics It should be realized that genetics is a natural out growth from the study of organic evolution. The con ception of evolution began as a speculation, but became scientific in connection with the work of lamarck and darwin. In such work the method used was that of Observation and inference. Facts were observed and an explanation was devised that would relate them. Resemblances and differences among species were noted, and it was inferred that these indicated degrees of relationship. It was assumed that closely related species must have had a comparatively recent common ancestry and that more distantly related species must have had a more remote common ancestry. Through comparisons of structure and of geographical distribution systems of phylogeny have been inferred, and an outline of the evolution of the plant and animal kingdoms has been the result. All of these conclusions are based upon comparison and inference. This method reached its extreme application in the work of darwin, whose observations included a range of forms and an extent of time unequaled by any pre ceding student oi evolution. It may be said that in darwin's work the method of comparison and infer ence reached the limit of its possibilities. The students of evolution were chiefly concerned With explaining the Changes that resulted in phylogeny. In other words. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heredity of Acquired Characters in Plants With regard to definite variations, Sir E. R. Lankester is also at variance with Darwin. These are now regarded by him as what are called acquired characters which, he asserts, cannot be handed on by inheritance to a new generation. They are, he says, a direct re action to the environment. It does not affect the stirps, the inner reproductive germs. Book Evolution and Genetics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Evolution and Genetics Classic Reprint written by Thomas Hunt Morgan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-25 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evolution and Genetics HE third reprinting Of the Vanuxem Lectures for 1915-16, entitled A Critique of the Theory of Evolution, having been exhausted, the publishers have asked for a revised edition. The revision is no less an attempt at a critique Of the evolution theory than its predecessor, but, as the change in title sug gests, greater attention is here paid to one Of the most debated questions among evolutionists today, namely, the bearing Of the recent discoveries in genetics and in mutation on the theory Of evolution. While in a general way Darwin's theory Of Natu ral Selection is independent Of the origin Of the new variations that furnish it with its materials, yet the scientific formulation Of the theory is intimately con nected with the origin and inheritance Of suitable vari ations. For instance, if most of the observed variabil ity Of animals and plants were due directly to the environment, and if the effects thus brought about were not inherited, such variability could no longer be appealed to as material for natural selection. Again, if the variations that appear as mutants are always defective types, they could not, even though they are inherited, be appealed to as furnishing ma terial for progressive evolution. Book Lectures on the Evolution of Plants Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on the Evolution of Plants Classic Reprint written by Douglas Houghton Campbell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Evolution of Plants In the present volume I have endeavored to present in as untechnical a manner as seemed feasible the more striking facts bearing upon the evolution of plant forms. While there are numerous excellent text-books in which most of the statements here given are clearly presented, there is none, at least in English, so far as I am aware, where a connected account of the development of the plant kingdom from an evolutionary standpoint has been attempted. Of course every modern system of classification is based upon the assumption of a genetic connection between the different groups, and must take into account the origin of plant forms; but these phylogenetic problems are necessarily subordinated in the general text-books. Moreover, these textbooks are, for the most part, avowedly prepared for the use of botanical students alone. It seemed to the writer that an accurate, if somewhat general, and not strictly technical, statement of our present knowledge concerning the data from which the genealogical history of the vegetable kingdom may be traced, might be of interest not only to such botanists as have not concerned themselves specially with this phase of the science, but also to zoologists, and those general readers who are interested in biological problems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Progress in the Study of Variation, Heredity, and Evolution Adequately to acknowledge Mr. Bateson's influence upon these pages is a more difficult matter, and not the less so because I have deliberately refrained as far as possible from consulting him whilst the book was in course of preparation, in order that it might retain if possible some traces of individuality. It is therefore clear that he is in no way responsible for its deficiencies. But, apart from the fact that I am conscious of having quoted his ideas at more points than could possibly be acknowledged seriatim, I owe to Mr. Bateson both my first introduction to the science of genetics, and a continual fund Of encouragement in the prosecution of studies connected with it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bonduriansky and Day challenge the premise that genes alone mediate the transmission of biological information across generations and provide the raw material for natural selection. They explore the latest research showing that what happens during our lifetimes—and even our parents’ and grandparents’ lifetimes—can influence the features of our descendants. Based on this evidence, Bonduriansky and Day develop an extended concept of heredity that upends ideas about how traits can and cannot be transmitted across generations, opening the door to a new understanding of inheritance, evolution, and even human health. --Adapted from publisher description.

Book Heredity and Eugenics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Heredity and Eugenics Classic Reprint written by R. R. Gates and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heredity and Eugenics The central problem of evolution is still the nature and causes of variation, while the practical problems of eugenics centre about heredity. Variation in past ages has already endowed the human race with an almost infinite variety of types and characters, many of the latter alternative in their inheritance. We have only to compare those we know best with their relatives and ancestors to realise how minute are the resemblances and differences which may be handed on to descendants and collateral lines. These are, no doubt, chiefly a matter of biological inheritance, though similarity of environment may play a' part in certain cases. Probably in no other species of animal or plant does the number of differences between individuals approach the number to be Observed in man. This is to be expected, because of the mental and physical complexity of the human organism; but it does not imply greater intrinsic variability than in other animals or plants. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heredity and Eugenics: A Course of Lectures Summarizing Recent Advances in Knowledge, in Variation, Heredity, and Evolution and Its Relation, to Plant, Animal, and Human Improvement Ment and Welfare During the summer of 1911, a course of lectures on heredity and allied topics was given at the University of Chicago, under the auspices of the biological departments. The purpose of the course was to present the recent develop ments of knowledge in reference to variation, heredity, and evolution, and the application of this new knowledge to plant, animal, and human development and improvement. The lectures were not intended for those trained in biology, but for a general university audience, interested in the progress of genetics as a matter of information rather than of study. The lecturers, therefore, did not address themselves to their colleagues, and did not attempt to include any considerable amount of new material. It is believed that a much larger audience than the one originally addressed might be interested in this summary of results in one of the important and recently cultivated fields of biology, and therefore this volume has been published. It is hoped that it may perform a service not only for those interested in biology as a field outside their own experience, but also for those biologists whose work deals with other phases of biology.
