Book Here and There Among the Alps Classic Reprint

Download or read book Here and There Among the Alps Classic Reprint written by Frederica Plunket and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Here and There Among the Alps These sensational and highly exciting works have, however, one great disadvantage, they check the energies and chill the aspirations of moderate walkers. To 'ladies they are particularly discouraging. How are they to attempt the ascent of the horns or dents, or pointes or spitzes of which they read and hear, if they are beset with such dangers and difficulties? How are they to clamber up precipices, where at each step the treacherous rocks may break beneath their feet '9 How are they to walk on the knife-like edges of snow ridges, where a single false step would be destruction, or to descend the steep ice-s10pe, where a slip is fatal? They feel that to attempt such performances would be absolute madness, risk ing other lives as well as their own, and they lay aside the fascinating volume with a sigh, and regret fully confess that the high Alps are beyond their powers, and that they must content themselves with small expeditions, and mule paths at moderate ele vations. It has valuable orchards where some Of the finest fruit of all the Alps is ripened, and where the sweetest honey is gathered by the bees. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the best mountaineers of our generation ?nally reveals the details of his many exciting extreme alpine ascents—ascents in which his only equipment is a pair of shoes and a small bag for holding chalk. Clinging to the crevasses in mountain walls, with muscles bulging as he makes his free ascent, Huber has become one of the world’s most recognized and photographed extreme alpine climbers. Along with many other legendary ascents detailed here, he and his brother set a new record of 2 hours and 46 minutes on El Capitan, The Nose, Yosemite Park in the Fall of 2007—a climb that usually takes three days. When he free-soloed the Kommunist’s famous peaks, Alexander Huber declared, “Why? For me, it is the search for my limits. On the other side, I am aware that the time is limited.” With major corporate sponsors like Adidas and Atmoic, this is a fascinating insight into one of the world’s best mountaineers.

Book A Little Journey to Italy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Little Journey to Italy Classic Reprint written by Clara E. Whitcomb and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Little Journey to Italy Europeans tell us that Europe is the most beautiful country in the world and that the most beautiful part of it is Italy. And this is true, for there is no country of so small an extent that contains such lovely scenery, thrilling history, and vast treasures of art. Great numbers of people who visit Italy are so charmed that they talk about it more than they do of any other foreign country. This being so, we also want to see for ourselves its great attractions. In the first place we consult our maps and learn that the shape of Italy resembles a seven-leagued boot. It is long and flaring at the top, with a slender foot and high heel. In length, Italy is seven hundred miles. In the extreme north it is three-hundred and fifty miles in width. Along the leg of the boot it averages one hundred miles in width - of course, being narrower in the toe and heel. From Lombardy, the Apennines extend down the length of Italy, branching off in broken lines, so that one range goes down into the toe and the other down into the heel. They resemble somewhat the seam along the side of a boot. If we stand upon the crest of the mountains in the heel, we observe that we are on a peninsula. Again when on the mountains near the hollow of the foot, we see that we are on another peninsula. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
