Book excerpt: A page-turning novel about the inner workings of the NYPD, based on the true story of a young officer's decades-long fight for respect in the male-dominated world. The Bronx, 1958. The Policewomen's Bureau isn’t respected within the Department, even when it handles cases the men can’t solve. Marie Carrara is a young police matron who wants to move beyond the grim routine of guarding female prisoners to become one of the few female detectives in the NYPD. Though she is a shy and naive, from a sheltered, immigrant background, Marie dives into the strange and terrifying world of big-city undercover work without hesitation, using her genuine innocence to deceive degenerates and drug dealers into thinking that she’s an easy target. As she begins to create tougher undercover characters, she discovers that they might be able to inspire her in her off-duty life as well. Despite the violence of her job, the sexism she faces daily, and a rocky-at-best marriage waiting for her at home, Marie is determined to make a name for herself within the NYPD and be the role model her young daughter deserves. With the support of Marie Cirile, the real-life inspiration for Marie Carrara, Edward Conlon adapts the true events of her memoir into a thrilling drama, a book only a best-selling author and decorated Bronx detective could have written.

Book excerpt: And So It Begins... is a fantasy novel written for a large audience of people in the world who have longed for something more or different. It is a novel about traveling to another reality and living your dreams. But, it is also about people, their relationships to each other, and their understanding of themselves and their own reality. This novel provides people with something we all need; the opportunity to examine ourselves from the safe distance of a reader in another world. The story begins with Roxanne Black, a college student in 20th century America who hates the reality in which she lives, trying desperately to get through college and life without losing her mind. Then, one day, something extraordinary happens; she is given a mysterious pendant by a twisted and equally mysterious old man who immediately vanishes. The next thing she knows, Roxie cant take the necklace off, she starts having nightmares about people calling to her, and, for some reason, she can read the thoughts of some of those around her. An attempt to find out information about the pendant leads her down the road of no hope. Soon she realizes that she may be stuck with the thing forever. A thought which is somewhat terrifying, yet appealing to her overactive imagination. However, just as she resolves herself to a life of enslavement, Roxanne is faced with a new twist. She is magically transported to another reality. Now, here is where the story gets immensely entertaining. Roxanne fins herself in a world filled with Lords, trolls, demons, and warriors, where she is informed that she is one of three Chosen who must save the world in its battle with the Betrayer, (a really scary demon-type who is wiping out civilization as they know it). Deciding to accept everything as reality and not just a mass hallucination brought on by sleep deprivation and reading one too many fantasy novels herself, Roxie accepts her role and begins her journey. However, her books never told her that alternate realities are still realities. Instead of having super powers, skills, and knowledge, Roxie is still herself. She must learn to fight and she must learn to understand the world she is in, and she has to do it all in time to save the world- no small task. She also has to interact with real people who have real problems themselves. Suddenly, she finds herself in the middle of reality, only with a new cast of characters. There are the 13 Lords sworn to protect the Land. Of those, Lord Earin is young, scared, proud, and falls deeply in love with Roxanne. His constant feelings of inadequacy provide a never ending challenge for Roxanne and the other Lords. High Lord Brennen is very old, strong, and tired. He has been through this battle before and carries the scars of the ages. He assumes a great deal of guilt for all that happens to those around him as he directs them closer and closer to war. Lord Anjalina is a fiery, proud Lord who will stop at nothing to save the world she loves. Everything is black and white to her. There are no inbetweens. Lord Ambrose, who only wants people to be happy. He provides emotional strength and guidance for all the others. Often, he is the only thing keeping everyone from insanity. Aside from the Lords, Roxanne comes face to face with warriors of all kinds. The tall, powerful General of the forces of good, General Sabastian, is in command of everything around him. He is sure of himself and confident in what has to be done. His orders and ideas leave no room for questions. He is a battle-worn, tactical genius. Yet, he too has been through this all before and shares the guilt of the High Lord. Another member of the fighting force is Major Elway who is notorious for getting out of impossible situations and getting into beds with the ladies. He is the "Joe Cool" of this reality, with plenty of reason to have a high opinion of himself. Next, there are the other two Chosen- Commander Gabr

Book Frances Burney

Download or read book Frances Burney written by Margaret Anne Doody and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treating Frances Burney (1752-1840) with the seriousness usually reserved for later novelists of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Margaret Anne Doody combines biographical narrative with informed literary criticism as she analyzes not only Burney's published novels, but her plays, fragments of novels, poems, and other works never published. Doody also draws upon a mine of letters and diaries for detailed and sometimes surprising biographical information. Burney's feelings and emotions forcefully emerge in her sophisticated and complex late novels, Camilla and The Wanderer. Her novels all relate to personal experience; as an artist she is attracted to the violent, the grotesque, and the macabre. She is a powerful comic writer, but her comedy is far from reflecting a shallow cheerfulness. Bringing a novelist's perspective to her material, in this 1989 book Doody shows an appreciation of the many dimensions of a predecessor's writings and she tells her story with force and conviction.

Book excerpt: REVISED, UPDATED AND WITH A NEW FOREWORD BY PAUL ABBOTT This edition of Suburban 100 includes new lyrics from the critically acclaimed albums, 22 Dreams and Wake Up the Nation, which has been nominated for the Mercury Music Award. Paul Weller first burst onto the national music scene with The Jam in 1977 and was quickly marked apart from his contemporaries as a brilliant lyricist. In a writing career that has now spanned three decades, his songs have been acclaimed, imitated and loved by many. Suburban 100 - the first selection of Paul Weller's lyrics - draws on songs written for The Jam, The Style Council and solo releases that, together, tell stories of life and love, rage and romance. The youthful frustrations of small-town life that fuelled Weller's early writing is palpable, as is the angry but poignant response to Thatcher's Britain. His lyrics, rooted in English suburban culture, explore the hopes, dreams and crashing disappointments of ordinary people. They also revel in the mystical beauty of the English country landscape and repeatedly revisit dreamlike childhood summers. For the first time Paul Weller shares his reflections on his lyrics, offering candid insights to his writing process and the inspiration behind some of pop music's best loved songs. Suburban 100 reveals aspects of a famously private man.

He has a knack for sensing an unhappy bride—and a talent for showing her what she needs to be happy. Even so, an intelligent man knows when he’s at the crossroads of destiny, the moment when everything in his life changes. For Cyrus, that’s when he meets Julia Drummond. Julia Drummond is painfully aware that no red-blooded woman should be able to deny the sensual assault of Cyrus Fortune, who wears power and influence like a finely tailored suit, and whose eyes promise passionate seduction. Still, she says no. She’s got her reasons—dangerous reasons—and yet she can’t trust her own body and heart from surrendering to the astonishing pleasure Cyrus reminds her she’s capable of simply when his knowing gaze meets hers across a crowded ballroom. He doesn’t know her secret, desperate terrors, but the passion he offers is irresistible. Just once, she tells herself. Just one night to know what sweet sin tastes like. And doesn’t every woman deserve that? This ebook includes an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

Book On the Origins of Speaking

Download or read book On the Origins of Speaking written by Lord Walsingham and published by New Generation Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-22 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a serious book examining the original sounds and meanings of languages right back to the Stone Age - up until now believed to be impossible. But it can also be seen as tracing the overwhelming sexual orientation of human thinking for the last six hundred thousand years or more - when we were only hominids, squatting round the camp fires at the mouths of our caves - to keep the sabre toothed tigers out. It was here that our original bare bottomed language committees first got to grips with meanings and their audible representation. The committees were convened as a result of the taming of fire, the high tech of the day. It was a cosy environment in a cold and hostile world, and the unaccustomed warmth led to an outburst of amorous inclinations, and the need to express them in words. Ka they thought echoic of the strike of flint on flint, and so striking, and so the tenderising of raw meat for which they had already been making "e;hand axes"e; for at least half a million years. It is from ka-ka for tenderising with a hand axe that our cooking comes! The flame did it for you. Flint knapping left a lot of "e;debetage"e; or waste flakes, whence ka-ka also came to mean waste - including today human waste. Metaphor led to odd bedfellows. All this evidence is decoded from an exhaustive forty year research into over a hundred languages, many of them dead ones, where like flies in amber our original Lithic (Stone Age) language roots are still embedded. There is nothing salacious in the tale. It simply tells it as it is and was, and it is not going to go away. This short version is abstracted from a major work of over 600 pages, and there is nothing in it which the ordinary man in the street (and his sister) can not easily follow. It ranks quite highly in the order of useless information, but it has its indirect usage. If you understand how all our languages have actually come about - the product of human whimsy - you will be that much less likely to believe some of the sillier alternative views put forward by ideologically inclined placemen. Lastly, how has Lithic Language been cracked? The answer lies in "e;semantic triangulation"e;. Believe it or not, all our languages today (over 6000) bear traces of the original meanings given to the sounds as we first learned to articulate them, and it is possible to work backwards using the current meanings in numerous languages to home in on the original source meanings which are common to the current ones. Then we can see if they make sense as a first guess by our Stone Age (hominid) forebears of what they thought of as the "e;natural"e; meanings of the sounds. They didn't do thinking very much. That is how they all guessed the same, or nearly the same. So we are probably on the right track: language was all spun by human whimsy, (over a few hundred millennia), from only a baker's dozen original articulated sounds. The English language alone reached a million words last year.
