Download or read book Not All Twins Are Alike written by Barbara Klein and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even twins are unique. Most people idealize twins, fantasizing a close, perpetually loving relationship. Yet Klein, herself an identical twin, demonstrates that twins have complicated and intense relationships that range from over-identification or excessive closeness to profound estrangement and conflict. Most twins who are raised as individuals deal with the significant emotional pain of separation in adolescence or young adulthood, yet as mature adults can come to love and respect each other as individuals. As Klein makes clear, the parenting that twins receive as infants and young children affects the relationships that they have with one another and with the world they choose to function in. Because parenting is a critical determinant of psychological well-being, it should be treated as a serious but manageable challenge. This book is a must-read for twins, their parents, and scholars, students, and other researchers and professionals dealing with mental health and child development.

Download or read book Piece Of My Heart written by David Dalton and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1972, Stonehill Books published David Dalton's Janis, a multimedia extravaganza that incorporated interviews, quotes, photographs, lyrics, Rolling Stone Clippings, sheet music, a record of rapping and singing, and prose as wild and moving as Janis's performances. Piece of My Heart is a reconstruction and revision of that early work - one of the first "rock 'n' roll" books—leaving the prose and interviews intact, adding dozens of new photos, and incorporating a wealth of new material. Here is the best possible portrait of the lonely teenager from Port Arthur, Texas, who took the blues farther than anyone before or since, offering revealing glimpses of her on the road—backstage with Jerry Lee Lewis, kidnapped in Kansas, partying with the Grateful Dead, the Band, Bonnie and Delaney, and with her own band, Big Brother and the Holding Company. But Piece of My Heart goes beyond Janis's own story to provide us with a portrait of the Kosmic Blues themselves—the self destruction that lies at the heart of the rock' n' roll myth.
Download or read book A Saint from Texas written by Edmund White and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-08-04 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Edmund White, a bold and sweeping new novel that traces the extraordinary fates of twin sisters, one destined for Parisian nobility and the other for Catholic sainthood. Yvette and Yvonne Crawford are twin sisters, born on a humble patch of East Texas prairie but bound for far more dramatic and tragic fates. Just as an untold fortune of oil lies beneath their daddy's land, both girls harbor their own secrets and dreams-ones that will carry them far from Texas and from each other. As the decades unfold, Yvonne will ascend the highest ranks of Parisian society as Yvette gives herself to a lifetime of worship and service in the streets of Jericó, Colombia. And yet, even as they remake themselves in their radically different lives, the twins find that the bonds of family and the past are unbreakable. Spanning the 1950s to the recent past, Edmund White's marvelous novel serves up an immensely pleasurable epic of two Texas women as their lives traverse varied worlds: the swaggering opulence of the Dallas nouveau riche, the airless pretension of the Paris gratin, and the strict piety of a Colombian convent. For nearly half a century, Edmund White's work has revitalized American literature, blithely breaking down boundaries of class and sexuality, and A Saint From Texas is one of his most joyous, gorgeously written, and piercing works to date.

Download or read book 21st Century Narratives of Maternal Ambivalence written by Rachel Williamson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Motherhood has long been depicted in reductive or limited terms. At once valorized and configured as the ultimate end-goal for socially condoned femininity, maternity is also highly mediated and scrutinized. This has resulted in a representational tradition that persists in imagining maternal subjects in rigid binary terms, pitting good mothers against bad. Largely in response to this repressive schema, recent years have marked the emergence of a diverse range of visual and literary texts about motherhood. While such texts vary in style, genre and form, this book argues that they are unified in their efforts to publicize embodied maternal experience and foreground maternal ambivalence, a concept that is best understood as a mother’s capacity to simultaneously love and hate her child. Although maternal ambivalence has become an increasingly popular topic of study with maternal scholars, its articulation within contemporary representations and narratives has yet to be adequately theorized and addressed, and this book aims to fill this gap.
