Stoddert says Knox's son, Lieutenant Henry [Jackson] Knox, will be assigned to the Constellation under Captain [James] Barron. He thinks it would be most advantageous...that he serve on board of a southern ship.

Book excerpt: Knox explains to Williams the situation surround Henry Jackson Knox and his refusal to accept midshipman status after being refused promotion to lieutenant. Knox's son appears to have no proper value for money, and is therefore very extravagant. Knox thought the Navy would help straighten his son out, but now Knox fears his son will be involved in a course of errors and vices which may overwhelm him. Knox asks Williams to take him on and help Henry Jackson Knox overcome his weaknesses. Knox is afraid his son's love of gambling has left a considerable debt that Knox cannot pay. Knox prefers that his son rejoin the Navy, but if that is not possible, Knox thinks it would be best if son travel to Maine to be with his parents. Henry Jackson Knox should travel by water and not land because land travel would be more expensive and he would be too distracted by bad company and tempted to stray if went by land. If President Adams is still in Philadelphia and Williams thinks it is appropriate to consult him on this matter, Knox consents to allow Williams to do so.

Assures Washington, Were the prayer of the petition to be granted, the officers in a very few years would make the swift settlement on the frontiers, and form a strong barrier against the barbarians... Suggests the creation of the office of master general of ordnance, noting that the current Minister of War (Benjamin Lincoln, Secretary at War) does not predict the appointment of a successor to his post. Asserts that the master general of ordnance would ...reside near Congress to execute such orders as they should think proper for the dignity or security of the republick. Expresses his wish for Washington to keep this letter in confidence. Notes that if he were appointed as master general of ordnance, he would give the post his zealous assistance. His wife Lucy sends her respectful regards to Martha Washington. Knox's retained draft.

Knox asks Barron, then, if his son Henry Jackson Knox could be an acting Lieutenant with the emoluments only of a midshipman.

Relates that his wife Lucy received a letter from her brother, possibly Thomas Flucker, informing her of the family's welfare (the Fluckers, as Loyalists, left America for England during the Revolutionary War). A note on page four discusses correspondence between Mrs. [Knox?] and Mr. Smith.
