Writes that the proposition of Morris and Wadsworth does at once preclude any kind of contract of mine with the Board - but as was hinted by you, I am still of opinion that I might be very servicable [sic] to them if he negotiates a contract for the business in his quarter. Adds, having already furnish'd every supply that has been call'd for by Genl [Henry] Jackson for the Recruits already raised, he is persuaded he could continue to supply them to universal satisfaction. Declares, But a candid examination of [the Constitution], will most probably produce a conviction that it is one of the best models of a republican government ever presented to the sons of men. Comments on different groups' opposition to the Constitution, noting that the southern states will oppose it because they think it will support the commercial interest of the north. Remarks that the Constitution will affect the projects of the paper money... Notes that America is seen with contempt abroad. Of the current government writes, The present ship is unfit to encounter the riding storm, it will not answer even for the smooth surface of peace- it must sink- let us then embark on board the new ship offered by the united [wisdom] of our country. Notes that, every thing depends on Massachusetts to set an example (by adopting the Constitution). Relates that Pennsylvania is the only state whose Legislature is in session, and they will soon set a date for their state ratification convention to be called. Date inferred based on Knox's reference to the unanimous adoption by Congress on Friday of the 28 September 1787 Resolution calling for state conventions to consider the Constitution.

Also comments on recent attacks upon him in a newspaper: I have read the attack in Adams's paper - The writer must be a fellow of diabolical sensation to be sure - It shall not give me pain. I shall put all those sons of darkness and envy under my feet one of these days but, the time has not arrived. The report of the Committee of Congress is my mark - If it is received I sing - if it is rejected I soar. Further discusses his finances and accounts, and asks her not to mention any of this information to Henry Jackson. Of his planned meeting with Joseph Brandt, the famous Mohawk chief, he writes, I think our overtures for peace will be successful - One thing may prevent them - The inroads of the frontier people against positive orders - and the killing our messengers. Asks Lucy to befriend Captain Anthony's wife, since Knox has experienced some solid friendships through Anthony. Ends by stating that he had two family dinners with the President this week.
