Warns Roberts this behavior will not be tolerated and he will be held liable by the law. Notes he has tried accommodating all the settlers during the purchases but he will not suffer disorderly practices. Describes the location of Roberts' bond and warns if Roberts persists in unlawful conduct he will suffer the consequences. Docketed to John Roberts.

Asks Howe to order two men serving under him, Phineas Austin and Robert Cormach, to travel to Boston by the first of September. They, along with Thomas Austin, under Knox's command, are required to serve [as witnesses] against rascals accused of collusion. Their presence was requested by Robert Treat Paine, Attorney General of Massachusetts. See GLC02437.10129 for a related document.

Knox, Commander at West Point, writes to Lincoln, Secretary of War, apparently regarding the settlement of the Newburgh Conspiracy. Knox remarks, I most earnestly conjure you to urge, that every thing respecting the Army be decided upon before peace takes place. That events must be certain, therefore no time ought to be lost. The Army are anxiously waiting the result of General [Alexander] McDougalls mission... if they should be disbanded previous to a settlement, without knowing who to look to, for an adjustment of accounts... they will be so deeply stung by the injustice and ingratitude of their country as to become its Tygers and wolves. A note at the bottom of the page indicates that, as of 1853, Reverend R. C. Waterston (possibly Robert Cassie Waterston) of Boston possessed the original letter.

Original letter was copied by Secretary [possibly Alexander James] Dallas. This copy was done by Townsend Ward of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Marked received on 16 December 1857. Pencil note on verso mentioning a Mr. Willard.

Could not convince Wadsworth to return with him to New York, since Wadsworth is a member of the Legislature and needed to remain in town. Will come to New York within the next few days, and has asked Knox to request that Mr. Gouverneur Morris will meet with Wadsworth at that time. Is extremely anxious to make sure that the meeting happens, as all other arrangements [strikeout] are suspended in the mean time.
