Book Henry James Goes to Paris

Download or read book Henry James Goes to Paris written by Peter Brooks and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry James's reputation as The Master is so familiar that it's hard to imagine he was ever someone on whom some things really were lost. This is the story of the year--1875 to 1876--when the young novelist moved to Paris, drawn by his literary idols living at the center of the early modern movement in art. As Peter Brooks skillfully recounts, James largely failed to appreciate or even understand the new artistic developments teeming around him during his Paris sojourn. But living in England twenty years later, he would recall the aesthetic lessons of Paris, and his memories of the radical perspectives opened up by French novelists and painters would help transform James into the writer of his adventurous later fiction. A narrative that combines biography and criticism and uses James's writings to tell the story from his point of view, Henry James Goes to Paris vividly brings to life the young American artist's Paris year--and its momentous artistic and personal consequences. James's Paris story is one of enchantment and disenchantment. He initially loved Paris, he succeeded in meeting all the writers he admired (Turgenev, Flaubert, Zola, Maupassant, Goncourt, and Daudet), and he witnessed the latest development in French painting, Impressionism. But James largely found the writers disappointing, and he completely misunderstood the paintings he saw. He also seems to have fallen in and out of love in a more ordinary sense--with a young Russian aesthete, Paul Zhukovsky. Disillusioned, James soon retreated to England--for good. But James would eventually be changed forever by his memories of Paris.

Book Parisian Sketches

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parisian Sketches: Letters to the New York Tribune 1875-1876 Henry J ames's Paris letters to the New York Trib une of almost eighty years ago have been collected in this volume for the first time. Three of the letters were reprinted by James during his lifetime, the remainder were allowed to linger in the crumbling newspaper files in the hope that they would be forgotten. In recent years extracts from those letters that were devoted to the theater were included in Allan Wade's collection of J ames's dramatic criticism, The Scenic Art; and cer tain passages dealing with paintings were incorporated by John L. Sweeney in his compilation of Henry J ames's art criticisms, The Painter's Eye. The ma J or ity of the letters, however, remained uncollected, and available only to those who cared to read the files or the microfilm record. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1. This volume includes 122 letters, 67 of which are published for the first time, written between June 6, 1880, and October 20, 1881. The letters recorded Henry James's confirmation of his identity as a London resident, follow his struggles with the complexities of his professional life, and illustrate his closer attention to family and friends. His friends, such as Henry and Clover Adams, and family members, such as his brother William, view him as their resident Londoner. When his sister, Alice, and her companion, Katharine Loring, travel to Britain, James both supervises Alice's state of health and also reports on its status to their parents. The letters show James's professional life as he shifts away from writing pot-boiling reviews and short fiction toward the greater novels that continue to be associated with him, especially The Portrait of a Lady. We also see James negotiating with publishers and arranging whenever possible simultaneous publication in Britain and the United States in order to maximize his writing income. This volume concludes with James's much-anticipated return to his native America, buoyed by his completion of "The Portrait of a Lady." The journey marked a significant milestone in the author's life.

Book excerpt: Between 1868 and 1897 Henry James wrote a number of short essays and reviews of artists and art collections; these essays were published in magazines such as Atlantic Monthly and Harper's Weekly and in newspapers such as the New York Tribune. They included James's comments on Ruskin, Turner, Whistler, Sargent, and the Impressionists, among many others. Thirty of these essays were collected and first published in a modern edition in 1956, accompanied by John Sweeney's introduction, which sketches James's interest in the visual arts over a period of years, focusing on the ways in which painting and painters entered his work as subjects. Susan Griffin's new forward places James's observations in a contemporary context. Some of the novelist's judgements will seem wrong to today's readers: he was critical of the Impressionists, for example. But all of these essays bear the stamp of James's critical intelligence, and they tell us a great deal about his development as a writer during those years.
